“I think she’s dead. She isn’t breathing, look!” A voice whispered nearby. Small, soft…hatchling most likely. Two if my nose isn’t deceiving me. “Go poke her and see if she’s dead.”
“I’m not poking her! She’s scary with all those scars and…and I swear I saw her with those other big scary dragons that go out and fight other things. I mean, look at those claws!” A second says. “You go poke her!”
“You’re such a coward! Fine! I’ll go poke her.” The first hissed. The scrape of awkward feet too big for small bodies would have woken me up, even if I had been asleep. Maybe not if I was dead like they believed but…
“You don’t really have to poke her. Come on, let’s get out of here!” The second whispered loudly.
“Psh, what are you? Fresh out of an egg? I’m going to poke her, and then I’ll be the bravest one here.” The first scoffed and resumed moving closer. Bravery is one thing, foolishness however…there is a lesson I’m more than happy to teach. Foolishness often ends in death out here, and if they want to survive, they must learn eventually.
They move, and I wait. And I strike. A nocturne now pinned, and an imperial with similar markings hiding farther back.
“Ahh! I’m sorry! You weren’t breathing! We thought you were dead!” The Imperial exclaims, hiding her face under her hands. “Please don’t eat my sister!”
“Perhaps I was dead, and you’re both loud enough to wake me.” Not entirely a lie. I was dead. For a good few minutes in fact. Just not right now.
“Please don’t eat my brains!” I can’t help but laugh at the trapped hatchling.
“Have you eaten brains before? Even if I were hungry, that’s the last thing I’d want to eat.” I finally let her go. She’s quick at least. Hopefully, she keeps that speed as she gets bigger. She’ll probably live longer that way.
“Run!” One of them shrieks, though their awkward wings and feet just have them tripping over each other.
“Hey!” I probably don’t need to be so loud, but at least it gets them to freeze. “Next time, find a long stick or something. Getting into striking range of anything that might be hostile will get you killed. Walking up to something and poking it with your own claws isn’t brave. It’s how you wind up as someone’s lunch.”
Was in necessary for me to snap my jaws at them? No. Not at all. Was it worth it?
…Absolutely.

Talon was trained. From her first days, she was trained, to the last she was trained. She knows: she was always meant to serve.
She does not speak. She has no need to speak. Silence, she knows, can speak well enough. She flicks her fans, she flicks her fingers, she casts plague out with power. Her voice is her magic and her self and her service.
She serves.
She served: her first master, the one who trained her for the Trials. She served: their Lady of Plague, and almost failed utterly. She served: her second master, who taught her what she was.
A Necroservus, imperfect, but perfect in plague. She is not all she could be, but in what she is she serves and Talon has always been that. Not the mind that directs, but the claw that serves. She is wielded by her masters and like all tools, she needs no choice.
She serves, and is happy to serve.
"Who are you?"
The Imperial is tall, looming with eyes of fire. Talon tilts her head, flicks her fans, flicks her fingers, flicks her magic. Plague scatters against plague-marked hide.
She tilts her head another way. Dips her head, closes her eyes. It is a universal sign.
I serve.
"Servus." The dragon hums, a breath of spore and ash exhaled over her, nestling in the scattered threads of her wings. "Whom do you serve?"
She flicks her fans twice, twists the tatters of her wings. She casts her plague out in an arc, lifts a hand to the symbol branded at her brow.
Our Lady of Plague.
The Imperial laughs.
"Have you a name, little servling?"
She looks at him. He is tall and he is strong and he does not flinch from plague. He burns with fever-fire, and she can see madness in his eyes and poison in his skin, toxins through his bones that should eat him alive and only do not for his power, greater than hers.
She was bred and born and brought up to serve.
"Talon, my King. I am my master's Talon."
The Imperial's claw is gentle against her face, the plague he presses to her is stronger than any she has ever known and it sends her reeling with the power of it. It settles in her bones like a coiling serpent, binding and strong and strengthening.
"My Queen," he says, and his voice rumbles through her this close, sends the plague in her bones humming and happy. "I am ConTam."

