Though the matron of their lineage taught the philosophy of balance and harmony between the two heads of an individual, Stop simply could not find that balance. He felt used as a beast of burden, carting his much more gregarious half around, while his other head, Go, felt that Stop limited his opportunities and activities. In an act of desperation, Stop proposed the pair find a way to change themselves into a dragon with not only one body but one mind. In the end, each mind got its own body forever separating the two and leaving each one cursed. But his plight was not unnoticed by the dragons in the forum where Stop made his home, and one drew him out of his self imposed isolation, encouraging him to converse and share ideas with the many disparate dragons in the local community. Over time these thinkers encouraged Stop to build on his own philosophies and when his first clutch hatched, what had been intellectual speculation and experimentation with others turned into a way of life. Stop was determined that while he could not possibly prepare them to face every situation the world might throw at them, he would give his children the best tools he had so they could find fulfilling lives with some streaks of joy no matter where they found themselves. Despite this they often display characteristics that came to define their progenitor after his split, these include drawing in and soothing troubled dragons, an internal sense of peace around the dead, with relatively resilient and somewhat easy-going personalities that are not overly effected by the negative emotions of others. Rarely are these dragons short-tempered or of fussy and delicate dispositions. Because of these traits many of Stop's line make excellent doctors, funerary experts and conflict migrators though members follow the paths that suit them best even if it is outside these fields. However, each dragon must find their own balance point, that may may require change with time and circumstances, so a good understanding of one's strengths and limitations is a must. While the sanctuary is not overly concerned with concepts such as the highest moral good, it is generally accepted by members that every dragon is deserving of having the opportunity and circumstances that facilitate them finding their own balance point, regardless of whether they follow the sanctuary's teachings or not and that the community of other dragons around them is an integral and valued part of their lives on Sornieth. As a result many members opt for non-violent pursuits that can aid their fellow dragons, however this is not universal by any means. [/columns] [center][img]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/gapy1z7khpzgytp/shadowmid2.png[/img][/center] [center][size=4][b]Philosophies of Balance[/b][/center] [columns][nextcol] Those who delve deeper into the Shadowed Sanctuary teachings find that it acknowledges balance can be found through internal or external means, but generally councils a dragon find a mix of both internal and external balance in their life. Additionally, the sanctuary recognizes two broad paths within each area of balance, though dragons are encouraged to walk the paths that are most useful at any given time. [b][u]Internal[/u][/b] - The balance of mind and body [b]The Balance of Moderation:[/b] Here balance is maintained by never indulging to excess but also in turn restricting very little to oneself. This type of balance tends to come more naturally to dragons of a more even temperament without all-consuming passions. [b]The Balance of Extremes:[/b] Dragons walking this path may restrict themselves from excess pleasures the majority of the time, but this restriction is not permanent. Instead there are regular festival days, personal or otherwise, where the majority of restrictions are lifted and those who wish to indulge themselves to their hearts' content and perhaps beyond. This path tends to be preferred by both dragons who are naturally serious and reserved along with those who have difficulty finding balance without strict rules around some aspects of their lives [b][u]External[/u][/b] - The balance of the individual and the world [b]The Balance of Motion:[/b] A consistent change of the external circumstances, either through location or den improvement. Routines for things such as hygiene or personal balancing routines (such as meditation or journalling) tend to be short, modular and can be done almost anywhere. These sort of balance suits dragons with wanderlust, in highly changeable or chaotic circumstances and those who are easily bored. [b]The Balance of Stillness:[/b] The endeavor to build a stable home or set of circumstances which offers security and provides a solid foundation from which to engage with the rest of life. Routines are often set for the long term, and some dragons walking this path may have regularly repeating weekly or monthly activities. Often when changes are made they are done either with in response to drastic external pressures or with future proofing in mind. This sort of balance tends to draw in those who are homebodies, find comfort in extensive routines or are starting or maintaining families. [/columns] [center][img]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/gapy1z7khpzgytp/shadowmid2.png[/img][/center] [center] [size=4][b]Holidays[/b][/size][/center] [columns][nextcol] In addition to celebrating with wider festivals of Sornieth such as the flight festivals and those hosted by their local communities, many dragons of the Shadowed Sanctuary celebrate the following holidays. Exact holiday traditions and activities vary from dragon to dragon as do the length of the observances. The typical celebration lasts only a day though some dragons may observe them for up to a week. [b]The Silence:[/b] Last day of Flameforger's Festival. A day of quiet introspection, dragons often forgo wearing eye catching outfits and many take the day off work to spend it in solitude or with a small group of their closest fellows. Some dragons go so far as to take a vow of silence, while others simply spend a few hours quietly journaling. It is a time to reflect on oneself and ones environment, reviewing the changes of the past year and evaluating the internal and external balances. For some it is also a time of mourning, and remembering times and fellows lost. At sunset dragons gather together for a communal meal and will often share sombre or reflective stories, poems and performances afterwards. [b]The Sound:[/b] Last day of Trickmurk Circus. The loudest day of the year for many dragons of the sanctuary, it's a day where almost every taboo is lifted. Dragons indulge themselves in food and entertainment, and the offerings are as varied as the whims of the dragons who put them on. This day is celebrated most fervently by those practicing the balance of extremes but even more moderate dragons partake in a game or two. Food is arrayed in a giant buffet that's refreshed throughout the event, often by volunteer chefs eager to try out new recipes or have an excuse to make old favourites. [b]Community Days:[/b] These observances happen throughout the year and are celebrated at different times by different individuals. The intent of community days are to connect dragons with their fellows and wider community, and occasionally to address the needs of the clan. While the main Shadowed Sanctuary branch holds regular community days throughout the year it is not uncommon for them to have impromptu ones for natural disaster clean up or other notable events. When the event does not focus around work that needs doing for the good of the clan, they often focus around highlighting specific groups who contribute to the community, giving gifts of appreciation, and joining in on group activities within the clan outside of an individual's normal activities to foster new connections. Individual sanctuary dragons who do not have the resources to organize a larger community day will often still observe some personal version of the event by working with a new group in the lair or showing appreciation and gift giving to a group they feel is underappreciated.
