Cinnabar’s earliest memory was a dream of swimming in a sea of calming light, with a voice whispering to him that this was where they belonged. They dreamed about the welcoming light every night, and were always disappointed when their caretakers woke them up the next morning. Both of Cinnabar’s parents, the famous diplomat Illyan and his bodyguard Moxy, were often busy, but they often visited and trained their youngest child personally.

Cinnabar’s training consisted of Illyan teaching them how to harness their Archangel strength and speed, and Moxy teaching them how to wield various weapons. Cinnabar’s favorite weapon ended up being the cleaver, and their mother ended up giving them her old training cleaver as a gift. Cinnabar’s Avariel abilities had yet to manifest, though their parents agreed it was only a matter of time.

The trainer neither of their parents saw, however, was the persistent voice in his head. It told him that if he wanted to reach the place in his dreams, he needed to become more aggressive in his training. Cinnabar agreed, feeling a new power surging through their veins as they did so. All of their other abilities heightened, and Cinnabar excelled through the remainder of their training, surprising both of their parents.

More surprising however, was the shift in personality. While usually able to manage their temper, and let go of grudges, Cinnabar stopped doing both of these after agreeing to the voice’s requests. Every act of kindness was seen as weakness, and every act of hostility was praised. Eventually, word reached Illyan and Moxy that something had happened to their child.

When confronted by their parents about their recent actions, Cinnabar started to argue that they were just following orders, and that the voice had promised them a wonderful place to go. Concerned, Moxy tried to use her healing abilities on Cinnabar, but as soon as the voice started fading, Cinnabar panicked and fled. When the voice returned, it claimed that their parents wanted to hurt them, and the voice would take care of them instead.

Cinnabar’s powers corrupted, and now all of their abilities focused on spreading the light’s influence and corruption. Due to their new aggressiveness, they tried to use this power on anyone they came across. After a few days, however, a mysterious Pearlcatcher with a blindfold and katana showed up. The stranger claimed they were one of Waterdeep’s Masked Lords, and Cinnabar was now exiled for endangering Waterdeep’s civilians.

Though officially banished, Cinnabar lurks just outside of Waterdeep’s borders, plotting their revenge against the mysterious figure who banished them. Anyone who comes too close to them ends up injured or infected by the light, leading their presence to have a legend-like aura about them, almost like a tall tale to keep hatchlings from misbehaving or exploring too far. But every legend carries a hint of truth behind it.
