She had been able to hold off the emperor for a while, but even her illusion magic combined with Kulshan was not enough to hold it off forever. Deep scratches laced her body, though the emperor sported a few of its own thanks to Kyra's tactics. The emperor roared, and made a move on the dragons scattering below. It snatched a few smaller prisoners in its mouths and swallowed them whole. "Everyone! Fall back into the barrier!" Nymph ordered. Everyone heeded her call, and soon the members of Windkeep Tower were safely inside. That was when Nymph realized the prisoners were still outside. She swore. "We can't leave them out there! Whoever is able to fight, let's stand by their side!" Nymph called, and emerged through the barrier. "Quartz, if you are going to do any good, get out there and give the most injured ones the rune until they all have the option to return to safety!" Quartz, looking shaken up, was almost about to refuse, then he lay eyes on Runeclaw's body, still left outside. He owed it to them, for messing up so badly. With a nod, he finished wrapping a bandage around his cuts and took flight to help the dragons he had once imprisoned. Nymph followed shortly after him, directing the prisoners to Quartz and then taking to the skies to distract the emperor. She flew around it in high circles, though she only distracted one head. Mercer's head let out a blast of shadow magic towards the barrier. It shattered, the magical fragments disintegrating as the spell fell apart. Windkeep Tower was open, and no one was safe. The dragons who had been cowering inside raced out. Some took to the skies or the hills, trying to get away from the mass destruction the emperor was causing. Others surged forward, hoping to help defeat the raging beast. Others were frozen, cowering in fear and unsure which they wanted. "Move!" Juliette shouted at Thorburn, who was staring wide-eyed at the emperor. he had not joined in on the fighting, and he now seemed terrified to have his safe haven destroyed. Thorburn seemed not to hear Juliette, and simply stared at the emperor as Mercer's head powered up another charge in his direction. "You idiot!" Juliette shrieked, and bowled him out of the way just seconds before Mercer hurled another bolt of shadow energy, turning the grass beneath it to black sludge. The pair tumbled across the ground and Juliette landed on top of him. "Stand and fight, or run and hide!" She shouted at the bogsneak. "You gain nothing being a useless lump!" Thorburn simply stared at her, wide-eyed, as if he was seeing her for the first time. "You saved my life." He murmured. "Yes, and I'm not doing it again, you are on your own!" Juliette took the the skies and began to help her aunt heard dragons into the tower in the hopes of giving them a safe place to be for just a bit longer. Thorburn huffed and began to make his way towards the battle, ignoring the pain on his finger. The ring had been burning since the start of the battle, Daisy Mae's message to kill Quartz. He felt something on the edge of his consciousness, and he fought to hold it off. "Mercer, you have destroyed my life once, I am not letting you do it again!" Carmen hissed as she calmly walked towards what remained of her husband. Sparks were flying around her and dark clouds were forming. A big storm was coming, and Carmen was the center of it all. She stood with no fear, for the first time in many years, facing the very dragon who had plagued her since she was a young thing recovering from battle trauma. She shot lightning at the emperor and it roared in pain, a hole seared through its chest. Yet, the undead being moved ever forward, only slightly hindered. The storm still raged around Carmen, she was letting everything loose. Suddenly, there was a gust of icy wind, swirling the storm around and creating a vortex of storm. Rubywing and Rhowen flew next to Carmen, and the skydancer began to push her magic to push forward the storm until it completely surrounded the emperor. The wind began to get colder and colder and Rhowen let more and more of his power break lose from within him. Ruby smiled at him and continued to swirl the storm around the emperor until it was encased in a vortex of magic that is was unable to break free of. "Thanks for your help." Carmen said, exchanging a meaningful look with Rhowen. "It's good to see you on our side." "Always." Rhowen smirked. "Now, what do you say we encase this bad boy in ice and send him off to join the Icewarden's collection?" "That sounds like an excellent plan." Rubywing said, her face breaking