A rebellious girl, paying for her defiance with her life, even if that day wouldn't come for months, even years. That's how her parents saw it when they finally found their sweet girl in the depths of the Shattered Plains, her energy sapped and complexion changed. If it weren't for those brilliant green eyes showing recognition, they may have ignored her, continued looking for the small coatl, with her golden wasp coat and brilliant seafoam runes.
It hurt the Coatl and the Imperial to see what their own deity did to their daughter. All of her was a blood red, her skin angry with sores and her wings pulsing with vein-like patterns while the marks of the Plaguebringer bore into her back and parts of her wings. They knew what these marks and what these colors meant in their current context, even if the truth hurt the two of them.
She had gone through with the trials, and worse yet she had failed. Her potent disease ran through her veins, and all the pair could do was look down at their daughter, a look of fear and disgust on both of their faces. Fear for her future, and disgust for what their deity had allowed to happen. How ironic the name "Hemlock" had become, once named after it for its beauty, now taking on the infamous toxicity of the plant.
She drew closer, and out of reflex the two of them backed away. They knew what the young coatl was capable of, even if she didn't quite realize it in her delirious state. The two had always been taught to stay away from dragons like her, which only hurt them more. So many infertile eggs, so much trying and she was they had to show for their years of effort. Unless one of the Necromancers of Sornieth dared tried to neutralize her disease, her fate had been sealed.
They weren't sure about how long their daughter had left, for all they knew by tomorrow her disease would take her. The two looked at each other, their eyes saying all that needed to be said; they could overcome her disease, they were strong enough.
They sealed their fates by allowing the young girl to show her affection in the form of physical touch, letting her cry into feathers and manes. Her touch followed them all the way until nightfall, where dads curled up body was used as a spot to sleep by his daughter and his mate.
A sleep all but one would not wake from, a disease far more cruel than anticipated taking them.

The egg pulsated as the baby inside struggled to break free. The first test of survival for any Plagueborn was surviving the hatching ordeal. Zaire knew that this one would not fail, she needed it not to fail; why else would she have chosen an egg from a nest of powerful Necromancers?
The egg cracked open. The mirror inside took its first breaths. For a moment, Zaire had mercy in her heart. The gift of life was a beautiful thing, to the Plague, even a commodity. Knowing where the egg had come from, she almost had a desire to raise it herself and allow it to attempt the Trials, to succeed where she had failed.
Almost.
Sores opened across the hatchling's body. Buboes swelled and burst. Tissue began to necrose. Terrified, it scrambled about the small cavern, looking for a way to escape. Blood dripped from each wound, severe burning rash took over where rot did not. The coughing spell was nearly overkill. It collapsed, finally too weak and painful to move any more. Fear in its eyes, the hatchling took its last breath just two minutes after its first.
Zaire looked on, stoic and expressionless as always. One lip curled up into a slight smirk.
Nothing brought her quite the joy that killing a future Necromancer did.

You have been pinged for this announcement only, from now on only the participants will be pinged. If you would like to receive further updates, please let me know and you will be added to a temporary pinglist.
Welcome to the Derg for Art contest! In this event you can win dragons by posting art of them. All dragons belong to the Necromancer subspecies, you can read about them here.
Rules:
- Please submit your entries to @/RoaringSpector, who will then post them in this thread for everyone to read. This way the entries will be judged anonymously. Credits will be added after the winner is chosen.
- Anyone can enter! Whether you already have a Necro subspecies dragon or not, you are more than welcome to participate.
- In this edition the entries should be art – it can be digital or traditional art of any form (in which case you should submit a photo). Sky is the limit!
- If needed, you can add some short written explanation to your entry for context. It will not be judged.
- You can submit multiple entries (one per dragon).
- If the dragon has any apparel, skins or a familiar, the winner will receive them along with the dragon.
- Please do not attack or harass other people. Doing so will make you automatically disqualified.
- The contest will conclude on September 6th, subject to change.
- From this point on only the participants will be pinged. If you would like to receive further updates as well, please let me know, and you will be added to a pinglist.
- If you have any questions, feel free to ask or send me or @/EssayOfThoughts a message.
- Last but not least - have fun! :D

Day XX of year XXXX
Settled into this new lair. A bit dark and damp in some places, but nobody seems to want me dead. Yet. I intend to keep it that way too. Nobody seems as spiteful or out to do something just because they can.
[s]Except Nera. What a megalomaniac.[/s]
The lead Necromancer assigned me to a Wildclaw Necromancer named Arrhizus. Unusual fellow. Gave up his Necroservus in favor of me as I'm 'more subtle than a Ridgeback'. That and something about a newer Necromancer needing the assistant more.
A note is scribbled along the margin: There seem to be more Necromancers and former Ghouls than Necroservi. Some of the Necroservi are shared.
I have no real ties to anyone here. I was neutralized by another in a different lair, so the ingrained loyalty my fellow former ghouls have is lost. Arrhizus seems utterly delighted by this. Right now he just has me delivering items and notes around to others, but as long as I prove competent, I'll get more interesting work.
[s]Perhaps if he proves to be less of a fool than my last necromancer, I will share my research with him.[/s]
