Welcome to Mistral Meals!
The Mistral Jamboree is always a festival of delights happening in the sunny weather of the Windswept Plateau.
This year it's still a festival.
It's still delightful.
But the sun is nowhere to be seen, with the bulk of this year's events coming to life after it starts to set below the horizon. In its place the sprawling festival grounds are alight with decorated lanterns of all shapes and sizes, strung between brightly colored booths, their occupants promoting their wares and scrumptious smells wafting on the ever present breeze.
However there's one rather noticeable area that is surprisingly dark: The large clearing on the edge of the festival grounds that typically hosts Mistral Meals. The sign-up booth is manned, and there is a string of lanterns leading the way to the pantry tents, but there's no hustle and bustle around the large stone slab that serves as the perpetration area, and no spectators to be seen.
The Wildclaw at the booth perks up and gets to his feet with excitement when he see you approach.

"Welcome to Mistral Meals!" he exclaims happily, in a voice that carries much more than is necessary when you're standing right in front of him. Thankfully he seems to realize it, and gives an awkwardly apologetic expression before dialing the volume back. "Sorry, uh...I've gotten so used to talking to large groups rather than one-on-one."
"So, if you're familiar with our little event, we decided to make it into a bit of a game," he continues, before immediately pausing again, "I mean...it was already a game. It's been a few different kinds of games over the years but now it's a different kind of game, or rather it's still a cooking challenge but there's a new challenge and-"
Realizing he's rambling he gives himself a whap on the wrist with one of his claws. "Get it together, Compote," he mutters to himself before taking a steadying breath.
"Ok, short and sweet. The chefs of Mistral Meals decided they wanted participate in the night market this year, and are running their own separate stalls. Again. So in addition to the daily challenges, we've set up a stamp rally for contestants to try and find them," he gestures at a stack of cards sitting on the booth counter next to him, "For each chef you find and deliver a dish to, they'll give you a stamp on your card. Earn enough stamps and you can win a prize!"
Compote grabs one of the cards and hands it out to you before gesturing at a board hanging from the booth to his other side. "I'll have the day's-...er...night's? challenge ingredients listed up there, and you're welcome to use anything in the pantry tent and the chefs might have some extra ingredients at their stalls as well. But I recommend you don't dawdle! There's a LOT of booths to hunt through, which also means quite a few distractions between here and there."

Welcome to Mistral Meals! This challenge is for all users out there who enjoy food and cooking, whether they have real life skills in the kitchen or not!
More specific details are in the following section, but in general there are two main components to this event:

The Daily Cooking Challenge will provide three Flight Rising food items each day for users to create a dish from. New This Year: Rather than having a designated theme each day, only the ingredients will change! There will instead be different booths for your dragons to visit to address the challenge. Each entry will receive a small prize from me, possibly along with an NPC's remark.

The Raffle will be run after the end of the event. For each day a user participates in the cooking challenge, they will earn one ticket to the raffle, and winners will be chosen once all entries are logged. New this year: If you complete your stamp card, you'll get a bonus ticket!
Note regarding challenge updates: Please check this post in regards to the schedule for the last two days! Challenge updates will occur soon after 4:00FRT, so you have until then to post entries. To accommodate anyone writing their entry last minute, entries will be accepted up to 1 hour after my update post (based on timestamps). However this is just a general rule of thumb, and should anything happen that results in a significant delay to my schedule, I'll address it in an announcement.

You do NOT have to sign up for this event, and can participate in it as often or as infrequently as you would like. The only thing impacted is how many raffle tickets you have in the pool at the end of the week and how full your stamp card gets.

Only one entry per user, per day, and with the exception of the dishwashing booth (more on that below) you cannot visit a booth more than once. Feel free to interact with my dragons or other contestants if you want to keep the RP fun going, but you only get one shot at a daily prize and raffle ticket.

New this year: To help streamline things on the back-end a bit, I will also be requiring contestants to fill out an entry form. As I still have to go through posts one at a time to verify tickets and hand out prizes, I will be able to catch anyone who forgets to do it, but it will be a HUGE help and time saver. You will be able to see a running log of all tickets and stamps accumulated here.

You must use at least one of your dragons in your turn, though you don’t have to use the same one all week.

You are only required to use the three challenge ingredients and indicate which booth you visit. Beyond that you are allowed and encouraged to use other ingredients (whether they exist as in-game items or not). Assume that every potential ingredient and/or cooking device is available for your dragons to use (some of the more advanced gadgetry has been nabbed from Lightning). While not required, you can also earn a bonus raffle ticket if you incorporate the theme of the booth into your entry.

Entries are encouraged to be written as role-play, but I'll also accept recipe format, just so long as it is written in-character/associated with one of your dragons.

There is no word length minimum or maximum, so write whatever is most comfortable for you, as long as the other requirements are met.