into a smirk as well. "If I never see an emperor again, it will be too soon." "Can you concentrate your ice powers enough to get through the storm?" Carmen asked. The vortex was getting big enough that the wind was beginning to buffet the three dragons creating it. They had to pin their wings close to their bodies to stop from being swept away in the gale. "We can help." A voice sounded behind them. A spiral and a mirror joined the line of dragons. "Let down the storm and we can bind it in place long enough for you to turn it into a popsicle!" It was the spiral who had spoken. "I'm Moira by the way, the spirit of the bamboo forest that once grew where the tower stands. I have vowed to protect this land no matter what." "And we are Schism." The mirror said, looking to where she thought the other dragons were. It was clear that she was unable to see in the usual sense. "Sorry, I am Schism. It's a bit difficult in here. If I can harness the shade's power long enough to use it but not be taken over by it, I can hold it in place." "Well, what are we waiting for? Let's be rid of Mercer for once and for all!" Carmen said, cracking a rare smile. She let go of her control of the storm, letting the clouds disperse and the static fly outwards. Ruby was the next, slowly bringing the vortex to a halt. The moment the air was still enough to act, Schism sent forwards a dark shadow, darker than anything natural. The darkness wrapped around the Emperor. It struggled to break free, snapping a few of the shade tendrils, but it was too much. Moira flew forwards and began to perform a dance before its eyes. It attempted to snap at her with both mouths, but she dodged out of the way. Soon, its eyelids began to droop and it stopped its snapping and thrashing. "Now!" Moira exclaimed. Rhowen sprung into action. "Stand back everyone, I may not be able to control this one as well as I'd like to." And with that, he released all the ice magic within him, letting down the walls he held to keep it inside. He had enough control of it left to direct it towards the emperor. Moira dove out of the way just in time. By the time the beam stopped, the emperor, as well as a large portion of the ground beneath it, was frozen solid. The dragons of Windkeep Tower and the prisoners began to gather around the frozen beast and the dragons who had taken it down. A cheer rose through the air. Rhowen collapsed to the ground and Ruby rushed to his side. "I'm... fine..." He panted. "I just need... to rest for... a loooong time...." "You were amazing! I can see why they wanted you safely locked away!" Ruby laughed. "But we did it! We won the war!" "I guess we did, didn't we?" Rhowen said with a smile. "you've earned your freedom, that's for sure." "Now we just need to deal with him." Ruby said, catching sight of her father flying towards them, slower than usual. Blood was soaking through his bandages and he landed right next to his daughter. "Rubywing!" Quartz gasped. "I don't want to hear it!" Ruby shot back. "We have nothing to say to each other. Not after what you did to Runeclaw! Don't try to deny it was you, I know your magical signature. Leave us in peace before you cause even more trouble." Quartz flinched, and he opened his mouth to respond when Fenn flew up to the gathered dragons. "You all fought well. Now, before any more tempers get lost, why don't we all get our wounds treated." Fenn ordered. "There will be much to discuss later, especially with you, Quartz." The gathered dragons began to disperse, and Rubywing helped Rhowen to his feet. She did not look at her father while she escorted Rhowen to the treatment area. Quartz looked down at the ground, feeling guilt and grief drill down deeper into his very being than he had ever let it before. What was going to become of him? ----- Next ----- @CleverDual @Alwaid @zzzhorses @Skyeset @ScrivenerRook @Kizzan @clarax @lilastar @tigressRising @Disillusionist @Aetherstorm @rainphee @RiaFire11 ----- And here we are! The battle is over and the war is won! There will just be a few more updates to wrap up this arc, to wrap up the last of the lose ends. I hope you all have been enjoying this arc! I know I have, and I'm excited for what is coming next! Also, this past week I've put all the chapters into a word document so I can see how much I've written for The Stories of Windkeep Tower, and as of this update, we've now reached over 76,944 which is the length of Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone! So The Stories of Windkeep Tower is longer than the first Harry Potter book!

