“People don’t like talking about themselves… No, that’s not right. They do, but they only say the untrue, the exaggerated, the minced and filtered to incite a certain impression on the other party.”

“Then you must be wondering why I told you to let them write their own biographies? It’s simple, because so many things can be inferred from the way they spin their words. Fabricated or not, what I want is not the kind of information readily available to me through observation and common sense. I want to take a glimpse into their psyche when they are asked to be as transparent as possible. I want to see their reaction when you showed them this archive.”

“Besides, I cannot fully trust that you are able to write about them truthfully. This is not me berating you, I am merely stating a fact: that you are not omniscient, that you are easily swayed by your emotions, and that dragons are tricky, deceitful creatures. Still, I believe that you’ve grasped the most basic, observable facts about them, and that is why I’ll let you write the history section. Feel free to ask around, or consult one of the many documents I’ve carefully stored away within our archives, but please approach only those on the list. The council knows who is and who is not important, and it would be unfair to ask you to write about all two hundred and eight hundred dragons within Huyền Nghi. I don’t wish to make it difficult, or ask any more of you than I know you’re capable of.”

“Now… where should I start? My name is Dịch Thiên, only child of the Heaven Sect Leader. People say that I am Huyền Nghi’s beacon of hope. The few times they get close to me, though, they’re only interested in my hand-written encyclopedias that I’ve spent a tremendous amount of time on. More than I am proud of. I always make it clear that these books can only be read by Society members, and their access has to be authorized by me. If not… let’s just say that all attempts to steal the books have ended in carnage, even though Tịch Liêm Mansion^[1] never hires guards.”

“My one and only wish is to bring Huyền Nghi together, to unite all Eight Sects against outside threats. It seems to me this is such a grandiose wish that it garners a considerable amount of protest.”

H I S T O R Y

It is said that on the very night Dịch Thiên was born, the rain was torrential, the skies shook with thunder, and all corners of the earth seemed about to tip over, perhaps signifying the arrival of someone exceptional. Ever since he was a young boy, Dịch Thiên has always been invested in dragon powers. Acknowledging his son’s instinctive drive, sư phụ did not push the young lord to follow in his footsteps either. That being said, in order to retain his clan’s reputation, sư phụ had decided to appoint him the position of Local Defense Governor and let him take over Tịch Liêm Mansion.

During his childhood, Dịch Thiên lived with his father in the Grand City. Growing up alongside him was Địa Hòa, a dear childhood friend, and a few other kids. The pair even got engaged at one point under the approval of the Heaven-Earth families, but after an incident that cost Dịch Thiên two of his fingers, they broke off. Since then he has not been seen cozying up to anyone, and even his parents never say anything about marriage.

At the age of 25, Dịch Thiên founded the Council and encouraged the top disciples of other Sects to join. The point was to unify the Eight Sects and agree on the best approach to help the founders run this Society. He even nominated himself as the Delegate of Celestial Hall, a decision that no one truly opposed.

The encyclopedias he wrote within five years can be considered his greatest achievement. Wrapped in those three volumes is almost everything the Masters can teach him about the nature, history, and mission of our community. Parts of them are used in the very first introductory lessons given to newly accepted hatchlings, but it is said that there are secrets hidden within each carefully crafted prose. As insiders, the Society’s members should be able to gain access to this knowledge, but several alarming incidents have consequently turned Dịch Thiên around and ensured that only trustworthy, unproblematic dragons can touch the rough, leathery pages of these books.

Nowadays most of his time is spent training and doing paperwork, though he enjoys a cup of tea and going on walks once in a while.
