In the dark days before the light of Plaguebringer’s Cauldron scoured our lands clean of the damp creeping woods and devouring grasses, we wandered. Scavengers, we were called. Marauders, War-mongers, unwanted and lost. Nowhere welcomed us until She said “Take. Take. This world shall be yours. Take my Left Hand, let it carve a place for you.” And from Her three talons rose Her servants, our deliverance: the Necromancers and their brethren.

Her touch is the scourge of destruction, Her breath the cataclysm, Her voice the judgement of doom upon the unworthy who crawl amongst the quick and the green in the sap-sickened forests.

Now the Wyrmwound expells virulent contagion. And She grants us Her hand sinister, Her left hand in guidance and in retribution.

Virulent's Mortis

"Mortis was the firstborn of his nest. He proved his ferocity when he lashed out at the one who was holding him as a hatchling - earning his father's begrudging respect. However, Mortis is not heartless and his mother's kindness was passed to him. His sister, Valentia, struggled to break out of her eggshell. Their father declared she would not survive and ordered the hatchling's demise. Mortis refused to let his sibling perish, believing she just needed some help, breaking the eggshell from the outside to let his sister out.

Their mother decreed that Valentia was now Mortis' responsibility to keep safe as he was the one who wished to give her the chance to live. Mortis is never one to turn his back on a promise and is devoted to the protection of his sister.

Mortis has great physical strength but his concern for his sister's lack of constitution is a weakness that many forces would prey on. He has fought against these forces during his time in the Trials. One can only hope he has the mental fortitude to continue resisting lest he become prey to the monsters lurking in the shade."

Now that Neveah has established herself as an Advocating councillor, a great many doors had opened up for her and her entourage. Her success was, of course, mainly due to the counsel of Lorelai. Lorelai, who had spent her entire life prior to her disastrous Trials studying council politics, who had mastered the art of subtle manipulation, who had prepared for her future life as a councillor by sharpening her mind and honing her skills so that her ambitions could finally be realized. A wraith, however, could never hold any standing within the Council, and so she'd been shunted from Necromancer to Necromancer until custody of her had been unceremoniously dumped upon Neveah's shoulders. Beautiful, wonderful Neveah, who saw her for who she truly was, who looked past her tarnished coloration and her failures and had given her a second chance.

If Lorelai could not be a part of the Great Game directly, she could at least play from the sidelines. Live vicariously through her 'mistress', as it were.

At that point, it was practically an open secret that a wraith was the brains behind the Entourage of Councillor Neveah. Lorelai moved her queen about the board with expert precision, carefully positioning her and the rest of her pieces so that Neveah stood to benefit and gain and advance in political standing. Through Lorelai's careful planning and execution, Neveah had finally made a name for herself.

Now, that wasn't to say that Neveah was incompetent when it came to politics; Neveah could play the Great Game well enough herself, but Lorelai was the true master, and thus was usually content to defer to the clever nocturne's judgments.

Usually. Not always. Even they were not immune to… disagreements, from time to time.