Chapter 67: To Dethrone a King

(Warning: as this is still a battle, there will be some violent content in this chapter, as well as some description of injuries)

@Petall

Chapter 53: FINALLY THEY GOT OUT. :D Let's hope they can stay out of Quartz's clutches, at least for long enough that Ruby learns how evil her dad is. It's so good to see Juliette and Thorburn again!

Chapter 54: TuT India oh my GOSH. "It's not about what you deserve, it's about forgiveness, and making the best of the future." is such a good, beautiful quote, and India is the BEST. I'm glad Juliette got out of that life, and I've liked seeing Thorburn's next steps. Everything is going wrong for Quartz, finally. *Insert 'It's what he deserves' gif*

Chapter 55: KULLY'S BUSTED EHEHEH. These two are so dang sweet on each other, my teeth are rotting. I really hope they both make it out of this alive ;w;

Chapter 56: EEEEEEEEE THEY ALL KNOW. I am SO here for sibling stuff. I wonder if this will change Rammus's and Runeclaw's friendship.

Chapter 57: OH MY GOODNESS PENNAR IS BAAAAAACK :'D "I want to show her how much she means to me, because to me, she means more than anyone else. We've done everything together, and when I got sick, she fought to stay by my side. I don't want to leave hers." is such a sweet line, these siblings are the best. Pennar, u are the sweetest brother.

Chapter 58: the jaws of revenge really are closing on Quartz from all sides, aren't they? And, unfortunately, on Windkeep Tower.

Chapter 59: This chapter made me really love Ruby. Her line: "All my life I've been told who I'm supposed to be, but I've never been taught how to be me!" is so well written! I bet if she ever meets India, India will make her feel right at home. I really enjoy reading your 'filler' because it builds up personality and relationships instead of just being mindless jokes and padding.

Chapter 60: NOOOOO PENNAR D': that's so sad. Poor Plagueheart, she just cannot catch a break. Also, that timing system is real nice.

Chapter 61: *excitedly rubs hands together* soon soon soon.

Chapter 62: the windblessing explanation was so cool!! That's some good good lore right there, and seeing Orkeck again was great!! I'm so glad these siblings are together and healing. ;u; *happy cries*

@Petall Niiiiiice! I was so relieved there were no more casualties....Well, maybe with the exception of Quartz' pride. >zing!< xD

Plus I agree with Ruby here; Rhowen is awesome. Funnily enough, I think I'm more excited about the aftermath of the battle. It's always interesting to see how things are cleared up after conflicts!

(I'm curious, who was the Emperor's other head? Was that Imp an actual character at one point, or just an NPC?)

@Kizzan

I'm glad you like that line from India so much!!! Forgiveness is a big theme this arc, so it was fantastic to give her that line!

Oh my goodness Kully and Kyra are honestly one of the sweetest couples I have ever written I am so glad you like them so much!

Sibling stuff is honestly the best! You've probably noticed by now that it's one of my favourite relationships to explore!

Oh it was so much fun bringing Pennar back, even if it was just for a short time! I wanted to give him the ending he deserves!

Oh my goodness I never thought of an India and Ruby interaction! I'll have to see if I can get that in at some point!

Aaaa thank you so much for all your compliments! They mean so much to me! I'm glad you enjoy my writing!

@Disillusionist

Oh, Quartz's pride is definitely a casualty, I love that so much!

I love the closing up of a story after the big intense climax I am so excited to write the aftermath!

The other head was just a random scry. I did think about if any of my past imps would make a good head, but it would make more sense for Daisy Mae to kill or find a random imp, because I didn't have any other imps that were close to Mercer when I had him.

