Iapetus was born into a clan of scholars, dedicated to the study of magic and its relation to the Shade.

Iapetus was one of the strongest researchers, figuring out the right runes that would, in theory, dispel the Shade. Only in theory though, for his clan never left their quaint lair in the Crystalspine Reaches. Iapetus became frustrated that his work could not be properly tested. Surely, they couldn't sell research that hadn't been tested? How many deaths or infections was his clan responsible for?

So he stole away in the night, spear spattered in runes in his hand. Using the senses he had honed so well, he tracked a Shadetouched dragon to the depths of the Starwood Strand. One slice with the spear sent the dark entity reeling for its host, but did not kill it.

It knocked the weapon from Iapetus' claws, and on instinct he reached out with his magic and grabbed it.

It latched onto him, and burrowed in, but in a moment of genius Iapetus used that same magic to trap it. The Shade was inside him, but could not reach out, could not infect him. He kept his mind and its far apart.

In a way, he was ecstatic. What better way to study the Shade, than to have it with you at all times?

The symptoms persisted, though. His skin began to crackle black from his heart outwards, his eyes darkened, and the shadows poured from his mouth. When he returned home, his clan was terrified of him. They turned him away at the gates, despite his best reasoning.

It was hard for him to find a clan to stay in, with such obviously Shadetouched symptoms. His pearl turned black from recording memories with tainted soul, and Iapetus soon felt lost.

He could make money killing the Shade, though. Well, clients thought he was killing it. Really, he was adding it to the cage inside him, more samples to study.

Hellreek was in the middle of a Shade crisis, and Iapetus' looks couldn't scare them. He settled in, and fit in immediately. He is now an integral part of the lair, making sure the Shade doesn't ever get as out of hand as it was before.
