BIOGRAPHY

Jade Lotus Monastery lies deep within the woods lining the Reedclef Ascent, surrounding itself with an aura of solemnity. Hooded shadows of silent monks walk around in silence just behind the front gate, among languishing will o’ the wisps and ominous chanting. This part of the plateau is perpetually engulfed in mist, resisting even the restless, dancing winds; echoing from the distance is the weeping of birds and howling of gibbons. Such a contrast to the carefree spirits all around the cliffs. It’s hard to tell if the residents here can even enjoy the thrills of adventures that Wind dragons love so dearly.

The visitor arrives from a land faraway, only to be greeted by the collapsed jacaranda tree at the front of the monastery, its trunk lined with fungi, a musty smell filling the air. This jacaranda tree was once the star of the monastery - every spring it would be decorated with red envelopes holding fortunes inside for guests to freely pick. With the absence of the tree, few dragons even come by anymore. The visitor then meets a monk, who tells them that the monastery has changed owners. It used to be protected by the Pillar Sangha and was overseen by the head abbot, but then a scandal caused a nun to be banished, followed suit by the abbot himself. The visitor then asks what exactly happened, and the monk invites them to sit down, have a cup of tea, and let him retell the story under the waning moon. He says that his mentor was once the head abbot’s student, and studying with him was a bhikkhuni nun called Akimcanya.

Brought to the monastery as a hatchling, the nun didn’t have a real name and instead used the name given to her when she was ordained per custom as her own. She was intelligent, keen on studying more than the sutra and scriptures of the monastery, and was also good at martial arts. She was the abbot’s favorite student, and he would often allow her into his private chamber to study or invite her to drink tea with him in the garden’s gazebos. Respected by some, envied by others, the rumours that she would eventually become the head of the monastery weren’t too unreasonable.

Jade Lotus was a quiet monastery, yet it still caught the attention of scheming scoundrels. One day, a dragon from a powerful merchant clan stopped by and offered to buy the monastery for heaps of treasure. The head abbot declined politely, not wanting to cause a commotion with this dragon’s clan, but not giving in to him either. The merchant knew that Jade Lotus was one of the most powerful religious institutes in the Reedcleft Ascent, and seizing it meant obtaining an immense amount of power over the Sangha, so he kept persuading, only to be dismissed by the abbot.

The following spring, the monastery accepted a new wave of ordainees, among them was a nun who would eventually become close to Akimcanya. They trained together for a few months when rumours started going around that Tịch Không and the abbot were in a forbidden relationship. As Tịch Không was widely known for frequently visiting the abbot’s living space, words quickly spread, but it wasn’t until Tịch Không was spotted leaving the abbot's room in disheveled robes did everything erupt.

Overnight, every single member of the monastery knew of the scandal. They said that the two had been meeting each other in secret, transgressing the most essential rule of monasticism. The new nun defended them at first, but her words seemed to be hinting at the abbot tricking his student into doing unspeakable things with him. This theory went from being ignored to exploding in popularity when a student found traces of sedatives in the abbot’s teapot. All the blame was pouring down on the abbot. The nun quickly left the monastery, leaving behind a tearful letter accusing the abbot of making advances on her.

Shouldn’t it have been obvious to them that the nun was working with that rich dragon to set the abbot up?” The visitor asks.

The monk sighed. “Many people knew that. But once the rumours started spreading outside of the institute, only drastic actions from those directly involved could calm them down.

Akimcanya admitted that she was the one who would come to the abbot’s room even though he told her not to, that she was the one approaching the nun and threatening her, and that she was also the one who spiked the teapot meant for her mentor. She was banished immediately, stripped of everything related to her beliefs, and dismissed with only the abbot seeing her off. As for the abbot, he continued to run the monastery for five more moons before resigning. As his final words to his students, he said that neither of them did anything they had been accused of. He deeply regretted letting Akimcanya take the blame for him. At the time, both of them knew there were adversaries inside and outside the monastery wanting to take over him, and his popularity in the Sangha was dwindling. Akimcanya’s solution was to sacrifice her status, as she couldn’t afford to let him be replaced.

It is said that when Akimcanya left, she promised the abbot to cultivate on her own so that when one day she came back, she’d be worthy of being the monastery’s leader.

Her name was cleared after the abbot’s departure, but everything was far too late. The monastery has been under many a ruler, getting more and more derelict with each one. If she ever comes back one day, though, everyone here will surely welcome her warmly and convince the Sangha to let her be the head.

The visitor contemplates for a moment before saying: “The lady probably won’t ever come back. She doesn’t want to come back, nor is she able to. Come to think of it, it’s not quite easy for someone who was thrust into a common life to return to the path of enlightenment.

Their words are then followed by a woeful sigh. The visitor puts the cup on the table, and quietly bids farewell.

Despite not being known as the leader of Huyền Nghi clan, Sư nương is the prime decision maker of the leading council.
She almost never leaves her secluded chamber. Her students would see her shadow on the curtain of her room, and from there she gives out instructions and advice to Sư phụ.
It is said that she is the one who thought of the method of combining the genetic information of the founders to produce eggs without actual copulation so that she can produce heirs.
Some even claim that she has never touched another dragon, or any sentient creature for that matter, in her entire life.
Sư nương is severely injured from rescuing Sư phụ, to the point that she can never walk or fly again.
Perhaps she is still cultivating behind that closed curtain, but one thing is for sure: she won’t come back.
