Biography

Kaiku was the middle child in her full fae litter having two brothers. She was born blind which was noticed first by her big brother Megabrain who treated her like she could not do anything and like she was stupid. Not wanting to feel lesser she refused to accept help if she was offered that and insisted to do everything by herself even when her lack of sight made some things near impossible for her.

Doing everything by herself, though hard, was doable when she was young but things got way harder once she stepped into the world of bigger dragons. She had to stay up in the trees to not get crushed but being blind she couldn’t tell where branches were or how well they would stand her weight she often falling down because of that. She was usually able to find the tree again thanks to her sensitivity to magic around her but the noises around her often interfered her senses and dragons offering to help her annoyed her.

Life was hard for Kaiku she being small and needing to stay up on trees but she kept falling from them. Other dragons didn’t seem to be willing to give her chance to try anything and she felt them pitying her no matter where she was. Because of that she was constantly on bad mood and wanting something to do she was often fighting with whoever dared to offer to help her get food or anything like that. Though being able to sense magic around her it was too overwhelming for her size to help her.

Months passed by Kaiku’s nights being very samey she trying to get from one place to another, someone offered to help her and she started to fight with them not wanting to be seen as weak. One night Afrodite came to talk with Kaiku and she, expecting her to help her to get to the tree from where she had just dropped, took an offensive stance against her. The older dragon though was not having any of that and Kaiku felt a mild shock when she ordered her to shut up. She gave her exactly two options: either let her turn her into a skydancer, a breed with better senses when it came to magic, or let her turn her into a skydancer.

Kaiku felt like Afrodite was implying she had no worth as blind fae and denied the offer the older dragon explaining that as skydancer she would not need to hide in trees all the time it being a bigger breed and she could compensate her lack of sight with energy reading that was natural to her kind. Also, she said Kaiku having been very annoying lately. Kaiku had heard of Siren who had been a fae with colorful voice who had gotten more accepted after becoming what was called a coatl and finding some parallels between them Kaiku allowed Afrodite to use the breed change scroll on her.

Getting used to new body was somewhat hard for Kaiku she having gotten used to hide in trees but being now way too big to do that. She also often hit whatever with her now massive wings but the forejewel made pinpointing energy sources around her easier which improved her sense of directions a little bit. Others though still thought she needed help and she was still annoyed by that. She was offended that even when she was able to poke their nose without too big of miss they still thought she couldn’t do anything and still found herself picking up fights almost daily.

She was so fed up by all that that when Storm went missing she asked to come with the search team despite having never left the lair. The ones organizing the search party were not too sure about letting her come with them she not knowing how to fly but she insisted to come with them wanting to prove she could do something. Being blind her senses were better than anyone else’s and she should be able to catch signs of the missing dragon better than others. The others were still skeptical but let her come with them she riding Obsidius as they took of.

Kaiku didn’t actually know Storm and didn’t know what kind of energy she emitted but kept senses open for anything out of place. They flew across the area where the spiral might be Kaiku eventually noticing hints of arcane energy in non-arcane area and something very disgusting. She guided the bigger dragon to where the things she sensed were strongest and eventually she was able to pinpoint where it all was coming from. Judging by Obsidius’ reaction they found what they were looking for.

After the incident, though still being offered help, the clan seemed to gain some trust in Kaiku’s abilities despite her lack of sight. More importantly Kaiku started to have some trust in her own abilities the clan having understated them for so long. She still stayed in the lair keeping her legs on the ground but started to search things to do for her clan but mainly to feel like she had something to do, truly.

After finding some validation Kaiku started to search for things she could do. As she was going through them she learned that she could read text by turning it into symbols with different energy charges and read it through that. Learning that though was challenging she needing to ask someone to read the spells for her until she could translate them for herself usually asking Kupari to do that for her. However, as she learned to read the text herself she asked her help less and less.

One evening, when she was reading some random books, Kaiku heard Kaamos teaching hatchlings how to read. Either the hatchling-sitter was doing bad job or the hatchlings were being hard but for some reason they were making a lot of noise and that was annoying Kaiku. She went to tell them to be quiet noticing that hatchlings were not listening Kaamos or her and Kaiku not in the mood to deal with being reminded of her blindness forced them to listen as she took the job to teach them.

Kaiku was able to sense how her sharp senses scared younger dragons and thanks to that she was able keep discipline as she taught them the basic letters. If someone pointed out that she should not be able to read or count she made them read the floating magical text. Kaiku came to teach hatchlings every night until they were old enough to leave and she was happy to return to read. Pilkku, however, came to meet her before she was able to start and she tried to not get too annoyed. The nocturne who worked as hatchling doctor was impressed by Kaiku’s way of teaching, at least that was how Kaiku understood his dry voice, and told that if she ever wanted something to do she was welcomed to come teach more hatchling when the clan had those. Kaiku never had anything meaningful to do and asked Pilkku to come tell her when she had some teaching to do. She was happy to take any job even if she didn’t like it that much.

