And it will be my turn to laugh and tell them no.” He considers the horizon for a moment, recalling the ragged clan that had shown up briefly some weeks ago. If they had decided to settle, they would need a market, surely. At least a trading post, to start. “Hmm… but which way did they go…” He wracks his brain for the answer before suddenly darting off toward the Zephyr Steppes, certain that he recalls them headed that way. ----- Huddled on the edge of the cliff, Reedcleft looks down over the clan below with a mixture of longing and fear. After a few long moments of observation, she pulls back from the ledge and starts to pace, out of sight of the dragons below. “A clan? Here? There hasn’t ever been a clan here before. I should tell Elder…” But despite her words, she stops, her paws rooted to the ground, her attention still drawn to the hollow. “But… maybe they’re friendly—no. No. Mother always said to stay quiet and stay in the bamboo.” As she speaks, she takes a few steps back, into the copse of bamboo flourishing behind her. “Outsiders are dangerous. They steal your heart and break your spirit. No good ever comes from outsiders, Mother says.” And yet… her feet were heavy even as she turned and dashed away from the cliff’s edge. ----- “The clan guard?! You have to be kidding me.” Svenn paces back and forth in front of Glade, who lays calmly in the haphazard bed of grasses and cloth set aside for them. “Do you not remember how many times we’ve been chased out by guards lately,” he hisses, lowering his tone—though there’s no one else in this temporary communal space that could hear him even if he spoke at normal volume. Tilting her head and closing her eyes against the torrent of anger rolling off of him in waves, Glade sighs, “We need to make ourselves useful. Its all claws on deck right now. And they desperately need more dragons in the guard.” She smiles faintly, “Besides, when guards chase us out, it’s usually because we started it.” Svenn stops, huffing. “You’re talking as if you intend for us to stay here. Permanantly.” “I do.” Disbelief jolts through his anger, and silence settles between them. Finally, he shakes his head. “We’re not staying. We just need to wait out the storm, wait for a job.” With a sorrowful hum, Glade stands up and meets his gaze. “We have to stay, Svenn. Our time at the top has come to an end. What happened with Zoisite..." Cold claws of fear grip her chest, squeezing her heart. "We can't keep going, it'll only result in—" He huffs, turning away, “We just need the right opportunity again. We’re off our game, but we can jump right back in. All we have to do is wait for someone to give us the chance again." Glade closes her eyes and steels herself for what she's about to say, for what might come of it. "I don't want a chance, Svenn," she states firmly, drawing herself up. "I want a life. I'm out of the business. If you want to get back to hunting, you're doing it alone." He stares at her for a long moment in disbelief, desperation in his eyes as he searches her for any trace of insincerity, of humor. When he finds none, his expression hardens and he snarls, "Fine. I did just fine before you stumbled in my life, I'll be just fine without you now. I'll find a job and get back to the top on my own." Even as he turned to leave the den with a haughty lift of his head, Glade can feel the hurt radiating off of him. She only wishes he could sense that very same hurt lancing through her own chest. ----- As Arys and Nix quietly start discussing their unique skills, Lothair nudges Solaris’ shoulder and jerks her head towards the entrance of the den. The sunlit Skydancer hesitates, looking to her companion, but he does not seem to notice. After a moment, she follows Lothair. The fiery female trots a few steps ahead, tail swishing leisurely as she winds through the bamboo towards the outside of their claimed plot. “Truly a wonderful thing, their gifts. Though it comes with much weight. It’ll be good for Nix to have someone else to consult with on what he sees.” She pauses, glancing back to Solaris. “Does Arys also struggle with not wishing to burden anyone else with his glimpses of the future?” Solaris slows her pace, arching her neck warily. “He… doesn’t talk about it with me.” Lothair hums thoughtfully, then keeps walking. Her emotions are impossible to read, buried in the waves of burning magic that radiate from her flaming feathers and semi-molten form. “Perhaps he, too, will benefit from having a confidant, then.” “But he trusts me more than anyone!” Solaris protests before she can catch herself. “I’m his closest friend!” “And that’s precisely why he likely keeps you in the dark,” Lothair replies, glancing back with