______ Candrima never saw herself as a mother. Content to spend her days running a simple tea house, she never imagined raising a child. And yet...

______ She stared in shock at the scene before her. Trees were uprooted, her tea shop destroyed, and the ground was blackened so thoroughly she thought Flamecaller herself had walked up the path to her tea shop. But it wasn't the devastation that held her attention; instead, her eyes fixed on a single, small, shattered object laying before her. A puddle of fluid leaked from the object - it was blood, she realized with a start.

______ Gods, was that an egg?

______ The Fae fluttered over to the fractured egg, frantically picking at the fragments, peeling them away to reveal the motionless, bloodied Imperial hatchling within.

"Mama...?" a quiet voice sounded from behind. Candrima spun midair, the smile on her face quickly fading at the sight of... She thought for a moment. Was it sadness? She thought it was, yes. Sadness. Sadness on her son's face. Hurriedly setting the tea set down, she rushed to his side, caressing the side of his face with a paw.

"What is the matter, little one?" she questioned, doing her utmost to sound as caring as she felt. The little Fae found, rather quickly, that she needed to acquire a better understanding of emotion to raise this child and did her best to do so. Of course, it still needed work... She could not read the emotion on her son's face now, something else had joined and mixed in with the sadness.

He sighed, looking at the ground in deep thought for a moment before mumbling a response she could not hear. Candrima inquired with a gentle nudge, though to a young imperial the nudge of an adult Fae was likely akin to that of a fly.

"Tell me, Milagro... I... I promise whatever it is I will try to help."

Silence.

"I... I know I am not the best mother, particularly for an Imperial... But I am trying and I want to help and do better. But... I need you to talk to me, son."

Still silence.

Candrima wilted at the lack of response, opening her mouth as if to babble out something else in a feeble attempt to comfort him when the Imperial's head snapped up. She just barely managed to flap out of the path of growing horns, flitting to face her son.

"Mama... Why... Why can't I fly?" Milagro questioned, refusing to meet her gaze, his voice laden with sadness so strong his Fae mother knew precisely what emotion it was immediately. "I-it's just... All of my friends can fly, but... I can't. I can barely even move my wings and they're all torn up..."

It felt like something struck her in the heart, dragging her down until she sat, wings splayed, on the floor of her shop. Taking a shaky breath, she fluttered back into the air, a mournful smile on her face.

"Little one... Let us sit down for some tea. It is a long story."