If these dragons are touched by Mother's Blessing in the first trial they soon find that they can overcome the plague through sheer force of will. Strain and stress may have disrupted the dragon’s sense of self, leading to harmful or irrational behavior. Such readily available power allows them to perform feats that might otherwise be impossible, but it can come at the price of their health, or even shorten their lifespan. Distrusted, shunned, persecuted, dragons that develop Dark Sclera are often doomed to a life of loneliness and forced flight. Not even Necromancers can escape that taint, although unlike their untested brethren they can rise above it. Despite intense research and magical inquiry, it is not entirely clear why a dragon develops Dark Sclera, though rumor and hearsay abound. If a Necromancer, Necroservus, or Wraith develop Dark Sclera during their Trials it is often whispered that they entered into a heretical alliance with the Shade to save themselves and succeed. A Ghoul is twice-damned, the Dark Sclera pointed to as both the reason for their failure and Mother's judgement of their betrayal. But despite the added burden of social persecution, Dark Sclera brings many gifts as well. A dragon so benighted gains the ability to gauge the Infectionist abilities of the Necromancers around them from sight alone, and to identify their signature Plague in others. It's a tempting gift to any Necromancer, so when one of long-standing suddenly develops a darkened gaze it brings with it inevitable suspicion, and 'Lich' might be whispered behind the dragon's back. When active, the spiral of the dragon's eye rotates and they are able to observe and process a preternatural level of information about the world around them. In Necromancers and their variants, the effect often manifests as the ability to perceive a body's inherent weaknesses, susceptibilities, and latent disease states before symptoms even appear. The ability is not without price, for the more often a dragon activates their sight, the faster their control over it erodes. In later stages a dragon completely loses the ability to deactivate their gaze, leaving them in a state that is out of sync with time and space. They are no longer able to perceive reality as it is, and are instead lost to the exponential possibilities of the future. Like a disease, swirl eyes are contagious and can be transferred when a dragon touches another with magic. As a result, swirl eyes are an almost insurmountable liability in Necromancers. Instead it is Necroservi that benefit most from the eye-type, often using it in service of their Necromancer, who in turn can help them maintain control. Swirl eyes in Ghouls are truly terrifying. Already unstable, Ghouls with swirl eyes quickly lose control and fall into insanity. However that does not stop unscrupulous Necromancers forcing the condition on captive Ghouls, wanting the power the ability grants without suffering its detriments. Like the monotone Fae that struggles to communicate with dragons lacking an emotive crest, the goat-eyed dragon finds it difficult to read social situations or respond to appropriate cues. Interestingly, this disconnect disappears when interacting with Beastclan, or the animals of Sornieth's wildlands. Goat-eyed dragons tend to feel most at home in lonely, wild places, or the villages of Centaur and Talonok. Others learn how to adapt their unique mindset to dragon society and make a place for themselves in the odd nooks and crannies of their communities. The primary distinction of goat-eyed Necromancers and their variants is their heavy reliance on their familiar, both to do their work and in getting by in day-to-day life. Goat-eyed Necromancers are the least likely to follow the unwritten expectation that they take a Plague familiar after their Trials, instead choosing one most attuned to their personality and needs. Developing during the Trial of Survival, Innocent eyes are the visible symptom of a special strain of Mother’s Plague that attacks the optic nerve. In affected dragons, excess tears are produced - the fluid viscous and cloudy - giving the eye a magnified appearance with a watery sheen. Left untreated, the membrane of the eye becomes inflamed and begins to deteriorate, eventually leading to blindness. This is quite different from what is known as Innocent eyes outside of the Trials, which in most cases is simply large eyes. Innocent eyes as it applies to the variants is most common in Ghouls and the disease is expressed in them to the most devasting effect. Already deadly, Innocent eyed Ghouls become devastating, their Plague literally dripping from them with their tears. Curiously, Necromancers and Servus with Innocent eyes almost universally resist or outright refuse treatment. They give a range of excuses, from ‘the tears feel right, they are a gift from Mother as much as my stripes,’ to ‘they are a symbol of Mother’s virulency, found in me just as much as in Her most dangerous Ghouls.’ All variants can recall the exact moment that they contracted the disease, as if it were tied to a sudden epiphany or revelation. Their vehemence in keeping their eyes even unto blindness has led to rumors that they're privy to secrete truths and hidden knowledge bestowed by the Mother.[/color] [/columns] [right][size=3][color=maroon][i]Innocent lore inspired by [url=https://flightrising.com/main.php?p=view&tab=userpage&id=408680]Drakessis[/url][/i][/color][/size][/right] [columns] [color=maroon][b]Bright[/b]: Dragons with Bright eyes are known for their passion and the fevered intensity with which they pursue their goals. This drive to achieve is often compared to a Guardian’s single-minded obsession to find their charge, and one stands between them and what they want at their peril. Necromancers with Bright eyes can make fearsome zealots, or pursue their duties at the expense of their mental and physical health. Bright-eyed Necroservi are prized above all other eye types, though these Servus are the most likely to abandon their Necromancer for another if they feel they lack ambition. A dragon's eyes are more than just pigment and sight; they are a symbol of the divine, an outward mark of their magical heritage and inward glimpse into their soul. And while a dragon's eyes can't tell you everything about their lives and personalities, they can hint at what is normally hidden. The following eye characteristics should be considered guidelines, not hard rules, of what you can expect based on the eyes of a Necromancer or its variants.

