Backstory:
Nyx, despite what her name might imply, had never really liked the dark nor had any real connection to it. Her parents had been simple farmers who had spent their whole lives tending to their crops in the Shattered Plain. Nyx had loved getting her paws dirty and helping out her parents with the farm beneath the warm sun. She was well known in her family for being the first to fall asleep at dusk and the first to awaken at dawn. The tundra also had an irrational fear of the dark growing up that prevented her from staying up late, which really added to unfittingness of her name.

The only reason she had been given the name Nyx was because her parents had come across another dragon with the name Nyx and thought it was a pretty name. They had absolutely no idea the name “Nyx” had been the name of some otherworldly goddess of night...or at least, they didn’t until their relatives began to joke about how Nyx would grow up to be some shadowy sorceress.

Nyx didn’t really care though. She was very content with her name and the simple life she had been given. Although, as Nyx grew, she began to realize that she and her family weren’t really as simple as she had initially thought. Her mother, Madena, could move objects with her mind and her father, Ramedar, regularly conversed with the dead. Nyx, herself, could open portals to other dimensions sometimes on command, but mostly on accident. Both of her parents, and Nyx along with them, believed that their entire world was an online game and the fate of every dragon was determined by these beings called “Users.” For the longest time, Nyx had thought these traits and beliefs were common among dragons.

It was on the day when her parents had invited their neighbors to her family harvest party and Nyx blabbed to them about how her father had talked to an old gaoler, who had died thousands of years ago, that she realized that was not the case. Her neighbors had looked utterly shocked after hearing short tale. Her father had quickly jumped into the conversation and dismissed all of what Nyx had said by claiming the tundra hatchling had overactive imagination. Then, Ramedar, pulled Nyx aside and told her not speak about their abilities for the rest of the harvest party. Nyx asked why. Her father replied by promising that he and her mother would explain, once all of the guests were gone.

Staying true to their promise, Madena and Ramedar sat down with their daughter after they had bid their guests farewell and explained that their family was very special because they were the descendants of a powerful dragon called Naomi. They told Nyx that Naomi had been a powerful sorceress with magic that rivaled the eleven gods, mostly impart because she was a living glitch in the system.

Her parents explained that, initially, Naomi had been a faithful follower of the Arcanist and held a heavy respect for the other gods as well despite the fact that her powers were equal to their’s. However, once the gods learned about Naomi’s magic, they feared that she would defeat them and rule over Sornieth as the land’s sole deity so they sent assassins to dispatch Naomi and her family.

The assassins managed to kill Naomi’s mate and all of her children (or so they thought) in their sleep, but there were not as fortunate when they got to Naomi. Earlier that night, Naomi’s eldest daughter, Willow, had a nightmare so Naomi had curled up in bed with the hatchling to make her child feel safe. When the assassins came into Willow’s room, Naomi quickly paralyzed the killers with her magic and later, killed them in blind rage once she saw the bodies they had left in their wake.

From there, Naomi fled with her only living child to the farthest edges of the Dragonhome and raised an army made entirely of dragons she had freed from exaltation. The sorceress planned to over throw the gods so they could never harm another dragon like they had harmed her, but in the end, the eleven gods defeated her. However, they did not take the Glitch Queen’s life since she was far the to powerful to be fully killed. The gods instead forced Naomi to guide dragon’s souls from the world of the living to the world of the dead for the rest of eternity.

With Naomi trapped in the place between life and death, the eleven gods thought that they had finally rid Sornieth of Naomi's erratic and unnatural magic. They spun lies about Naomi was an evil Shade-touched dragon who desired nothing, but chaos. The gods were certain that they had gotten all future generations of dragons to belief it too. Little did they know, Willow was still alive.

The Glitch Queen’s daughter vowed to spread the truth about her mother’s magic to her children and all of her descendants and perhaps one day raise an army of her own against the gods.

After her parents had finished speaking, Nyx was practically bouncing off the walls with questions. She couldn’t believe that a simple dragon like herself could be a descendant of heroine like Naomi. And at first, she felt that she was truly blessed to be apart of such a powerful lineage.

A couple years later, she learned that greatest blessings could easily turn into the greatest curses.