After that time carried on rather samey for Kaiku except for the fact her fights with others decreased in quantity. Other than occasional students arriving from overseas the clan didn't have that many hatchlings and Kaiku just spent most of her time in the library where she met with Hanako. The snapper had her problems with her own eyes, not blindness but something like that, and though Kaiku wouldn't call them friends they got along nicely.

Due to her status as teacher Kaiku was one night visited by Pernis and Rosalin, two annoying architects who she tolerated only because of why they came to meet her. They wanted to redesign clan's temple and wanted to ask Kaiku's opinion on classroom she could use to do her job. Though unable to see their plans she was still able to feel how they would be like thanks to their hologram spells and she felt good to be asked opinions about something it giving her sense of having importance.

The temple was soon to be start its production and Kaiku was preparing to a lot of noise building it would cause. However, she had not expected it to be as loud as it ended up being when clan's familiars turned hostile the lair being filled with their angry noises and confused screams from the residents. When that happened Kaiku was studying new writing symbols just for fun she suddenly noticing a foul nature spell creeping in she feeling its effect on her companion vulstal. She avoided injuries but she wished she could have asked for sick leave.

Kaiku was feeling almost overwhelmed by the noise in the clan during the following weeks and the atmosphere did not help with that. She spent her time mostly teaching the plague dragons who had arrived to study though Kaiku knew their primary motive was to strike from the inside the clan being almost at war with one plague clan. Despite of the situation the plague dragons did treat Kaiku with kindness she being rather confused by that though it could have been that they respected her for having taken the teacher's job despite of her disability.

The situation with familiars had not gotten any better when the plague dragons finally left and Kaiku decided to visit the Observatory to do some studying as it was time for the House Cup. She liked studying the higher stuff and spells not available for normal clan's and wondered if she should start studying in there when not teaching others. That could be fun but not being sure if it was satisfying she pushed the thought back of her mind and returned home to give it some time.

Back at home the clan was basically falling apart the leaders being nowhere to seen and missing were also their guardians and most of the ambassadors. Kaiku didn't care about that and just was by herself in the library. One evening her senses noticed earth magic moving below her feet and expecting an earthquake she walked out of the building just in time for ground to start shaking. She rose back up once it stopped having lied down to avoid injuries. The clan was confused by the turn of events Kaiku feeling strong fear which grew even stronger once someone declared to summon the Shade in few days.

After that living in the lair got painful for Kaiku due to the overall atmosphere, still angry familiars, angry and scared dragons and strong spells that kept the lair sealed. Kaiku couldn't see them but she felt magical trees keeping everyone inside the massive earth pillar that walled the clan and she felt the mages having caused all of that follow her every step. She didn't want to get stressed over the situation but the closer the summoning came the more nervous she felt she eventually deciding to hide in her nest when the day finally came. That though ended up being nothing the wicked magic managing to find her there it taking control over her skeleton.

Kaiku was scared and asked the being keeping her hostage to let her go refusing its offer for becoming its servant. She wasn't sure what happened but the being's power eventually let her go and soon after that she heard battle noises outside. They sounded like from all out war and she decided to stay inside the amount of magic thrown across the lair being overwhelming even when she wasn't in the middle of all that. When the situation started to sound like being calming down she decided to go out to feel the damage done hoping no one was to ask why she didn't join the battles.

The clan had been so desperate that they had had to ask outside help to overcome the crisis and once it was over more dragons arrived to check the ambassadors most being taken to the elemental capitals to get their magic back and to check the non-arcane dragons living in the clan. The clan was currently missing wind and light ambassadors having never had those, and a nature ambassador who was fired for the second time now, and out of those wind and nature dragons had arrived to aid the clan light representatives being totally absent.

Kaiku listened wind messengers and few others talk if they should get someone from the Ruins as Benizakura, a light dragon, had been turned into stone following the earthquake. As Kaiku listened the conversation she realized that she could take the job of a light ambassador to have chance at studying stuff that wasn't that common in arcane land. The clan only had two light dragons and she could potentially handle that job along her teacher duties.

The messengers got a light dragon to check the older pearlcatcher and after they had done that, while talking with other high scholars, Kaiku came to meet them finding them thanks to their strong light magic. She focused on to not let her easily offended side ruin the moment as she asked if she could take the job of an ambassador at least temporarily expecting some kind of comment about her sight. The light dragon was polite enough to not point out the flaw and they took Kaiku with them as they left so she could talk with the the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of The Beacon of the Radiant Eye. They gave her the job and she returned home bearing the symbols but she prepared for them to be temporal, either because she got bored of the job or because someone more dedicated wanted it. However, as times went on Kaiku noticed she enjoyed her job as light ambassador, maybe because of sense of importance it gave her, and eventually decided to become full light ambassador instead of a temporal one. As she had already worked as ambassador for some time already, decision to become full-time granted her the ultimate symbol of status, the halo.