Uncommon eyes: Dragons with uncommon eyes tend to be open and easily influenced by the magical energies in their environment. Magic casters find that they have a wealth of power at their disposal along ley lines and in places where magical energies once clashed. Due to their openness, dragons with uncommon eyes are especially suited to the first Trial of Infection. Their bodies readily accept Mother's Blessing and within days they find themselves riddled with plague. Given this early advantage, uncommon-eyed dragons typically have more time to fight off the plague and learn to control it, though their ability to do so is no greater or less than a common-eyed dragon.

Unusual eyes: Dragons with unusual eyes have depths in magical ability that can be hard to fathom. Their powers run deep, as their bodies serve as a reservoir they can draw on even when external resources run thin. Unfortunately, their endurance can also make them reckless. Unusual-eyed dragons might overextend themselves if they're not familiar with their own limits. If these dragons are touched by Mother's Blessing in the first trial they soon find that they can overcome the plague through sheer force of will. They beat back the sickness limb from limb, organ by organ, until it lies dormant within them, ready to be called upon. While it is rare for an unusual-eyed dragon to fail the second trial, they have no guarantees in passing the third.

Rare eyes: Dragons with rare eyes are masters of transmutation. Some have command of several elements while others utilize their birth element in ingeniously clever ways, such as making fire run like water or wind carry the currents of lightning. While their strength and ability vary by individual, rare-eyed dragons are infallibly clever, sometimes too clever for their own good. With their ability to contort and transform their magic, dragons with rare eyes find the Trial of Contagion to be intuitive (if not easy) and are likely to pass, assuming they make it that far.

Faceted eyes: Dragons with faceted eyes see the world through a myriad of lenses, with each image providing one version of the truth. They see reality as complex and filled with potential, both paradoxical and inherently consistent. They are experts at quickly taking in stimuli, whether it be visual or abstract, and combining it into a single whole. As Necromancers they excel in the role of counselor or diplomat because they can synthesize diverse perspectives and use them to create a guiding path forward. If a common-eyed dragon emerges from the Trials with faceted eyes it can indicate a fracturing of the psyche. Strain and stress may have disrupted the dragon’s sense of self, leading to harmful or irrational behavior. Some of these dragons will descend into madness while others learn to rebuild their disrupted mental pathways into a type of clairvoyance, emerging as respected seers.

Multi-gaze: While faceted-eyed dragons combine versions of reality into a single whole, a multi-gaze dragon can hold several points of view simultaneously even if they are conflicting. They are hungry for experiences, facts, and knowledge, and will consume them indiscriminately, seeking to turn each new tidbit into another facet of themselves. Common-eyed dragons that manifest multi-gaze as a result of their Trials are said to have fully embraced the doctrines of evolution, adaptation, and unending consumption that represents Plague Flight. They make fanatical priests and zealous warriors, relentless and fearsome to behold.

Primal: Natural-born prodigies, dragons with primal eyes can command the raw essence of their element with staggering power. Hatchlings born with primal eyes are viewed as inherently gifted and destined for great things. In the Plaguelands these hatchlings are almost always encouraged to attempt the Trials, and some of the most powerful Necromancers and devastating Ghouls have emerged from their ranks. Necroservus with primal eyes are rare, as these dragons tend to either succeed or fail spectacularly. Primal-eyed dragons that undertake the Trials invariably emerge with the following specialties based on their birth element:

Earth-born gravitate toward plague that afflicts the bones and the structural integrity of the dragon, such as bone rot, crippling pain, wasting illnesses, and devastation of ligaments and tendons. Earth Necromancers specialize in returning strength to weakened dragons, and bolstering their inner reserves.

Fire-born are especially gifted in bestowing fever and delirium. The most powerful can cause blood to boil in the veins. Fire Necromancers are experts at burning pathogens from the body and searing away infection. Often their cures can be more painful than the original affliction.

Wind-born are masters of contagion. The creatures they touch are overcome with fits of sneezing and coughing, and inevitably infect all around them. Wind Necromancers are also capable of dispersing sickness-causing vapors, even in the Plaguelands.

Water-born have a special purview for blood-borne illnesses, which can also be passed on to offspring in the womb. They cause disorders such as hemophilia, which sentences the unfortunate to a death by a thousand cuts. Water Necromancers make some of the best healers, able to revert plagues spread by even the most powerful Ghoul.

Shadow-born are inherently gifted in diseases that dull the senses, especially those that take away sight. They can silence the mind and easily ease dragons into comas or out of them again. Shadow Necromancers are severely limited in their ability to heal, though even the least talented can offer a near-complete relief from pain.