New this year: To ensure everyone has a chance to fill out their stamp card even if they miss a day (or more), I'm introducing an option to buy a placeholder stamp via the dishwashing booth. You can obtain as many of these stamps as you want and they will count towards the ticket you can get for filling your card, however they will NOT earn you a daily ticket or prize. Please note that this placeholder stamp is unique to itself and you are not buying one of the main booth stamps!
You do not have to do an rp post in the thread (though you can if you want!), but rather send me a PM telling me which day you missed and include one of the following:
1. 160fps of any food type
2. 8kt/g
3. 4 Messenger Scrolls
[s]Yes, you can technically buy seven of the dishwashing stamps and just get a raffle ticket that way, but where's the fun in that?![/s]

Try not to ping me unless you need to get my attention for a question or any other concern. I don't mind if you do, but I will be working my way through the thread a post at a time to respond to everyone's entries. You can also PM me if you need to reach out for anything.

PLEASE BE PATIENT! I do have a full time job that has a fair amount of goings on this time of year, so that's a pretty significant chunk out of the week I can't dedicate to this event. While I do keep an eye on the thread throughout the day to address any urgent matters, I can only log entries and send out prizes in the evenings during workdays. As always I will get to everyone in order, and if a new challenge is posted and you haven't received a participation prize for your previous entry, don't worry and go ahead and move onto to the new one! Goodies will be handed out in order no matter what challenge is currently active.

Despite not being the one literally running around the entire night market, Compote still looks exhausted when you approach on the last day. But he still drums up an eager grin.
"Have fun? Finding all the stamps?" He asks, before gesturing at the ingredient listings, which is now decorated with colorful chalk drawings of lanterns and confetti. "It's the last day, so its your chance to go all out!"

"These probably aren't the most condusive to baking," he admits, "but if you can find the Cloudsong Confection's booth, Meringue is usualy the one planning all of our celebratory food. If you want to end the week on a bang she might have some ideas!"
Booths
(You do not have to visit each booth in order, or even go to the one that Compote suggests on a given day!)
Breezy Bento
"Don't scarf it all down at once! At least try and savor it for a moment."
While her appearance stands out drastically from her booth, Bloodstone still knows her way around Wind cuisine. Each lunchbox may not be prepared with love, but they are crafted with care and the best locally sourced ingredients!
*There's a sign on the booth that says 'Hatchlings get a free macaron!'*
Light and airy baked goods of all kinds! Whether you have a sweet tooth or prefer something more savory, Meringue has a treat to hit the spot, no matter whether you're dragon, beastclan or some other critter.
Daily Prize: 2 Familiars
The Flaming Kebab Joint
"I have you covered whether you want it lightly seared or well done, but you'll have to find raw at another booth."
The booth may seem like its on fire with all that smoke pouring out, but fear not as Verismo shines behind a grill! Just choose an ingredient (and if you like it on a stick!), and he'll have it hot and fresh for you in a flash!
Daily Prize: Food items totaling at least 50fps
Tender Tidings Tea
"Oh, I know of a feverfew and peppermint blend that will pep you right up! Let me just reach over th-" *CRASH*
Syrah's tea tent has just about any tea you can find in Sornieth, though certainly with a higher concentration of those local to the Windswept Plateau. But for the more adventurous customers, they're free to whip up their own blends right then and there, and Syrah will steep a cup for a taste test to ensure it turns out just right.
Provided the she hasn't upended yet another tray of stock...
Daily Prize: 1 Scene
Marva's Munchies
"Feel free to sample anything in the tent! Except for the cutout. I need to return it at the end of the week..."
Ursus was quite disappointed that April Fools and the Jamboree did not overlap this year, but then quickly got over it and started planning his own fun. There's an eclectic assortment of items and foods for sale at his stall, but can you spot what is edible? That beautifully decorated candlestick could be chocolate, but that scrumptious looking cake could be made of clay. Only one way to find out...
Daily Prize: 3 (edible??) Apparel
Windsinger's Wokbook
"Let me know if you want to swap any books on medical remedies, otherwise let me read in peace."
Tonraq's booth is all but a mini library of cookbooks, herb references, culinary travelogs, out-dated restaurant ratings, and even some already filled in workbooks from culinary schools. Rather than outright selling this hodge-podge collection, he is running on a "take one and leave one" system, so hopefully you brought a book from home to trade!
Daily Prize: 3 Messenger Scrolls

SURPRISE!! Mistral Meals 2025 is open a day early due to some IRL scheduling shenanigans ^_^ "Day 1" will cover the weekend (though I probably won't be able to start handing prizes out until tomorrow), with the regular daily schedule picking up with "Day 2"
Use this time to familiarize yourself with the new format this year! I'm VERY excited about this stamp rally, and I hope both newcomers and regulars alike will be too!
(While I'll be away from my laptop for a while and will not be able to make any major updates, I'll still be able to address any questions if they arise in the meantime!)