Nyx was just reaching adolescence on the day before she came to that conclusion. The tundra had been heading back from the fields with her mother, chatting about something that wasn’t going to matter in a few minutes. Then, the tundra just happened to look up as a giant fireball crashed into her house, where she knew her father was.

Nyx screamed and sprinted towards the burning home, but her mother stopped her by grabbing her shoulder.

“Nyx, we have to go!” Her mother warned, frantically.

“But father—!” Nyx pleaded.

“Nyx, he’s gone!” Her mother shrieked

Nyx flinched at her mother’s words and barely registered the gravity of them, but when her mother gripped her paw and pulled her away from their house, the tundra ran. And continued to run and run until—

A flaming arrow shot through her mother’s skull.

“Mom!” Nyx practically sobbed as she saw the fire consume her mother’s fur and cook her flesh. The tundra reached for her mother, but the second burning arrow that whizzed past her head made her freeze. The tundra jerked her head in the direction the arrow had been fired and saw—with terror struck eyes—an army of fire dragons charging in her direction. She caught a glimpse of one of the banners soldiers carried and the symbol it bore: Two flaming swords crossing over one another to form an X. Nyx knew that symbol. It was the sigil of royal Barrenfire family that was infamously known for the great lengths it had gone to destroy the Naomi Bloodline.

Run. Her mother’s voice echoed in her head. Run.

Without much hesitation, the tundra did just that.

She ran. And kept running, until she had crossed the river that separated the Dragonhome from the the Tangled Wood and melted into the pine trees’ shadows. Only then, did the tundra stop and allow herself to cry. She crumbled to the ground and buried her head into her furry limps. Then, she wailed as her chest heaved and her wings shook.

Her parents were gone. She never speak to them again. Never laugh with them. Never hear them say I love you again. Never.

The tundra sobbed louder and her magic surged. Instantly, portals opened up all around her and sucked entire trees out of the ground. The wind wiped through her fur as the air was pulled into the gapping mouths of her portals. The tundra looked up at the chaotic mess swirling above her with dead, grey eyes.

Never. The word pulsed through her and hallowed out her heart.

~

After all of Nyx’s portal had collapsed on themselves and she had regained a little bit of her composure, tundra started working to make a fire as the sun began to set. Now, fire making had never been the tundra’s strong suit so it took the task took young dragon a long time. Little did the tundra know, something was watching her and moving closer with every attempt she made to get her fire going.

“You’re one of them, aren’t you?” A distinctly male voice asked.

Nyx’s ears instantly flicked behind her—towards the voice—as she stopped moving. Her heart began to rapidly pump blood through her veins.

“Who’s them?” She asked as she remained perfectly still.

“Do I really have to tell you?” He drawled as Nyx heard his footfalls bringing him closer to her. “What has been the most obvious thing that has separated you and the rest of your filthy kind from normal dragons?”

Nyx’s blood went cold. She swallowed hard and desperately tried to keep herself from shaking.

“What do you want?” She bit out.

The male finally walked infront of her view. The tundra could easily tell that he was a pearlcatcher with just one look at the pale orb he held with his hind foot and his long, curly whiskers. Nyx could also tell he was a warrior just by looking at the menacing, spiked obsidian armor he wore on his hind legs. Although, what terrified Nyx most was the pearlcatcher’s amber eyes that narrowed on her own. With a shiver, Nyx realized those eyes were the same color as the Barrenfire soldiers’.

“I want you to tell me everything about the Naomi descendants and how you can rid a descendant of their power.” The pearlcatcher ordered.

Nyx stepped back and blinked at him in surprise. Remove a Naomi descendant’s power? Why on earth would he wish to do that?

“You can’t rid a Naomi descendant of their power, even in death.” She told him, still in disbelief of his request.

The tundra could have sworn she saw dread in the pearlcatcher’s eyes.

“There has to be a way.” He said, quietly and urgently.

Nyx shook her head. Then, the pearlcatcher grabbed her by the shoulders and, suddenly, Nyx could barely breathe. Not because she was scared, but because she felt that familiar magic pulsing from him and felt a pull—to him.

“Please,” He begged, with fearful eyes. “I’ll give anything if you just tell me how to get rid of that power.”

“I’m sorry, but our magic—it’s apart of our very souls and woven so deeply that inside that it can never be severed.”