Ice-born are capable of shutting down a dragon’s immune system, allowing infections to run riot. In addition they can hold a new virus in stasis, allowing prolonged study and time to unlock its secrets. While Ice Necromancers’ destructive powers are unparalleled, it comes at the cost of their ability to heal, which is lower than average. However, they are able to stop the progression of a disease (if not fully cure it) and lower fevers.

Lightning-born are adept at causing neurological disorders, such as convulsions, seizures, uncontrolled trembling, and loss of limb, organ, or brain function. Lightning Necromancers are some of the few that can cure madness, though this treatment can result in a personality change in the afflicted.

Light-born specialize in illnesses resembling radiation poisoning. The afflicted creature will begin to lose teeth and fur or scales, and in the long term cancers and tumors will develop in their tissues. Light Necromancers are especially good at removing fungal infections and, ironically, curing the cancer that they cause.

Unsurprisingly, nature-born specialize in plant-based diseases, though that is not the extent of their power. They can also turn a victim’s immune system against itself, resulting in severe allergic reactions and leaving them susceptible to other plagues and infections. Nature Necromancers are skilled in getting the body to draw on its natural reserves to heal itself, and in curing reproductive and genetic diseases.

Plague-born often cause the most horror in their victims, as they prefer flesh-based diseases such as rot, leprosy, weeping sores and buboes. Plague Necromancers are capable of causing mutations in dragons, which can lead to both beneficial and detrimental effects.

Natural dreamers, arcane-born are fascinated by unnatural diseases, such as those that effect the spirit, the mind, or a victim’s magical ability. Arcane Necromancers are one of the few that can restore a dragon’s magic, or cure mood disorders such as depression.

Glowing eyes: Those that burn brightest, may often burn shortest. Dragons with glowing eyes possess magical energies so intense that they manifest as a visible light that emanates from their core. Often the result of a crisis of the past, these dragons cannot hoard their magical energies. Instead it streams from them whenever they are not actively using their talents. Such readily available power allows them to perform feats that might otherwise be impossible, but it can come at the price of their health, or even shorten their lifespan. Many glowing eyed dragons profess not to mind, as if feeling they have always been living on borrowed time.

Dark Sclera: A dragon's eyes are a symbol of their elemental magic, so it is jarring indeed to see that holy color surrounded by the blackness of the Shade. Distrusted, shunned, persecuted, dragons that develop Dark Sclera are often doomed to a life of loneliness and forced flight. Not even Necromancers can escape that taint, although unlike their untested brethren they can rise above it. Despite intense research and magical inquiry, it is not entirely clear why a dragon develops Dark Sclera, though rumor and hearsay abound. If a Necromancer, Necroservus, or Wraith develop Dark Sclera during their Trials it is often whispered that they entered into a heretical alliance with the Shade to save themselves and succeed. A Ghoul is twice-damned, the Dark Sclera pointed to as both the reason for their failure and Mother's judgement of their betrayal. But despite the added burden of social persecution, Dark Sclera brings many gifts as well. A dragon so benighted gains the ability to gauge the Infectionist abilities of the Necromancers around them from sight alone, and to identify their signature Plague in others. It's a tempting gift to any Necromancer, so when one of long-standing suddenly develops a darkened gaze it brings with it inevitable suspicion, and 'Lich' might be whispered behind the dragon's back.

Dark Sclera lore developed by Yuubi

Swirl: Swirl-eyed dragons exist in two states: a dormant stationary state and an active swirling state. When active, the spiral of the dragon's eye rotates and they are able to observe and process a preternatural level of information about the world around them. In Necromancers and their variants, the effect often manifests as the ability to perceive a body's inherent weaknesses, susceptibilities, and latent disease states before symptoms even appear. The ability is not without price, for the more often a dragon activates their sight, the faster their control over it erodes. In later stages a dragon completely loses the ability to deactivate their gaze, leaving them in a state that is out of sync with time and space. They are no longer able to perceive reality as it is, and are instead lost to the exponential possibilities of the future. Like a disease, swirl eyes are contagious and can be transferred when a dragon touches another with magic. As a result, swirl eyes are an almost insurmountable liability in Necromancers. Instead it is Necroservi that benefit most from the eye-type, often using it in service of their Necromancer, who in turn can help them maintain control. Swirl eyes in Ghouls are truly terrifying. Already unstable, Ghouls with swirl eyes quickly lose control and fall into insanity. However that does not stop unscrupulous Necromancers forcing the condition on captive Ghouls, wanting the power the ability grants without suffering its detriments.