an understanding sorrow in her eyes. “Nix is my mate, but he shares little of what he sees with me. I suspect he thinks he’s protecting me from the future—and I suspect Arys is doing the same with you. It isn’t a matter of lacking trust or closeness. In fact, I believe it is because they can trust us to stand by them even without knowing what’s coming, and because of the depth of their love for us that they don’t burden us with the weight of knowledge.” Solaris tries to nod, but Lothair's word choice has sent her heart hammering too hard in her chest for her to properly respond. Whether sensing her emotions or simply reading her face, Lothair chuckles and adds, “I don’t know the nature of your relationship, but it is clear you are close. I would be shocked if his silence were a lack of trust.” Her steps slow, and she allows Solaris to catch up beside her before asking quietly, “If it’s not too out of line to ask: he’s blind, yes?” Solaris doesn’t speak, only closes her eyes and, after a long moment, nods once. Lothair inclines her head solemnly. “By that reaction, I assume it wasn’t always so.” When the smaller Skydancer starts to answer, she holds up a molten paw and waves the words away. “I will not ask you to share your story, not yet. While I should be glad to hear it when you’re ready, it’s more than clear you aren’t comfortable with us yet. That’s perfectly okay.” Solaris watches as the flaming Skydancer trots a few steps ahead and then, in one swift motion, settles herself onto a rock just outside the bamboo and rope fence built around their home. Wary, but ever so curious, she joins the older Skydancer and asks, “How did you know?” “Not many would. But I spent many years watching the subtle actions of a clan around me, so I’ve picked up on your gentle guidance, on the way he does not track head movement the same way seeing dragons do. He has adapted well.” Solaris nods, gesturing to her antennae, "He says he can 'see' the vague forms of dragons in their energy, which lets him identify dragons fairly easily, as well as follow me in flight, but the land doesn't have the same benefit. The way he puts it, the elemental regions, to him, are all a canvas of one color. Where we see trees and rocks, he sees only the heavy presence of Wind, or Nature, or..." she waves a paw. "Rocks are the land as much as trees are, they are not individual in the same way dragons are. So even though I am a Shadow dragon, I appear different than another Shadow dragon... I think. I'm not entirely sure, I can't quite wrap my head around his explanations." "I think I follow," Lothair responds. "Nix's sensitivity is... similar, perhaps. Energies and emotions have a different feel for each of us. I think that Skydancers like Nix and Arys are just more keen to the nuances." "I don't think Arys can sense emotions," Solaris mutters before she can stop herself. Lothair raises a brow with an almost knowing look, and the younger Skydancer looks away, stammering, "I- Well- He's just never... mentioned it, is all. It's always been the stars, and now the energy of other dragons... If he can sense emotions, he hasn't brought it up." Lothair chuckles, "Perhaps he can't, far be it from me to know." She closes her eyes for a moment, as if concentrating, then stands. "Their conversation is drawing to a close, it seems. We ought to make our way back." Stretching, she grins at Solaris and lowers her voice almost conspiratorially. "As for Arys... perhaps he can't sense emotions, or perhaps he wants to give you the space to approach him about it on your own time." With light steps, she starts back towards the den, leaving a stunned and thoroughly embarrassed Solaris behind to card through her thoughts briefly before joining her ----- <<Prev || Next>> ----- @pinglist-12261 ----- At one point I had a line referring to Lothair as "the larger Skydancer," but I'm not sure if it made it into the final bc I'm not seeing it now. But I wanted to comment on it because technically Solaris is larger in all regards. But in my head, Lothair is the bigger one by a significant amount, because of Solaris' age and hatchlinghood. Girl's a lil stunted. Anyways, a couple of small intros for less central dragons that'll be joining up later, and a couple updates for some previously-intro'd pairs! :D Might be another chapter coming later today, depending on how distracted I get. Also ignore Snow's lack of genes, I wanted to finish him before I intro'd him but he's gotta get intro'd now (need a trading post to entice travelers to spread the word to make it more reasonable for more dragons to join) and uh. NotN is very good for getting more projects to complete, not so good for finishing projects.