"Just another day and you should be good to go." "Great." Quartz rolled his eyes. Sure, it was great to be doing better, he would like to be able to move without his chest aching from the trident wound, but the moment he was healed, he would have to face his fate. maybe he should just go. He was free from his rivals, he could build a life elsewhere, where no one would know his crimes. Then again, if he did that, he would lose everything here. Not that he deserved anything here. Everyone hated him, and he didn't blame them. Quartz sighed and tried to not pay too much attention to the other dragons in the room. Quartz asked one of the other healers. "Have you heard anything?" The imp changing his bandages didn't say anything and moved on to the next patient as soon as he had finished. Was that a bad sign? It was the first time she had been in his presence in a normal context since her escape. She felt uncomfortable, now knowing how her father had treated her and tried to keep her under his control. That said, he did seem different from the last time she had seen him. Obviously, things had been changing in his life. Fenn entered the room, fluttering to her perch at the head of the room. She exchanged a look with Ruby, an she remembered the queen's promise to her. It would be up to her to determine the fate of Quartz when all this was over, as the clan had failed to provide the protection Ruby needed when she was younger. Fenn said. "You saved us from Daisy Mae's attack, but in the process, Runeclaw was caught up in the blast and was killed. You have his blood on your hands, but since you did not target him, you are being given a trial." Quartz nodded. He shifted his weight, looking more nervous than Ruby had ever seen him. She wondered if it was just his fear of losing everything, or whether there was something more going on in his heart. "We will call forth dragons to testify about your behavior since arriving at this clan." Fenn continued. "Nothing will be hidden from us. In the end, it will be your daughter who decides your fate." Quartz looked away from Fenn, casting his eyes to the floor. Ruby heard Rammus scoff beside her, shaking his head at their father. "First will be Querida." Rubywing's mother stepped into the room. Ruby had not yet had the chance to properly see her mother again, though she had noticed the longing in her eyes whenever they crossed paths. Inwardly, Ruby vowed that she and Querida would have a good long chat sometime very soon. "Quartz has been all I have thought of for the past years. When I was younger and trying to figure out what I wanted out of life, Quartz lured me in with promised of grandeur." Querida began. "I thought if I could partner with him, I could turn his heart and help protect other from harm. It was not as easy as I expected. When I saw how he was treating Ruby, our own daughter, I snapped. I probably would have killed him then and there if it hadn't been for the binding of the hearts. The backfire of that incapacitated me and while I was down, he transported me to his prison, where I was trapped. If you had asked me then, I would have said Quartz was irredeemable and deserves every form of punishment. That said-" Querida sighed, as if it pained her to say what she said next, "The change in Quartz since my return has been phenomenal. It might have been just to save his own skin, but he protected our clan and I feel there is some good in him. We should give him a chance, as we did with Schism. It pains me that I will never get to know my son, but anyone could have been caught up in that blast, it was an accident. It could have easily been me." "Thank you Querida, you may sit for the rest of the trial if you wish." Fenn said, dipping her head. "Next I call forward Kulshan." "Hello, I am Kulshan, some call me Kully, and Quartz took me on as his apprentice. Under contract, he trained me in illusion magic and had me do all his dirty work. It's not like I killed for him or anything!" he added quickly. "But I had to spy for him. He promised me wealth and power, and while I did get that in return, the longer I spent under his control, the harder and harder it was. I want to live my life with Kyra, not with anyone else. I don't want to be under contract with Quartz anymore, and I fear if he stays here, he will break apart my fairy tale." "You fool." Quartz shook his head. "All that contract was was fancy lights and some well placed words. I knew your devotion to your love would be enough to control you. You were free to go whenever." "No Quartz, I am not a fool. I have honour, something you never seemed to learn." Kulshan shot back. "I'm tired of you bashing my dreams and optimism and heart. Life can be a beautiful thing if you let it be. I have my happily ever after, which is better than you can say for yourself after all of this, so who is the fool now?" Quartz reeled back, as though he had been stung. Ruby had never known him to be hurt by the words of others in such a way. She tilted her head in confusion. What was going on? "Thank you Kulshan." Fenn smiled. The ridgeback took his seat near Quartz. "Now, for Thorburn." "I really don't think-" Thorburn protested as Juliette pushed him into the room. "You. Are. Going." Juliette huffed. "Honestly, it's the least you can do." "Um- okay..." The bogsneak looked incredibly nervous. he was fidgeting with a pearl ring on his finger, pulling away his other hand every so often like it was burning him. "Well, you see, I haven't been with Quartz very long... and... well... I-aurRRRGHHHHHHH" There was a roar and a pearly white sheen covered his eyes. He raced towards Quartz, jaws open, and lunged for his neck. Juliette was the first to notice and raced, pulling him down and sitting on him. The bogsneak squirmed beneath her, clawing and snapping at the air. Querida raced forwards. "The ring! I think it has something to do with the ring! Quartz used rings like that!" Querida exclaimed as she dove for his paw. She took it in his hand as he flailed it around. Slowly, she began to work the ring off his finger. It was stubborn and refused to budge, but Querida knew this was the only way to save him. She pulled a small knife from her bag and cut the gem off the ring. It clattered to the floor and Thorburn fell still. "Is he alright?" Fenn asked. Juliette cautiously got off Thorburn. The bogsneak shook his head as if to clear it and got to his feet. The pearly look in his eyes was gone. "Thank you." Thorburn