Goat: Goat eyes are a physical manifestation of an unusual neurology, one that can separate the goat-eyed individual from the dragons around them and leave them a stranger in their own clan. Like the monotone Fae that struggles to communicate with dragons lacking an emotive crest, the goat-eyed dragon finds it difficult to read social situations or respond to appropriate cues. Interestingly, this disconnect disappears when interacting with Beastclan, or the animals of Sornieth's wildlands. Goat-eyed dragons tend to feel most at home in lonely, wild places, or the villages of Centaur and Talonok. Others learn how to adapt their unique mindset to dragon society and make a place for themselves in the odd nooks and crannies of their communities. The primary distinction of goat-eyed Necromancers and their variants is their heavy reliance on their familiar, both to do their work and in getting by in day-to-day life. Goat-eyed Necromancers are the least likely to follow the unwritten expectation that they take a Plague familiar after their Trials, instead choosing one most attuned to their personality and needs. Much can be inferred about a goat-eyed Necromancer simply by knowing their familiar.

Innocent: For Innocent eyed individuals some symptoms of the second Trial linger past the 23rd day. Developing during the Trial of Survival, Innocent eyes are the visible symptom of a special strain of Mother’s Plague that attacks the optic nerve. In affected dragons, excess tears are produced - the fluid viscous and cloudy - giving the eye a magnified appearance with a watery sheen. Left untreated, the membrane of the eye becomes inflamed and begins to deteriorate, eventually leading to blindness. This is quite different from what is known as Innocent eyes outside of the Trials, which in most cases is simply large eyes. Innocent eyes as it applies to the variants is most common in Ghouls and the disease is expressed in them to the most devasting effect. Already deadly, Innocent eyed Ghouls become devastating, their Plague literally dripping from them with their tears. Curiously, Necromancers and Servus with Innocent eyes almost universally resist or outright refuse treatment. They give a range of excuses, from ‘the tears feel right, they are a gift from Mother as much as my stripes,’ to ‘they are a symbol of Mother’s virulency, found in me just as much as in Her most dangerous Ghouls.’ All variants can recall the exact moment that they contracted the disease, as if it were tied to a sudden epiphany or revelation. Their vehemence in keeping their eyes even unto blindness has led to rumors that they're privy to secrete truths and hidden knowledge bestowed by the Mother.

Innocent lore inspired by Drakessis

Bright: Dragons with Bright eyes are known for their passion and the fevered intensity with which they pursue their goals. This drive to achieve is often compared to a Guardian’s single-minded obsession to find their charge, and one stands between them and what they want at their peril. Necromancers with Bright eyes can make fearsome zealots, or pursue their duties at the expense of their mental and physical health. Bright-eyed Necroservi are prized above all other eye types, though these Servus are the most likely to abandon their Necromancer for another if they feel they lack ambition. Ghouls with Bright eyes are known to retain their sanity even when their plague is at its most virulent, using their goal-driven focus to keep the madness at bay.

Serving triple roles as advisors, infectionists, and priests, [i]Necromancers[/i] are regarded as aspects of the Plaguebringer's Will personified. To have one serve a clan is recognized as a great honor and a sign of Her favor. Those outside the Plaguelands can be confused by the title, as Plaguebringer's enmity toward zombies and those that create them is well known. However, Mother's first servants do not take their name from its contemporary usage, but instead choose to reclaim the word's original root, as found in necrosis, to describe the mastery and manipulation of flesh-killing disease.

Prestige is gained by choosing a perch closer to the Wyrmwound, but this also increases the risk of failure. If they are successful the plague is suppressed and goes dormant, appearing on their skin as a series of slashing stripes across the spine and the edges of their wings.

By the dawn of the twenty-fourth day the dragon must prove its dominion of the plague by both passing it on to another being through touch and calling it back again. Breed Standards
The [i]Necromancers[/I] [size=1]and variants[/size] are recognized by the stripes of plague that stitch their spines and wing membranes. In [i]Necromancers[/I] the plague is dormant. As a result, the signifier between the variants is the color of the primary gene, running from greenish beige in [i]Necromancers[/I] to the most virulent blood-red in Ghouls.
