[center][size=6][b]Clan History[/b][/size][/center] [center][img]https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/884244033428414474/1069485096958177280/fieldwatcherdivider.png[/img][/center] [size=5]The Beginning[/size] [i]There was no auspicious omens that heralded the arrival of a dark guardian named Sharp to the Tangled Woods. Together with a few dragons who shared her vision of an orderly city that made the most of the boons freely given by the Shadowbinder to the dragons of the woods. Their first settlement was small and cramped, dug into the soft mud of the Driftwood Drag. Once the mundane tasks of organizing infrastructure and storing resources began many of the initial dragons drifted away, longing for a life with more adventure. Even Sharp's mate Cottonfloss found that he longed to roam, and so he left her behind. Never the less, Sharp's leadership and the safety offered by her burgeoning lair couldn't fail to attract the attention of dragons in the area. Soon she was surrounded by a new group of dragons, many of whom in their own way were fiercely loyal to their new matriarch. [/i] [size=5]The Golden Age[/size] [i]The hard work and dedication of the dragons of clan Theridiidae did not go unnoticed by the deity in the shadows and before long Sharp was granted a space to build not far from the Obscured Crescent. Now with a proper team behind her, Sharp got to work, and built a city like nothing the woods had ever seen. Their claim to fame was their hospitality, and the variety of goods that could be found among the lairs many tunnels and cul-de-sacs. As word spread, more and more dragons flocked from all over Sornieth to make their home in the Tangled Woods and try their luck in the stone halls of the clan. Many of the clan's group distinctions began to form at this point. The dangerbacks, and the concierge family to name just two. Finally Sharp could see what her dream looked like away from the mists of fantasy. A lair, her lair, buzzed and hummed and babbled with the sounds of dragons going about their business at all hours of the day. With the treasure and influence the clan amassed thanks to their trading, they put more effort into drawing in travelers. A great airship was commissioned, the Flying Shadow, in order to make the clan more accessible and to provide entertainment. No one could be blamed for thinking that the Shadowbinder would smile on this lair forever, and that it would grow to be the untarnished jewel of the woods. But the clan's metaphorical day in the sun was about to come to an end. [/i] [size=5]The Hunger[/size] [i]With so many dragons coming and going, it was no surprise that the gathering menace went unnoticed. They seemed normal, perhaps a little gluttonous but nothing else. So the Sable City let them in, there was plenty of food to go around, and there was plenty of space. But these dragons brought with them a virus that infected the hatchlings, and the vulnerable. Within them, the virus grew to a terrible hunger that could never be satisfied. The afflicted dragons fought their urges, but it was not long before the hunger became unmanageable. It affected the mirrors the most, and as soon as one lost control, the scent of blood sparked a frenzy. The skeleton militia and the emergency response teams were unprepared to deal with anything like this. Many fought, many died and the Sable City fell to crumble to weather and time, reclaimed by the forest. [/i] [size=5]The Resettlement[/size] [i]Despite the tragedy suffered by the clan, all was not lost. A surprising number of the permanent residents had been given enough warning to flee before the hunger-maddened dragons had reached them. Others, unable to fly had been loaded aboard the Fantastic Shadow. Once merely a curio, it saved the lives of many. Even these small victories did not come without a cost. Many lost friends, or family. Some survived, scarred by their encounter with injuries that could not be repaired in time. Weary but not defeated, the remaining dragons started to rebuild. Wounds healed and seasons turned but never again would the Sable City stand tall and proud in the woods. Instead, the clan was turning into something different, a ghost of what it once was. Something secret, something hidden. [/i] [size=5]The Silver Age[/size] [i]There is little that can't be accomplished if one manages to get a group of dragons on the same page, or at least reading the same chapter. Sharp knew this well, and she knew that she couldn't rebuild properly without the support of the dragons that had followed her from the ruins and to a new life. Still, everyone had their own ideas of the best way to rebuild. Planning and debates would be meaningless, so Sharp simply led by example. Other dragons in the lair came up with their own ideas to attract money and influence their way. Entertainment instead of innovation became the name of the game. Without their former resources at their disposal the clan could offer precious little else. Momentum grew as letters were sent, and favors were exchanged, but as the clan grew fear began to creep back in. Fear there was more illness that blew in from the plague lands, carried in the stomachs of dragons who would congregate. No consensus could be reached on the correct defensive measures. Arguments sparked and once fruitful relationships turned barren. Sharp, however, had learned patience well, and she waited for an opportunity, and a solution. It wasn't long before both things presented themselves. The first, was a solution. The library researchers in their frenzy to uncover overlooked secrets, found one. Sarazai, a skydancer of particular breeding, pulled the mists down over the lair, obscuring it from any who might wander in by accident. This in turn presented an opportunity. A city that was invite only. Not quite a den of inequity and sin, but enough of a feeling of exclusivity that before long, they were inundated with letters asking for directions and for visitation rights. Many of these were staunchly refused. Once fear has taken root, it's difficult to fully remove. But then, the Shadowbinder provided another opportunity. A strange creature, in the shape of a dragon wandered into the mists. It was a risk to invite the creature who called itself ABYSS. A creature of the hivemind, it was uncertain how much it could be trusted but Sharp was clever, Sharp was patient, and Sharp was willing to strike a deal. So the hive moved into the catacombs beneath the city, an extra layer of protection. A secret to never truly be revealed. And though the mist still cloaks the lair, the dragons there now go about their lives with some semblance of peace and prosperity. The clan is older now, wiser, and though it may never recapture its former grandeur, one thing is for certain. The Sable City will endure as long as its matriarch draws breath. [center][size=6][b]The Dangerbacks[/b][/size][/center] DangerBacks are a peculiar subspecies of ridgeback. With dark or dull coloured bodies and bright yellow markings, the DangerBacks are vivid living warnings. Despite their startling looks they are socially oriented and mildly neurotic dragons. They are most concerned with the safety of others and will take it upon themselves to create and enforce safety measures, wherever they call home. These dragons are rarely seen in large groups of their own kind, with clan Theridiidae hosting the largest population. Due to their particular natures, DangerBacks often do not get along, as the particularities of their companions are likely to get on a dragon's nerves. At most, DangerBacks are found working in teams of two. These dragons tend to have similar safety goals, and while they would not consider themselves a mated pair, they are as close as it's possible for these dragons to get with members of their own subspecies.
