DAY TWO
[columns]
[nextcol]Dr. Hazel's red wings folded around her as she peered down at the game pieces Dr. Brusklow was showing her. The game was originally set up in such a way that enchanted predator models would follow players around the board and cause obstacles for them, but playtesting had indicated that hatchlings might find it too frightening.
“Perhaps you can make an adults’ version of the game with all the scary stuff,” mused one of Dr. Hazel’s friends, a scruffy Skydancer simply called Pie. An adventurer and traveler rather than an academic, Pie was the kind of person who was hired to take academics into the field and keep them safe.
Dr. Brusklow chuckled. “The thought has crossed my mind. But I want to get the hatchling version into production sooner rather than later, as my marketing expert has suggested it would be best to release it for the summer.”
A couple of Dr. Brusklow’s seemingly infinite nieces and nephews pattered their way to the table on which the game and its pieces sat. One of them blithely grabbed a piece, unaware of the adults overhead, and started playing with it like it was an action figure.
“Roar!” she said, moving the little wooden jaguar towards her cousin. “Roar! He’s attacking you now!”
“Be careful—" started Dr. Hazel, but Dr. Brusklow waved a hand.
“Eh, it’s alright. These pieces have already seen a lot of action from them. Teera, did you see what this model can do?” The Bogsneak took the jaguar from her and spoke a quiet word over it, and the wooden figure came to life, strutting on his palm and roaring a tiny roar. He set it down on the table. Teera and her cousin narrowed their eyes at it and watched as it started attacking the other, smaller game pieces.
“Why are they scared of the plant models but not the predators?” pondered Dr. Brusklow. Just then, Teera yelped; the jaguar had swiped at her little hand. A moment passed, and then the hatchling burst into a wail. “Okay, okay, let’s get you back to Daddy,” said Dr. Brusklow, scooping up the little dragon and patting her on the back. “Excuse me,” he said to Dr. Hazel.
Dr. Hazel was left with Pie and the Bogsneak’s nephew, who blinked up at her. He turned to Pie and started talking. “I don’t think the jaguar’s scary because I'm older than Teera by two weeks but my last birthday was a birthday party with her too and we had fifty friends over but she took one of my gifts because I got two of ‘em and we had a cake that looked like the Big Tree and—“
“I gotta go help some of my other guests…” said Dr. Hazel.
Pie sighed. “I guess I’ll look after this little one,” he said, and he curled his tail around him as he listened to the child’s rambling story.[nextcol]

Comment (Optional): Amazon river dolphins are gray when they're born, and acquire a pink hue (more prominent in males) as they grow older. They have very small eyes, so it's likely that they use echolocation to navigate and find prey, which includes fish, turtles, and crabs.

Not your usual predator, but still a pretty ferocious animal! A terror in the microscopic world, dragonflies would seem like an enormous monster to a tiny aphid or other small bugs chilling out in the rainforest. They are able to fly backwards, hover in place, turn in tight spots, and accelerate instantly, and each of these abilities helps them catch prey. They only eat prey that they catch while flying, so if a dragonfly has a damaged wing and can't fly, it'll starve. Dragonflies can eat up to 30 mosquitos a day, and larvae will eat tadpoles, small fish, and even each other as well! There are over 5000 species of dragonfly. Dragonfly fossils have been found from the time of the dinosaurs with wingspans of up to 2 feet!

April ducked under another low hanging pine branch as he navigated through the Autumnal Forest. He was on his way to visit Vernal in The Redwoods, but he was beginning to feel a little bit lost amongst the seemingly endless auburn trees. He turned back to check the bag around his waist, as he opened the flap a squeak sounded and a furry head poked out of the satchel "Hey Amber!" April whispered "sorry about putting you in my bag, it's just not safe for you out here. I'm not sure what could be- hey wait!" He cried as the guinea pig leapt from the satchel and ran. The Mirror quickly shifted to infrared vision and began to chase after the fast-disappearing furry shape, he quickly caught up but his claws closed on thin air when Amber ran underneath a thicket.
April dug furiously at the earth beneath the thicket, he couldn't reach Amber and he was beginning to worry something would happen to her. Suddenly he heard a twig snap and a short yip, he swung his head around to locate the source of the noise, infrared vision still active, and saw the outline of a large animal. The creature was about two thirds the size of April, but he was more concerned that it was several times bigger than Amber who seemed to have heard the noise too as she moved deeper into the thicket. The animal padded into view and April recognised it as a lynx that would almost definitely eat Amber! he thought as the lynx stalked closer. It came nearer to the thicket, scenting the air as it began to dig the other side and April prepared to attack it to save his pet. Then it stopped and stared at him, meeting his gaze, April was paralyzed with something akin to admiration and fear and the Lynx dug on. Suddenly Amber shot out from her hiding place and straight into April's talons, he grabbed her before she could run off again. He snuggled the Guinea pig to his cheek and held back a sigh of relief, he looked up again but the lynx had gone leaving only pawprints as a sign it had once been there.
