Not so very long ago, there were rumors of a secret research facility somewhere in the Starwood Strand. They were never substantiated and most came to believe it was just another strange accounting of the woods from an easily excitable traveler. Those who know for a fact that the facility existed would never speak of it; either out of shame for having participated or because the ghosts of what they endured in that terrible place still haunt them.
The power behind these studies remains unknown as no real names were used, even by the staff. Whatever their grim intentions were remains unclear, even to the voluntary subjects of their “research”. There is one irrefutable fact; it had something to do with Mother’s Chosen and the Trials they underwent to obtain their powers. The dragons who emerged were changed, their power of the contagion enhanced or impaired, but undeniably, irrevocably altered. Many of these survivors lost their minds and even more died, alone and forgotten, in that dreadful place.
What is it about the Chosen that draws the Mother’s eye? Why did they become Necromancers? Is it something innate, a quality that some dragons lack, or is it merely divine decree that decides who is and is not worthy? Recovered notes suggest these were only some of the questions researchers hoped to answer. Though to what end remains a mystery.

Upon entering the facility, all dragons were stripped of their names and possessions. They were instead given a designation consisting of a letter and a number. The letter denotes which study they were sorted into and the number is based on when they joined. For example: Subject A23 was part of the first batch of experimentations and was the 23rd candidate in A-class. Most of the A-class subjects met painful ends, while the few who survived became the very first Furies.

There is the before and the after. While some survivors may cling fervently to what they had in the past, others may discard it, and instead embrace what they have become. Expanded Symbol Lore

For various reasons these variants of Necromancers were not deemed eligible for experimentation. As such, only Necromancers and Necroservi were utilized in Project 88.

Subject E11 continues to demonstrate heightened perceptions and increased intellect in what will henceforth be referred to as the dominant head. Like many subjects before, she has begun to also exhibit violent mania in the subordinate head. As such she has been moved to a private holding cell and more thoroughly restrained during treatments. Thankfully, the dominant personality remains in control and has not given over to the madness as we have seen happen in earlier test subjects. My current hypothesis is that being an Aberration has allowed E11 to overcome the insanity that has befallen the other subjects. Further analysis is required to prove this theory.

Necromancers and Necroservi who had their abilities and magic “tested” emerged from these “studies” as different dragons. Their scales changed, taking on different hues and sometimes losing their markings altogether. Some even took on a similar appearance to those of a Ghoul’s. Worst of all was the effects on their mental state. While most lost their minds entirely, others seemed to gain a deeper clarity. In the case of Aberrations, they seemed capable of splitting their mind, allowing one personality to devolve and the other to sharpen.

Regardless of their disposition prior to their arrival at the facility, those who become Furies experience a heightened sense of rage and irritability. Injustices that before might have been dismissed become glaring atrocities they are now compelled to avenge. That said, they are the most functional and powerful specimens from Project 88, retaining all of their previous abilities despite the change to their appearance that makes them appear more ghoulish. Once Necromancers, these miserable creatures are the byproduct of experimentation gone wrong. Instead of making them stronger, driving them insane, or outright killing the subjects, the treatments eroded their control of the plague. Now they are little better than Virulent Ghouls, except they do not have the luxury of appearing as such. Their colors have lightened, forever marking them as other.
Only a few have been observed beyond the facility and many accounts are disregarded as rumors. However, enough wild tales have circulated to earn these former Necromancers a harrowing reputation as proclaimers of death. In truth, they have mutated the ability to infect with their keening voices alone, passing highly toxic spores into the air and onto surfaces, even into water. Many use this power to hasten the passing of ailing dragons, for their contagion is so virile it can claim a weakened dragon in the span of a few minutes. Others wander, mourning all they have lost and carelessly spreading blight wherever they go.
Neutralized Algea are incredibly rare, but do exist. They still prefer solitude and are drawn to death. As such, they are considered ill omens, even among Necromancers.
