His Lore

Emperor Valdious Barrenfire had found Spark’s egg after he had conquered a vast territory within the Molten Scar, called the Scortch Fields. The powerful imperial dragon decided to save the egg from rotting on a cold clifface and take care of the hatchling as if it were one of his own. Many thought the emperor’s actions were done out of kindness. Although, in reality, only cold calculation had lead the emperor to take the abandoned egg. He knew that many of the newly conquered dragons still opposed his rule so he figured that taking the egg, which had come from his newly claimed territory, into his home would help him gain his new subjects’s favor.

Valdious never loved the hatchling that sprung forth from the egg he had taken, which had hatched only a couple days before his own biological son had. However, Valdious’s wife, Vernara, and his son, Ballen, had loved the hatchling as he was there own kin. Vernara had even taken it upon herself to name the hatchling Spark.

As days turned to years, Spark grew to be a very skilled fire-wielder with a fierce some loyalty to the Barrenfire family. The pearlcatcher desperately wanted to join Emperor Valdious’s army and help expand his father’s rule over the uncivilized clans beyond his borders.

However, Emperor Valdious had much bigger plans for Spark. He appointed the pearlcatcher to be a member of the Ember’s Teeth, which was an elite legion that focused on dispatching the royal family’s threats. Spark was thrilled to be granted such a high position so early in his life. The pearlcatcher didn’t hesitate to start packing his things so he could travel to the Ember’s Teeth’s nearest military camp.

As Spark’s departure date drew near, Ballen tried to convince his brother to remain in the castle because the prince feared his brother might die on the front lines. Spark hated the idea of leaving Ballen, but the young pearlcatcher knew he would never amount to anything if he stayed in Emperor Valdious’s castle, not with his common blood that ensured he’d never have a chance at ruling over anything. The pearlcatcher knew that he wouldn’t be able to stand that either, not when he had a hunger to be known for something—to be important enough to be worthy of a page alongside Ballen in the history books

So the pearlcatcher left the castle without bidding his brother farewell. He told himself it was because he was in a hurry, but—

He couldn’t possibly think of a good way to say goodbye to the dragon he had been through everything with.

~

As soon as Spark reported to Nawsar, the general in command of the Ember’s Teeth, the young pearlcatcher was instantly partnered with a female pearlcatcher named Hestia and sent off on a mission to kill three dragons who had committed treason. Much like Spark, Hestia wanted to be known for something so she was just as eager to carry out her first mission as he was.

With their whits and brute strength, the two pearlcatchers managed to successfully kill all three of their targets and their next targets and the next. As days turned to months, the two warriors soon became known as the Death’s Duet and Nawsar’s right hand dragons. The pearlcatchers struck fear into the hearts of anyone who became a threat to Barrenfire rule and left trails of blood in their wake.

For Spark, it was easy to kill dragons. He wasn’t haunted by nightmares of screams or guilt. He slept easy each night. He never really thought about the blood on his talons either because he had a reason. The dragon’s he killed—they were enemies to the family that had given him everything so naturally they were his enemies.

Many dragons called the dragons he and Hestia hunted Naomi descendants, but Spark knew them by a different name. Glitch Spawn, that’s what he called them and spat at their faces before he took their lives.

There had had been so little grey in Spark’s life back then. There had only been the glorious black and white, good and evil. Spark had always been on the good side too; he had never doubted himself.

He had everything too. Fame, power, and most importantly he had Hestia, who had become so much more than a partner in the past year. She was the love of his life. He was willing to kill for her and die for her if need be.

However, Hestia did not feel the same. Sure, she said she loved him when she had invited Spark to her bed and gotten him to yield everything to her. Although, to her those were just to her; words that would take her one step closer to the Barrenfire Throne.

~

Nawsar had misteriously died the night after Spark and Hestia had shared a bed. Spark’s entire world had turned upside down when he caught word of the news. Grief of Nawsar and the guilt of not being there to project him ransacked Spark’s heart.

Although, Hestia somehow kept him steady with her words of assurance. She continued to keep him steady to as they traveled back to the Barrenfire castle with the rest of the Ember’s Teeth to hold Nawsar funeral.

The king announced that he would appoint a new general to lead the Ember’s Teeth a week after the funeral, but in the meantime, Hestia had taken it upon herself to lead the Ember’s Teeth. No one really questioned Hestia’s move because she had been Nawsar’s right hand dragon. Spark hadn’t either, despite the fact they had been of equal rank prior to Nawsar’s death. The pearlcatcher felt like she truly deserved it, which was exactly what Hestia wanted him to feel.

~

When Spark and Hestia had arrived at the castle, trumpets had roared and confetti had fallen to horror the Barrenfire family’s elite soldiers. Emperor Valdious had crafted a fabulous speech for warriors, in which he offered his deepest condolences for their loss of Nawsar and encouraged them to carry on his legacy.

Although, none the celebrations really mattered to Spark. The only thing he had cared about seeing was his mother and brother. During the party, Spark had fortunately found his mother, Vernara. Although, Ballen was no where to be seen.

It had been two years since Spark had last seen his brother. There hadn’t been a day that had gone by where didn’t regret not saying goodbye to him. For this reason, Spark knew he had to find brother and make amends so the pearlcatcher headed to his brother’s chambers.

Little did Spark realize, he was five minutes too late.

~

The metallic smell of blood that wafted from Ballen’s room made Spark chose to burn the bedroom door instead of spending precious moments trying to push it open. With the door out of the way, the pearlcatcher leapt inside his brother’s room and nearly crumbled to his knees at the sight of what lay inside.

Ballen was lying on the ground, with wide, terror-filled eyes bulging still from his scull. The imperial dragon’s throat had torn to ribbons and his thick dark blood was pooling beneath him. Spark knew his brother was dead. He felt it deep in his soul. However, as Spark stared at his brother’s corpse, he couldn’t help but begg his brother to get up. Pathetically and pointlessly beg until his tears obscured everything around him.

He never got the chance to say goodbye.

Spark crawled across the squishy, blood-soaked carpet towards his brother and buried his head in brother’s furry mane.

He’d never get to laugh with his brother again. Never get to tell him stories about the Ember’s Teeth. Never get to see his brother’s coronation and watch him take the throne.

Never.

Spark lifted his head from his brother’s fur. There were so many things—

The pearlcatcher stopped. Stopped thinking. Breathing. It was in that moment that he noticed their was blood on the walls. His brother’s blood. It was smeared out in a way to form letters. Letters that formed a single phrase:

Naomi shall rise again.

A Naomi Descendant had done this. In that moment, Spark became so angry that