grunted. "Daisy Mae gave me that ring and made me promise to kill him. I guess she made sure I'd follow through. Yeah, I hated working for Quartz, but being enslaved to Daisy Mae was worse. He helped us avoid any mingling with her and I honestly don't know how that balances the scales or anything because to be honest I don't really care about what happens to Quartz anymore but yeah, we dodged a bullet there." Fenn nodded in consideration. "Thank you Thorburn. Juliette, could you escort Thorburn to the medical ward? I think he'll need to be checked over to ensure the charm is completely gone and that his brains haven't been too addled by the experience. Juliette nodded and dragged Thorburn out, leaving the council room silent. "Alright, with that under way, I think we have heard from all of our main witnesses. We were going to call in Rhowen, but he's busy organizing the emperor's transfer to the Fortress of Ends and ensuring it stays frozen solid." Fenn announced. "If you would like to hear more accounts, Ruby, I'm sure that can be arranged, but if you would like to make your decision now, you are more than welcome to." Ruby nodded, and exchanged a look with her brother. She wished Runeclaw could be here too, but he wasn't. She had to do this for him, or for the sake of Windkeep Tower. It was confusing. Quartz had led a horrible life, but it appeared he was growing a conscience or something, otherwise he would not have risked his life in the battle... "If I may-" Querida said, breaking the silence. "This seems to be too overwhelming a decision for one dragon to make. Perhaps she should have some time to think about it, and consult with those who she wishes to." "No." Ruby shook her head. "I've made my decision." Ruby locked eyes with her father. He was shaking ow, probably both from nerves and the shock at being almost killed by Thorburn. Underneath it all, Quartz was just an ordinary dragon. He had made some poor choices, that had led to an even poorer lifestyle. He had hurt other dragons, but he could see that hurt now, and, well, her choice didn't have to dictate her relationship with him. "Quartz, you have many things at your fault, but Runeclaw's death is not one of them." It hurt to bring up Runeclaw, who had been so kind to her when she needed help. Nevertheless, Ruby continued. "I don't think it is up to me to say whether you can stay or go, that is up to you. We are both on a fresh page here, and you have limited my own freedom so much, it doesn't seem right that I should limit yours, not when we are both at the start of fresh new lives." "Thank you." Quartz could see the relief rush through him, all the tension dropping from his posture. "I swear, you won't regret it. I'm giving up my mansion, it is now a part of Windkeep Tower. I will use my remaining wealth to reimburse the prisoners from the time I held them, so they have enough to return to their old lives or start new ones. I've seen where this greed and power brought Mercer and Daisy Mae, and where it could have very easily brought me. I need to figure out where to go from here. Querida, will you help me?" "Quartz, our chapter is over." Querida told him. "We still have our hearts bound, but that is it. I can't guide you and tell you what to do your whole life. I want to make up for lost time with my family. I think you are on a good path and if you need any help, I would be happy to give it to you, but I can no longer be your partner." Quartz nodded. "Fair enough. I have been in control of your life too long." "Quartz, Windkeep Tower thanks you for your donation. You are free to go, and start making amends to those you need to." Fenn told to coatl. The two exchanged nods and Quartz left quickly. "Querida and Rubywing, can I speak to you both?" As the other dragons filed out, Ruby exchanged looks with her mother and approached the queen. She felt a bit nervous. What could Fenn want with her? had she done something wrong? "Rubywing, you did great. You made a very brave choice. Forgiveness is never easy, and not everyone is deserving of it." Fenn commented. "But it is the best way forward for the future. Now that Quartz has bequeathed his mansion to Windkeep Tower, I want you to have it. You are his heir, and you need a place to start your life." "No! Windkeep Tower can have it! I don't need it! Rhowen and I- we don't know if we're staying." Ruby said, shocked. "Well, if you decide to stay, the structure is yours, to do as you wish. You can donate it to the clan, or live in it. It will remain empty until you decide." Fenn said with a smile. "We would be happy to have you amongst our number, but I understand if it is too painful to remain here." Querida gave her daughter a sympathetic look, as if all she wanted to do was give her a big hug but didn't know how to. "I'm sorry I left you on your own for so long. It should never have been like that." "It wasn't your fault." Rubywing said. "You know, despite everything Quartz told me growing up, I wish I grew up to be like you." "Oh honey-" Querida's face filled with emotion. "You are amazing all on your own." "Do you want to go for coffee or something after this?" Rubywing asked. "We need to make up for lost time." "Of course." Querida said with a smile. "Oh! Fenn, sorry! What did you want with me?" "I just wanted to thank you for all you've done for Windkeep Tower." Fenn said with a smile. "If not for you wrangling Quartz, we might have lost more in this battle. You seem to have a way with shaping up others and bringing out the best in others. Quartz may have been the first to wrong Windkeep Tower, but I doubt he will be the last. I am inclined towards kindness and forgiveness and chances beyond counting, but we need someone to hold dragons accountable and decide when they have gone too far. Would you be willing to stand as a judge for Windkeep Tower?" "Fenn, I would be honoured, thank you." Querida smiled. "Then Windkeep Tower will be in good hands." Fenn's eyes glowed with joy. "Now, that is all I had to say to you both, you are welcome to go now." And with that, mother and daughter left to find some place to stop and chat and make up for lost time. ----- Next ----- @CleverDual @Alwaid @zzzhorses @Skyeset @ScrivenerRook @Kizzan @clarax @lilastar @tigressRising @Disillusionist @Aetherstorm @rainphee @RiaFire11 ----- There is one more update left in this arc! As the other dragons filed out, Ruby exchanged looks with her mother and approached the queen.

