Fix You (Cover) - Fearless Soul
In her youth, Zarasti studied under a master of magic, specializing in healing yet also having an unnatural affinity for darker arts. Necromancy, in particular, caught her interest. Naive, she imagined the ability to bring one back to life as the greatest gift a healer could give.
That day changed it all.
A strange Skydancer came to her, hoping for hope, grasping for someone, anyone to aid her. The Skydancer told Zarasti of a friend gone long ago; one which she wished to return to life so he could experience this world and live his own dream. Zarasti agreed. She wished now that she hadn't.
The creature that arose was no dragon - it was merely a monster from the depths in the shape of one. The body seemed to melt from the heat created by dragging its soul back to the land of the living. Ravens fled in fear, the heat singing their feathers as they flew. Even Zarasti felt the burning heat eating away at her skin, but the most profound effect it had was on her pearl.
Once beautiful and white, it was now a sooty grey, charred from the heat. But she could not focus on it long.
The beast brought to life charged her, murderous intent in its burning eyes... only for a bright flash of flame to stop it in its tracks.
That day, everything changed.
Her pearl stained black, not from soot or fire but from dark magic, all who saw it knew what she had done. The pearl was a curse, a stain upon her, a reminder of that horrible day she and that Skydancer foolishly brought a spirit back. Now, it would never leave her be...
Her pearl held not only her soul; it held that of the beast and the phoenix as well. The phoenix had managed, through her own strange magic, to tie her life and death to Zarasti's pearl where, together, they worked to keep the resurrected soul tucked away. It was too powerful for either of them to face alone, but together they could seal it within the pearl.
But as phoenixes do, the phoenix would always revive. Her soul would leave the pearl and Zarasti's alone would never be strong enough to keep the dead at bay. This brutal cycle would repeat without fail - six months of the phoenix's death followed by six months of the phoenix's life.
She simply had to hide away and last long enough against the dead for the now-living phoenix to arrive. It was difficult. Zarasti hated leaving her hospital. She hated summoning Philemon just to have someone fill her spot. She should be there, not him. But because of her own foolishness, she couldn't always be.
The dead was too powerful, too dangerous, to take that risk.
"Zarasti!"
"Philemon? You're still here?"
"I am. I- Summoner, I need your help. Please."
"Go, Philemon," Zarasti said, her magic and the phoenix's wrapping around him, concealing him from the view of their enemies. "Find them. Save them, if you can."
"I'm not strong enough to save them. I know someone who is, but first I must find them," Philemon muttered, a determined look on his face. "I will find them. Zarasti... thank you."