Traits

Kaiku is an arcane skydancer with blue body having petal markings, darker toes and fingers and white belly. Her mane and wings are grey with wings and head feathers having butterfly pattern with a bit of sand color and she has grey spines sticking out of her mane all the way to the tail tip and decorating sides of her neck. Though having originally been a fae it is rather hard to notice from her the only hint being her large cheek feathers. Her forejewel is smooth oval pale blue and her antennae are normal size with very fluffy tips and likewise her tail tuft is very fluffy. Kaiku was born blind and her eyes have always been watching different directions never focusing on the same target. To avoid shock from others when realizing she is blind she has modified her eyes to be very pale, almost milky to signify she is, in fact, blind.

Because Kaiku is blind she hasn’t really decided her own look but has let others decide what she wears and they have given her mostly blue clothes. She wears a blue dress and on that she has blue cape and on that bluish purple collar with a blue gem all of them just looking pretty on her. She also has blue veil covering her eyes to tell others she doesn’t see wanting to avoid situation where someone assumes she can see only to realize she can’t. Kaiku has few gems decorating her having pale blue ones on her veil, collar and tail tuft and dark blue ring on her right middle finger. Though they look pretty they are rather important for Kaiku as they act as extra forejewels for her allowing her to sense her surrounding better. Gems on her tail and chest tell her where she is standing and where her tail is when compared to that, the ring reads ground telling her where she is standing and how things are affecting it and the jewel on her forehead filters anything that might be distracting allowing her focus better with her main gem on her forehead. Kaiku also has rose thorns decorating her wings but their only reason is to give others reason to not walk into them. As she is also clan's light ambassador she also wears ambassador's status symbols emblem, tome and the halo.

Kaiku tends to stay quiet wanting to hear her environment better but that doesn’t mean she won’t say back. She has low tolerance to being reminded of her blindness any way and she is fast to spit out very cold, harsh and prickly words if she is annoyed. She is outspoken and isn’t afraid of saying what she feels though she may make things sound much bigger than what they actually are. She has mild Estonian accent.

Small pile of pink petals.

Kaiku is prickly dragon who is often at least grumpy and is angered quite easily. Due to her blindness she feels constant need to prove herself to others and hates to be offered help seeing that as indirect way of saying she is worthless. Feeling her worth being constantly questioned she is fast to take a defensive stand which means she can get very rude and hostile very fast. That though doesn’t usually last very long as she starts sulking once she is left alone and calms down before sunrise. She was notorious of being hard dragon to be nearby when she was a fae and even after the breed change but as she has gotten some proof that she can actually do something she has calmed down a little bit. She though still doesn’t stand setbacks.

Kaiku feels being judged by other dragons and tends to avoid dragon company though she usually makes the problem way bigger due to having been bullied by her brother due to her lack of sight. She doesn’t really have friend or other dragons with who she would be close or who she would care about. Most of her interactions are insignificant one time meetings that don’t really contribute anything. She though is very introvert dragon and doesn’t mind being alone. She is also sure that spending time with anyone would just overwhelm her sensitive senses. Still, she enjoys to have some importance and be respected.

Though avoiding company Kaiku has a pet tourmaline vulstal she calls Echo. He was given to her as a gift after the missing dragon incident and though not really caring about the vulstal she tolerates him. Echo can’t speak which for Kaiku is a huge positive feature but he can understand dragon speech and even writing he often bringing Kaiku books to read. He also looks after her and often joins Kaiku if she gets into fight growling to who ever angered his owner. He often sleeps under Kaiku’s wing and wakes her up when the clan is getting up. After becoming a full-on ambassador Kaiku got her ambassador familiar in form of spirit of light called Dawn. Dawn isn't that talky being totally mute if not for occasional telepathy. It mostly spends its time in Kaiku's office being there if she needs help but it mostly just minds its own business, which is reading and writing.

Small pile of pink petals.

Kaiku is able to use some spells but she tends to not use the most common levitation or size altering spells she having hard time aiming them though she can still cast them if needed. Instead she uses spells that allow her read despite her lack of sight. Being blind Kaiku’s other senses are way more sensitive than other dragons' and that includes the energy reading natural for skycancers. She is able to use spell to turn text into floating magic symbols with each letter having different charge which she can then read with her energy sensing ability. Unlike other skydancers she hasn’t specialized into certain type of energy but reads them all well.

Kaiku can’t fly her lack of sight making it near impossible to learn. She can take flight but the energy that surrounds her as she rises up, which is different to the energy the ground has, overwhelms her easily and she loses sense of gravity not knowing where the ground is until hitting it. She also has hard time telling where her wings’ tips are and she could hit them into something when trying to fly as focusing on the area right in front of her would take all of her attention.