The pearlcatcher let go of Nyx’s shoulders and took a step back, with his wide eyes locked onto her.

“O-our?” He croaked.

Nyx grinned maliciously at him, revealing her dagger-like canines.

“You know it takes a Naomi descendant to find a Naomi descendant.” She told him as his face paled.

~

Nyx made a bargain with the pearlcatcher, who’s name was Spark apparently. She would tell him everything she knew about Naomi descendants and keep silent about Spark’s Naomi given powers. In return, Spark would deliver Nyx to a place Barrenfire soldiers weren’t allowed to set foot in, an island that belonged to the Aquafire Clan.

However, the journey wasn’t pleasant. Mostly because Spark was, to put in kid friendly terms, a jerk. A self-centered, whining jerk who hadn’t worked a day in his life until now. The tundra was constantly butting heads with the pearlcatcher about how to get literally everything done.

Although, the most insufferable aspect of the journey was that pull Nyx still felt inside her core that drew her closer to the pearlcatcher she despised so much. It never went away, no matter how long the tundra ignored it. Nyx knew what the pull meant to. It was rare phenomenon that occurred among Naomi descendants called the bloodlock. The bloodlock, in essence, was an ancient primordial bond that would draw to descendants of Naomi together and make them instinctively protect each other much like a guardian dragon would do for their charge. Her great great great great great grandmother, Mara had had it and her parents had had it. According to her parents, the purpose of the bloodlock was to keep the Naomi lines strong and only formed between two descendants who were perfectly compatible.

Although, that couldn’t possibly be true in her case. It had to be some fluke, because Spark clearly didn’t feel the pull of the bloodlock on his end and he was, in no shape or form, Nyx’s perfect match.

Or at least, that was she thought up until the night they were attacked by shade-possessed serthis. They came every direction and couldn’t stop moaning about how they longed to consume their power. Nyx managed to suck many of the serthis into her portals, but the possessed creatures kept coming and eventually tackled the two traveling dragons. Spark had managed to wriggle out from under the serthis pinning him against the ground. In that moment, the pearlcatcher had the perfect opportunity to run. Nyx has certain he was going to run away too and that she was going to die alone in the darkness of the Tangled Wood.

Although, Spark didn’t run away. He ran towards her. Furry blazed in his eyes as he knocked the serthis off of her and stood over the tundra, in order to shield her from more serthis assaults. The serthis clawed and pounded against his back, yet Spark just stood there and took it all—for her.

Then, fire and wispy ebony smoke—Nyx instantly recognized as the Shade’s magic—expelled from the pearlcatcher’s body and completely vaporized the remaining serthis. Nyx could only gawk at the pearlcatcher as he continued to stand with a heaving chest. Spark had used the Shade’s magic, which only meant one thing: he had the ability to steal his opponents’s power like Naomi had.

Very few Naomi descendants inherited the power to take someone’s magic from Naomi. However, the ones that could were notorious for winning on the battle field.

Spark looked down at Nyx, with his frustratingly beautiful fire eyes.

“Are you alright?” He asked as his ears flicked in her direction.

Nyx nodded and whispered the words thank you to him.

~

Spark had wanted to keep moving and get out of serthis’s territory, but Nyx wouldn’t let him move an inch until she bandaged his wounds. She knew that bloodlock was making her seem all fussy, but, frankly, the tundra didn’t care. Every inch her wanted to ease his pain and protect him from further harm.

She didn’t know why either, but she found herself telling Spark about her parents and how they had died. It was the first time she spoke their names in a month and even though remembering their murder brought tears to her eyes, it still felt...good somehow to talk about it. Spark gently stroked away her tears with his talons and listened in solemn silence.

After Nyx had finished speaking, Spark told her his own tale about how he had been adopted Emperor Valdious Barrenfire and raised to believe all Naomi descendants were evil. The pearlcatcher, then, told her about his adoptive brother’s murder at the hands of a Naomi descendant. He even let her know about the story of his former lover, Hestia and how she had shattered both his world and his heart when she had told his father about his newly discovered Naomi-given power.

The pearlcatcher confessed that he had taken the lives of many Naomi descendants and even though none of them had been her parents, he apologized to her. He kept looking at Nyx as he told about that last part. Waiting for her to strike him and yell or call him something horrible.

