Role in Waterdeep: Masked Lord
|
Being the grandchild of two powerful otherworldly lineages gave Illyan large claw steps to fill, even as a hatching. Both of his parents were busy and were often distant, but his trainers kept his time occupied with learning how to wield both his Avariel and Archangel powers. His Archangel gifts of unnatural speed and agility lent themselves well to learning how to wield Avariel weapons, though his diplomacy and speechcraft skills shone the most. However, no matter what he seemed to achieve, he never could quite get his parents’ attention or praise. This caused him to aim higher and higher, eventually deciding that he wanted to pursue the title of Masked Lord. With this power, he could build a city where everyone, no matter what, could be welcomed and wanted. He set about practicing even harder, and began to make crucial connections with other powerful figures in Waterdeep. Despite all of his training efforts, he could never quite master sword fighting. Because of this, he started to doubt his own potential and power, and considered looking for a normal lifestyle instead. That was until a Wildclaw named Moxy took him under her wing. Her ancestors also had a powerful magic in their veins, and used it to fight against a parasitic entity called the light. She had left her home clan to help heal Waterdeep and root out any corruption from the light. Her drive and determination helped Illyan finally get the hang of sword fighting. After completing his training, Illyan underwent the trials to become a Masked Lord, excelling through all of them. In the end, however, he returned with a blindfold covering his eyes. He claimed this is because he witnessed something during the trials that he couldn't share with anyone, but Moxy suspected this wasn’t the full truth. After his secret crowning, Moxy gifted him a set of Petal Jewels, crafted by a skilled artisan named Aureole, as a sign of his new wealth and influence, but also her love for him. She also accompanied him to the Tower at the End of the World, where a blacksmith named Flux crafted him a unique blade, a katana as black as the void, but with the ability to disguise itself as an ordinary cane. Moxy was gifted a cleaver, to represent her unyielding strength and determination in combat and against the light. Desiring to spend more time with Moxy, he hired her as a personal bodyguard, though they both knew that was merely a formality. She was one of the few who knew his true identity; to others, Illyan is merely a confident skilled diplomat helping connect Waterdeep to the outside world. Illyan only wears his blindfold and katana when acting as a Masked Lord, as they change his appearance slightly to protect his identity. He formed new connections, including one with Vida, a member of the Blackstaff Tower and his half-sibling. His position allowed Moxy to look for those controlled by the light, and help heal them before anything bad happens. Deep down however, Illyan carries his darkest secret: he fears he’ll never live up to his true potential and make his parents proud. He tries his best to prevent this outcome, though sometimes his best isn’t enough. After some time being together, Illyan and Moxy were parents of a clutch of two eggs. Their older child, Corundum, quickly found a home in a faraway clan, and their younger child Cinnabar, was raised in Waterdeep. Cinnabar showed a natural aptitude for combat skills, favoring the cleaver as a weapon, the same as Moxy. What started as a blossoming skill set, started to grow into something far sinister. Both parents started to receive reports of Cinnabar being uncharacteristically aggressive, and fighting anyone they could. When confronted by their parents, Cinnabar argued with them, and Moxy realized the light had claimed their child. She tried and failed to heal them, and Cinnabar ran away, taking their training weapon with them. Both parents were greatly distraught, as Moxy had failed in her quest to heal those hurt by the light, and Illyan had failed to protect his city and care for his child. When Illyan started to hear reports of Cinnabar attacking innocent civilians with their new infected powers, Illyan donned his blindfold and katana and went with a heavy heart to exile his own child, in an effort to protect everyone else in Waterdeep. After that day, Illyan and Moxy both redoubled their efforts to protect Waterdeep in more ways than one. Moxy trained more students and Illyan formed more political connections, and after many years, Illyan and Moxy agreed to have another clutch of eggs, determined not to let the same thing happen again.
