This is the home of my clan lore and the kinda-chronological retelling of it. It is not all-encompassing—especially in the beginning, where I will be handwaving a few details, picking up after my first hiatus rather than the start of my time on FR, and generally not touching on everything that may have happened, logically, during that time. After all, this is supposed to be fun, and this lore is something that was only just barely started back then, and finalized and fleshed out now, several years later! So if things seem like they're proceeding at a bit of a fast pace, just assume there's a reasonable amount of time between said events. In my clan lore, I mostly ascribe to the FR timing that @/Petall does in many of their Pinkerlockes: one month for us is a year for the dragons. The difference for me is instead of each year beginning with a festival, it usually ends with a festival, one final hurrah to the element as its dominance fades away for the next elemental year. This is a little less crucial to me and my lore because, even when I catch up to now, I will likely not be mentioning festivals unless something Happens. Still a fun thing to note, though! If you find that you're enjoying my lore and want to be pinged when I post more, feel free to join my pinglist! [pinglist=12261] Eventually, once I'm happy with where Wayward Winds is at, or if I ever decide to venture outside of Wind for any amount of time, I may decide to make smaller clans with their own lore, or maybe do a Pinkerlocke of my own! If I do, their pinglists will be added here and they will be added to this thread! Hence why the name is not necessarily Wayward Winds specific (even if Robin is a member of the clan...). With that being said, lets get right into it!

The Lore of the Wayward Winds Clan

The library of the Wayward Winds is a small, humble little thing. Though large enough to accommodate dragons of all sizes, it's only just large enough for an Imperial or Guardian—such larger breeds would not be comfortable navigating the space or remaining for very long. Which is perfectly serviceable for the small clan, as the library does not house any tables, nor even a front desk. Just a collection of books that one may borrow and return at their leisure, tended by a bright blue Fae fluttering about from shelf to shelf.

I’m still becoming accustomed to this heat again.” Zaia pauses halfway up the hill, turning back to her partner. Almost as fast as she ran up the hill, she slithers back down to him. He sits heavily upon the ash-covered ground, exhaling shakily at the moment’s respite. Sitting herself in front of him, Zaia runs her claws through his mane, trying to help encourage cooling airflow as she mutters quiet reassurances. “Not far now, my love. Soon we’ll be in our dark, quiet burrow you dug out for us, where the heat cannot get to you. Soon we’ll be amongst the hills where the cool breezes of the Plateau ruffle your fur. Soon, we’ll be home. Just a little further.” “I know. It is just hard to bear this heat outside of the Flamecaller’s blessing. I just need a few moments.” Closing his eyes and leaning into her paw, he continues, “Tell me of home. Remind me of the sights.” Zaia smiles warmly at him, but there is no small amount of sadness in it, either. Despite Tundra tendencies, he remembers well the names and faces of dragons—though places tend to elude him. She had hoped he would remember home, but it seems it is not to be. “We settled in a hollow underneath an outcrop, to start. You dug us a lovely den, as I said, cool and sheltered from the heat. Then more dragons came, seeking to contribute to the Flamecaller’s glory, and we built them homes, dug them nests. Some days there was a lovely breeze blowing from the Windswept Plateau, do you remember it? We would take the day off and enjoy the weather…” He closes his eyes, taking him her words, and she sighs wistfully, “It wasn’t much, admittedly, but it was home.” He opens one eye to look at her, frowning. “You speak as if it is no longer home.” She takes a deep breath as the Flamecaller’s final words to them echo in her mind. ‘Leave, then. And do not come back. You will not be afforded a second chance.’ “I fear it won’t be, for much longer… but come, let us cross the ridge and make our way down to camp and see things for ourselves.” ----- As the pair reaches the top of the hill and looks down on their clan, they are overcome by a wave of sorrow. The dragons lingering around the clan's heart are clearly weak, underfed. Fires do not burn in their forges, and there is no sense of life to the clan buildings. They approach slowly, and are almost entirely unnoticed until one dragon, doing better than the others at keeping himself together, catches sight of them and hurriedly trots over. "Zaia, Maudy! Djinn had mentioned venturing out to find you, but I didn't expect you would actually... the Flamecaller let you leave her service?" The Skydancer's expression is hidden in his hood, but his emotions are clear in his voice. The pair nods, Zaia stepping forward to speak. "We could not hear Djinn's tales of the clan and leave you to fend for yourselves. Not after all that has happened to you. We pleaded our case to the Flamecaller, and she allowed us to return. But..." Her hesitation speaks volumes, and a frown crosses the Skydancer's exposed muzzle. He pulls back his hood, exposing his antennae—though all present know full well he does not need to—and flicks them gently forward, as if looking for something in particular. Finally, he murmurs, "You are still touched by Her, but it fades quickly. The heat will be all the more unbearable after having her blessing for so long." He seems to remember himself and, after glancing to Maudy struggling in the heat, he gestures the both of them to follow. "Come, come. Let us speak in more comfortable environs. Mine and Lothair's den is just over here." Zaia helps Maudy to his feet and the pair follow the Skydancer for a moment through the clan before Zaia breaks the silence. "So, Nix. Lothair? How did that come about?" Nix's steps falter slightly, and his antennae flatten back on his head. He turns his head only slightly to respond, "Ah, well. Tensions have been running high, I'm sure you can imagine. And I found her presence more and more a comfort than a burden, as time went on. She has been..." he sighs, "my rock, in this time. I could not have taken up this mantle without her." Zaia chuckles to herself, making a mental note to speak more with him about this later, but does not push any further. Instead, once they enter Nix's home, she helps Maudy settle down before continuing to speak with her old friend. "Speaking of this mantle you have taken up..." "Leadership is yours, if you want it. I merely filled a hole left behind." "What even happened?" The Skydancer frowns at her. "The first led well, but sought her own retirement. Her successor desired wealth, at the expense of the clan's wellbeing. Time was spent only in scavenging and scouring, not hunting or foraging. If it was not treasure, he wanted none of it. When the clan grew too weak to do even that, he left us. Another stepped up, to try and fill the gap, but he had little experience and we all could tell his heart was not here. I finally gave him leave to follow it, and have been trying to keep together what few of us remain, since." The Mirror dips her head, sighing. "We should not have left." "You sought new purpose as Her Exalted." "But we abandoned you." She lifts her gaze to meet Nix's, eyes steely. "We are no better than the second, leaving to seek our own fortunes." "But you are here now," Nix replies. "You care, unlike he." He does not push further, feeling her resolve, but instead changes the subject. "And now that you are here, let us speak no more of the past and instead look to the future. What shall we do?" Zaia does not speak, at first—in fact, it is Maudy, somewhat recovered from the heat, that first answers him. "Have the flames offered you any guidance, of late?" Nix's expression becomes solemn. "I have sought answers to few questions save for where we may next find our meals, and even then the responses are hazy. I could try and seek further but there is too much noise, I fear." Zaia shakes her head, raising a paw. "No need. I already know where we shall go from here. The clan needs clean air and rich hunting grounds. Fertile lands to forage in. We much leave the Ashfall Wastes and restart this clan on the Windswept Plateau." ----- Next >> ----- And there it is! The "prologue" to my lore, which is the events immediately following my first hiatus. Namely: unexalting my progens, Zaia and Maudy, and then moving to Wind! You'll notice they look a bit... different here than on their pages, and that's because, for dragons where breed or gene changes are part of their lore, I will be including that in the lore, obviously. So, for now, Zaia and Maudy are still a Mirror and a Tundra! Though, Gaolers were introduced not long after that hiatus... I touched on it a little bit in the intro but time will be a little weird, especially while I'm catching up. Like, for example, I will be receiving a response on a hatchling letter within the next couple of weeks, mroe than likely, yet that hatchling (and his later letter) will not come into play for quite some time. It is as it is, though—lore keeps moving forward, no matter how much catchup I have to do! That's really all the thoughts I have on this chapter, I'm a bit nervous and excited all at the same time, because I've had this lore floating around in my head for so long, but I've only recently decided to share it with the wider FR world. If you're interested in joining my pinglist, you can find it on the first post of this thread!

