[color=darkred]For an unknown age we have studied the stars, learning of their mysteries. Our return was not foretold or grandly planned, but we have returned none the less. We have returned and seek knowledge of how the stars affect plagues. How the cosmos can corrupt, bless, and enhance one's own abilities. What greater mysteries can we research and experiment with?

The crashing of the Astrolab brought the long gone Aethers back to the surface of Sornieth and with them came their endless curiosity, desire to experiment and learn, and most of all their connection to the outer reaches of the planet's atmosphere. It didn't take long for Aethers to seemingly find themselves in all corners of the world. They were disappointed to find that even in the furthest reaches there were few new things to learn or study. That's when they found the Forbidden Portal.
The discovery of the Forbidden Portal led to a swarm of Aether crews rushing to study the portal and the world beyond it. Curiosity was their downfall. The harsh conditions of the world beyond and around the Portal itself proved quite the challenge. Many crews would become lost at best or perish at worst. A solution needed to be found, and fast. It was then that whispers of The Plaguebringer's chosen and the blessed adaptations they wield found their way among the most persistent that dared study the Forbidden Portal. These whispers would prove to be the solution the Aether crews were hoping for, and so they turned away from The Arcanist to follow Her instead. These crews would turn to the Necromantic Trials to gain the adaptive power needed to further their studies.
Many of Mother's most loyal Necromancers found the influx of the Aethers to the Trials perplexing, as most tended to perch high on the bone-like spires of the Wyrmwound, a very unlikely place for infection. As many Necromancers predicted, most Aethers that perched there failed the First Trial, failing to even become infected by the Plaguemother's touch. Those that were became more than any Necromancer could have predicted. Some of those that sat high on those spires were Blessed by The Plaguemother and became known as her Vassals.
Aethers form confusingly structured groups they call Crews and Necromantic Aethers are no different. A Necromancer crew tends to have no less than 3 Necromancers and at least a half dozen Necroservi and Wraiths. Ghouls tend to fill out the ranks. These crews tend to spend most of their time researching various connections between the stars above and the plagues they wield and master. The stars hold great mysteries as well as the Plagues of the Necromancers. Who knows how far they can push the boundaries.
When Aethers take the Trials, they tend to form small groups, often cited as 'Studies' by other breeds. These Studies form due to the highly cooperative nature of Aether dragons and serve as the first step in a new Necromantic Crew forming. The advantage of these small groups is its ability to allow Aethers to pool their resources and strength in combating the Trials. While each individual must pass their own separate challenges the group as a whole tends to have a higher-than-average survival rate. Due to this higher survival rate, Wraiths are not uncommon among the ranks of Necromancer Aethers.

Perching high above the Wyrmwound has its own challenges. The chances of infection are much lower and thus the chance of failure much higher. Those Aethers that become infected have a chance that their infection will mutate into a special variation, and grant them extraordinary abilities.
Vassals have the ability to communicate with each other over certain distances, allowing the scattered research crews to trade data and conduct experiments across many areas at once. This ability is invaluable to any Aether crew. There are little downsides to Vassals, though many of them don't have a lot of skill in the standard practices of Necromancers and their kin. They do, however, also have the ability to more perfectly link the strengths and minds of the crew in helping them more efficiently pursue their research experiments.
Vassals come in two variants, Long-range and Short-range communications, marked by the lines either running across their bodies or around them. Long-range Vassals each have a unique symbol they can share to others to establish the connections needed to facilitate communication between crews. Short-range Vassals create symbols placed on members of the crew which allow them to communicate and coordinate the crew's activities within their territory. The Symbols created by Vassals carry a small amount of the Vassal's unique strain of plague and cannot be falsified or recreated by any other Vassal.
