it takes a certain kind of dragon, to hunt the beasts that crawl up between earth and plague. eris grew up so close to that chasm that their clan was breathing down its neck. in the dead of night, they could hear the roaring of beasts, so frequently in their youth that they learned to let it put them to sleep. if the clan is not wealthy enough to pay for a funeral, they would drop their dead into the gap between earth and plague. eris has seen an emperor with a thousand heads, seen skeletons walk again, heard the wailing of spirits from eons ago. and their clan was the last front in hunting them. it would sometimes take a hundred dragon or more, with blade and harpoon and arrow, to take down an emperor the size these monstrosities crawl from the depths as. it wasn't uncommon for eris to wake up with the other younglings and find the camp barren, weapons gone, only for the clan to come back days later sporting wounds and missing warriors. they were, after all, the last of their kind. and eris flourished. they raised their hatchlings communally; eris doesn't know who their parents are, but that doesn't matter because they have dozens of them, a hundred siblings all who love them. it is tradition to go into the divide and slay a beast with the one who taught the protege how to hold a blade, and eris comes out the other side bloody and bleeding and alive, carving a grin onto the face of their mentor. they are written into the schedule. they were going to go out the next week. eris was going to be named holy. instead, they wake up and the clan is gone. this is normal. they spar with the younglings. and the adults don't come back. and they don't come back the next day. or the day after. eris is left the oldest of many children. the growls that echo up from the abyss no longer soothe them at night. they are no longer safe here - there are not enough reliable blades to kill anything that would claw up from the depths. they take it upon themselves to find a new home for all of them, whether or not it would kill them. they put on armour a size too big and pick up their sword. the earthlands aren't much of anything, outside its few bustling cities and the silk roads, the spice trails. it's mostly sand and cracked ground, very little water. they have no treasure to their name. eris is not proud of the numbers they lost. and when they finally sink to their knees, somewhere in the middle of the plaguelands, they can at least say they saved a couple of them. got them to new clans, new lives. and just as they start feeling fuzzy around the edges, a claw enters their vision. the drake on the other end of it wears a mask and no expression. and he says i know who you are and where you come from. i have seen this life and the one before. i know where we must be, for your heart is good and your skills are strong. there's nothing left to lose. so she goes. |