You are his heir, and you need a place to start your life."

"No!

"We would be happy to have you amongst our number, but I understand if it is too painful to remain here."

Querida gave her daughter a sympathetic look, as if all she wanted to do was give her a big hug but didn't know how to. "I'm sorry I left you on your own for so long. It should never have been like that."

"It wasn't your fault." Rubywing said. "You know, despite everything Quartz told me growing up, I wish I grew up to be like you."

"Oh honey-" Querida's face filled with emotion. "You are amazing all on your own."

"Do you want to go for coffee or something after this?" Rubywing asked. "We need to make up for lost time."

"Of course." Querida said with a smile. "Oh! Fenn, sorry! What did you want with me?"

"I just wanted to thank you for all you've done for Windkeep Tower." Fenn said with a smile. Would you be willing to stand as a judge for Windkeep Tower?"

"Fenn, I would be honoured, thank you." Querida smiled.

"Then Windkeep Tower will be in good hands." Fenn's eyes glowed with joy. "Now, that is all I had to say to you both, you are welcome to go now."

And with that, mother and daughter left to find some place to stop and chat and make up for lost time.

There is one more update left in this arc! We are almost all wrapped up!

Peace and Ishara (the healers) belong to @RiaFire11 and @rainphee respectively. Thank you for letting me cameo them in my lore! Windkeep Tower thanks them for their help healing those who were hurt in the battle!

@Petall That trial was action-packed, but in another way -- sometimes fencing with words is more heart-pounding than fencing with actual swords. With that in mind, I guess it's fitting that Kulshan, as the one with the pointiest nose, got the sharpest words in. XD

Actually breathed a sigh of relief there with Thorburn and his ring. Thought he was gonna have to be like Frodo and get his finger lopped off. That's one more loose end lopped tied off!

Fave line: "Windkeep Tower thanks you for your donation."
You guys got a new mansion! Iiiiiit's PARTY TIIIIIIIME!!

@RiaFire11 Just popping up to say Peace is really beautiful! <3

It was so great to have the chance to have Kulshan stand up for his dreams after always being brushed off and thought of a tool for them! And yes, a pointy nose does help!

I actually toyed with the idea of doing that, because the ring was melded to his finger, but then I realized they could avoid bloodshed by just popping off the stone that held the power.

Party Time indeed! Just you wait for the next chapter!

@Petall I’m so glad Quartz got the trial he deserved. It was about time he faced something for his actions. And Ishara was happy to help!
