Of course, that was always seen as a fairly ambitious dream seeing as he lives in the Viridian Labyrinth, but that never stopped him from dreaming and practicing. He practiced every winter sport that he knew of, making crude skis out of old planks of wood that he found laying around and sliding down dirty hills, annoying his clan mates by brushing rocks around with an old broom, he even found his father's old rollerblades and would roll around practicing skating. As he grew older he started to get disheartened, until one day, the clan's old mage approached him. "You know, I could teach you how to create snow. It wouldn't last more than an hour in this climate, but it's a start until you are able to travel to the real thing." Elruden's face perked up, how had he never thought of that before?! He hastily followed the old man back to his hut, watching intently and taking notes while he spoke. Soon enough he knew all the ingredients he needed to make snow, and so he set off to find them all! Because of his homeland being mostly flat, he ultimately decided the best sport for him would be Cross-country skiing. So he went and found a flat, empty plain, created his snow, and got to practicing. While in the snow however, he discovered he had never felt cold like that before, and so he went looking for a scarf or something to warm him. He found a nice, big, fluffy white Peacebringer's mantle. Perfect, he thought to himself. [item=eternal snow][item=Peacebringer's Mantle]

Once, when he was younger, he wouldn’t have wavered. He would’ve leapt at the chance, the words barely out of Melquist’s mouth before he’d be bounding out the door, yelling a hasty good-bye behind him.

But things changed, as they always did in life. So when Melquist appeared, eyes shining in excitement, words tumbling from his lips, Shade hesitated.

“You think I should— What? Compete?”

“Of course! This is a once in a lifetime chance, and we all know how long you’ve dreamed about this.”

... He never told them that his dream had withered and died a long time ago, that just the thought sent a stab of ice into his heart. There were times when he considered confessing — and wasn’t that an ugly word, as if he were a killer letting all his sins bleed away — but Melquist was always so carefree, so sheltered, that Shade hadn’t had the heart to shatter his illusions.

And maybe some of his thoughts showed, because Melquist faltered, expression falling.

“… You do still want to, right?”

And he looked so confused, so out of his depth that Shade couldn’t bring himself to disagree.

“I do!” he said, forcing a note of cheer into his voice. “It’s just— Wow.” And he laughed, a breathless, shaky laugh. “A lot to take in. Who would’ve thought that I’d get the chance to— ya know, actually do this.” He swallowed, trying to shove aside the rising panic and fear and oh my god he wasn’t ready for this, and said: “When’re we going?”

Melquist, like he always did, swallowed every single lie without question. “As soon as you’re ready!”

A small, bitter part of Shade deep inside him reared its head, words scathing: Azrael would’ve noticed. But Shade was better at ignoring the voice now, and he locked it away, hiding all his hurt and anxiety behind a too-big-smile.

“Great! Let’s go! I can’t wait!”

And maybe, he wouldn’t have to stay the whole time. Maybe, if he was lucky, he just had to pretend until this whole thing was over. Forfeit before it even began.

“—and then after that, we can start your training,” Melquist was saying, stumbling over the words in his excitement.

Shade almost tripped, his mouth moving wordlessly before he managed to choke out, “Training?”

“Well, yeah,” Melquist continued, oblivious as ever. “How’re you planning on winning if you don’t even practice?”

His heart lodged in his throat, a sudden wave of nausea threatening to engulf him. The thought of spending more time on the ice…

He swallowed. “Right. I’ll— I’ll think of something.”

And if that something happened to be a pile of Sizzling Phosphorus… well, it could never be said that Shade wasn’t resourceful.

His old injuries had only become more pronounced with age, and the ache in his hide was nearly constant now. So it had been a tremendous relief when, upon arriving, the cold air had leached into his skin. It had acted like a balm, cooling the old scars until there was only a dull buzz beneath the scales. Crystaline had found himself standing a little straighter. He felt more energized than he'd been in days. And looking at the other dragons at the Carnival, eager to test their prowess and luck, he'd felt -- dare he think it? -- more competitive. Perhaps he'd been competing against himself all along, against the ache that plagued his body. He'd tried many different games: the ring toss, the dunk tank, the shooting range....More often than not, he'd walked away empty-handed. But not always. He couldn't help chuckling to himself as he surveyed his prizes. Mostly cheap trinkets, a few soft toys. Nothing that an engineer like himself could use. Still, they were valuable in another way: They'd shown him that despite his infirmities he could still confront a challenge -- and have fun doing it, too. Besides, they weren't completely useless. There were bound to be hatchlings who'd love something new to play with. Crystaline smiled and patted the toys that lay on the bench beside him. His lairmates would be leaving the Carnival soon; all he had to do now was wait for them. As far as he was concerned, his day was done -- but what a rewarding one it'd been. Walking over a carnival for most of the day was an entirely different kind of exercise that could subjugate even the strongest swimmer. His breath came out in little puffs of steam as he sat down on a bench to have a rest. Big snowflakes tumbled down from the darkening grey sky and the booths at the carnival started to light their lanterns one by one. The colourful lights looked beautiful reflected by the snow and Gamiri enjoyed the view for a few moments. Soon he remembered the bags next to him on the bench. They were filled with lots of merchandise and prizes from festival games. Maybe he had spent too much at the game booths, but those were the best part about the Winter Carnival and Gamiri just couldn't resist trying as many as possible. He grabbed one of the bags and glanced inside. There was the giant fan he won at a Wheel of Fortune and the Mith plushie he got by throwing a ball into a pyramid of cans (good thing he had great aim). Maybe he would give the latter to Asha, as he knew that the Spiral collected those things. Gamiri also saw the pretty little amethyst geode from the string pulling game among the agate from the funny little Duck Pond game. Both would go to Thibi's mineral collection (he needed a birthday present for her anyway). But he took the most pride in the giant fox plushie he had won at the lottery. It took up the entirety of the second bag and didn't even fit into it in its entirety. Call it tacky as much as you want, Gamiri would hold onto this. He just hoped it was waterproof.