Although, Nyx just continued to listen to the pearlcatcher because even though his actions had been horrible, their had been a reason for them. After everything he had told her, the tundra felt like she was finally seeing him for the first time.

And she couldn’t help, but marvel at the beauty of his gleaming amber eyes.

~

Nothing was quite the same after that night they had shared their stories together. They still fought of course as they made long trek to the Aquafire Clan, but there was a light-hearted ness to their arguments now.

Nyx continued to tell Spark stories about Naomi descendants and she even started to help him practice using his magic. However, the tundra still hadn’t told the pearlcatcher about the bloodlock yet...mostly because Spark was still planning to part ways when they made it to the Aquafire Clan and she didn’t want him to feel bound to her.

Although, as she and Spark grew closer to their destination, a nott started to form in her stomach. She’d never see him again and never know if he was truly safe. The tundra started to dread the day they’d reach the Aquafire Clan.

However, regardless of how she felt that final day still came.

~

Spark unlocked the door to Nyx’s apartment and held it open so she could walk in. The pearlcatcher said he wouldn’t leave until the Aquafire Clan’s ruler’s gave her a place to stay and he had been truthful to his words. He was being a little fussy she realized...but she sup posed, with an aching heart, it didn’t matter now.

He was leaving anyway.

“Nyx.” He croaked as he remained at the door way.

Nyx quickly turned her head in the pearlcatcher’s direction. She could instantly tell by the heavy sadness in his eyes that this was goodbye. No. She thought. She couldn’t say goodbye. Not yet.

“Could you stay just a little longer?” She asked, desperately trying to keep the urgency out of her voice.

“Nyx.” The pearlcatcher said, softly. “I have already stayed for to long. My ship leaves in ten minutes.”

“I know, but it would probably only take you only a few minutes to fly down there.”

The pearlcatcher raised an eyebrow at her.

“What? I’m just saying. Besides, you could probably just stay in my apartment and wait for the next ship if you missed this one.” The tundra replied.

“Nyx, you do realize my father will stop at nothing to hunt me down.” The pearlcatcher warned. “I’d be endangering you if I stayed here.”

Nyx looked her bloodlocked right in the eye.

“I don’t care.” She replied, unflinching.

Spark blinked at her and froze still.

“You’d really want to spend the more time with an honorary member of the Barrenfire House?” He whispered, with shock written all over his face.

Nyx looked down at her talons and felt the heat building beneath the fur on her cheeks. She knew was selfish to keep him here, but—

“Yes.” She admitted.

Suddenly, before the tundra could do anything, Spark swooped in and kissed her. Then, he promptly “forgot” about the ship he needed to catch...

Personality:
Nyx is extremely helpful and caring. However, the tundra still sometimes likes to break the rules from time to time and keep her friends guessing. Nyx is known for being a clutz and often see tripping on her fur, but when normal dragons would be embarrassed, Nyx embraces clumsiness and falls with style. Like most tundras, Nyx is naturally forgetful and is the kind of dragon who would lose her head if weren’t attached to her shoulders. Her faulty short-term memory often cause her to scatter items around in the great abyss that is her room. Fortunately though, she has Spark around to help her.

Clan Position:
Nyx tends to the Aquafire Clan’s crops with Gloria and also works to educate other dragons about Naomi descendants.

Familiar:
Not long after Nyx arrived on the Aquafire Clan’s island, everyone became convinced that the clan’s restrooms were haunted after hearing screams coming from its stalls. Everyone was far too scared to relief themselves in the bathrooms anymore. However, Nyx raced down to the restrooms as soon as she heard there was an alleged ghost in there because she had always wanted to see the undead in action.

However, the tundra was quite disappointed to realize upon entering one of the bathroom that all the screaming had come from one little manticore, which had gotten trapped in there. Nyx knew she should have probably have given the manticore to Fiero, the beast tamer, but the creature was so darn cute that she decided to bring him back to her apartment.

Nyx later named the creature Bangu and made him her official familiar, despite Spark’s protests and warnings. She and Bangu continue to get in a whole buttload of trouble together, but the fun they have while doing it is totally worth it.