The Skydancer's expression is hidden in his hood, but his emotions are clear in his voice. The pair nods, Zaia stepping forward to speak.

"We could not hear Djinn's tales of the clan and leave you to fend for yourselves. Not after all that has happened to you. We pleaded our case to the Flamecaller, and she allowed us to return. But..."

Her hesitation speaks volumes, and a frown crosses the Skydancer's exposed muzzle. Mine and Lothair's den is just over here."

Zaia helps Maudy to his feet and the pair follow the Skydancer for a moment through the clan before Zaia breaks the silence. "So, Nix. Lothair? How did that come about?"

Nix's steps falter slightly, and his antennae flatten back on his head. He turns his head only slightly to respond, "Ah, well. Tensions have been running high, I'm sure you can imagine. And I found her presence more and more a comfort than a burden, as time went on. She has been..." he sighs, "my rock, in this time. I could not have taken up this mantle without her."

Zaia chuckles to herself, making a mental note to speak more with him about this later, but does not push any further. Instead, once they enter Nix's home, she helps Maudy settle down before continuing to speak with her old friend. "Speaking of this mantle you have taken up..."

"Leadership is yours, if you want it. I merely filled a hole left behind."

"What even happened?"

The Skydancer frowns at her. I finally gave him leave to follow it, and have been trying to keep together what few of us remain, since."

The Mirror dips her head, sighing. "We should not have left."

"You sought new purpose as Her Exalted."

"But we abandoned you." She lifts her gaze to meet Nix's, eyes steely. "We are no better than the second, leaving to seek our own fortunes."

"But you are here now," Nix replies. "You care, unlike he." He does not push further, feeling her resolve, but instead changes the subject. "And now that you are here, let us speak no more of the past and instead look to the future. What shall we do?"

Zaia does not speak, at first—in fact, it is Maudy, somewhat recovered from the heat, that first answers him. "Have the flames offered you any guidance, of late?"

Nix's expression becomes solemn. "I have sought answers to few questions save for where we may next find our meals, and even then the responses are hazy. I could try and seek further but there is too much noise, I fear."

Zaia shakes her head, raising a paw. "No need. I already know where we shall go from here. The clan needs clean air and rich hunting grounds. Fertile lands to forage in. We much leave the Ashfall Wastes and restart this clan on the Windswept Plateau."

And there it is!