Runewing is glad for the opportunity for a bit of culinary creativity! With the Exodus of the clan he's been running on minimal resources and just cooking up the batch meals that come easiest to him. Visiting the festival feels like a well earned break, and as he considers to ingredients on the board, its as if a fog has finally cleared from his mind. The ideas immediately start to bubble away, and he dashes off to get to work.
[Item=Pebble Silkworm][item=Blue Honeycomb][item=Glass Vole]
He chops chunks of crunchy silkworm, frying them in soy sauce before glazing them in the sweet blue honey. The meat is skewered onto kebab sticks before adding the final flourish: melted glass vole pelt, coating it all in a sticky, glossy sheen to trap those flavours.
Runewing makes his taste test, closing his eyes to focus on the flavour and texture.
First there's the warm flavour of the mole pelt which dissolves on the tongue unlocking the explosion of flavour underneath. The sweet and savoury mix, the earthy flavour of the silkworm as a solid base. The outer crunch and the softness inside...
Runewing thinks its pretty prefect as he hands the batch he's made over to Verismo at the Flaming Kebab Joint.

Mistral Meals - Day 1, intro

Not another change-up to the Mistal Meals! Windrith groaned. How were they supposed to perfect a winning strategy if the organizers kept switching things around? He really preferred things to be consistent… But here was Gwentoth with the news. Again.
“You of all people should know it’s not a bad thing to look at a task or problem from different perspectives!” she chided him gently.
He grumbled softly. Just the sort of thing Frinth would be saying, if she hadn’t still been out getting a spa treatment with some of her … friends? associates? before the Jamboree.
“Anyway”, she continued, “as last year’s raffle system demonstrated, we have no shortage of qualified applicants, so if some of them don’t like the new format, we are still sure to have a good pool of contestants to go with the flow.”

Go with the flow, go with the flow… Windrith ruminated
“And,” Gwentoth was still speaking, “they are opening a day early this year, so…”
“WHAT?!” he interrupted. “Why didn’t you say so? We need to get moving RIGHT NOW! I need to get Verdahirifath…” He bustled out without letting her finish. Gwentoth shook her head, bemused. She thought Frinth should have taken him along on her spa outing! The Weyrleader did not know how to relax!
Not another change-up to the Mistal Meals! Windrith groaned. How were they supposed to perfect a winning strategy if the organizers kept switching things around? He really preferred things to be consistent… But here was Gwentoth with the news. Again.

Mistral Meals - Day 1

Aramalath was new to WindSky Weyr, and still not quite believing she was allowed - encouraged, even - to represent them in the Mistral Meals event. She’d had no prior expectations of how the event was “supposed” to run, and so had not hesitated to volunteer, and now her friend Apophalaulath was bubbling over with excitement for her.
“And look! Gwentoth was right! (Well, she usually is!) See how all those booths are already set up? The festival hasn’t officially started, but they look open! And over here, let’s find out what ingredients you’ll be using!”
Aramalath signed in, and considered the three items she’d be required to include. “Don’t forget, I have plenty of cheese, too!” interjected her companion. Aramalath nodded absently, her mind turning, as she looked around. “I think a Bento Box will work,” she said, “Are you going to help?” “Oh, no, no, this is your project!” Apophalaulath exclaimed. “But I could bring you stuff, if you want …”
So Aramalath set her to gathering additional ingredients.
First she set a pot of rice to steam. Then, she prepared an assortment of vegetables that she could pickle quickly, peeling and slicing, and starting them soaking in a vinegary brine with plenty of ginger. Her next step was to mix up a sweet & savory glaze using the Blue Honeycomb, working quickly, as it could be a tricky ingredient. She tossed the Glass Voles into the pot, carefully, and stirred gently until they were well coated, then set them into a slow oven to caramelize. The Pebble Silkworms weren’t a taste she had acquired, but she knew of several dragons who enjoyed them deep-fried, so she mixed up a light batter and dropped them into a pot of hot oil, just until golden. Then she tossed them in sesame seeds while still warm.
The rice was done perfectly. She left it to cool while she looked over the compartmentalized boxes Apophalaulath had brought over. “I’m so glad they planned for this!” she exclaimed! I was worried we’d have to improvise a container, and that just wouldn’t have been right!” She chose one with four squares and dished out her components: rice, vegetables, meat and insects, each to their own section. “You know, some bleu cheese sprinkled over those voles would look nice with the color …" Apophalaulath began. “No!” Aramalath shut her down. “No cheese!” But some other garnish seemed needed. The rice was too plain; she crumbled some nori seaweed over it, and gave an appreciative sniff. “That’s it!” “Are you sure you don’t …” “No! It’s done!” Aramalath thought she’d gotten a good balance of flavors and textures, regretting only the lack of a seafood item. She turned with a smile to the striking figure at the first stall, and presented her offering to be evaluated, unaware of this particular judge’s forbidding reputation. Her thoughts were already shifting to exploring the area before the crowds showed up in force.

Day 1

Melmë is buzzing with excitement, eager to prove their aptitude for sweets. They have watched their clanmates participate over the years, but Melmë never made the cut, which is surprising given they can cook and many of their clan's previous participants certainly could not...
But this is Melmë's year!
Like all Faes, Melmë is an insectivore, but they have cooked for their own clanmates enough to still feel fairly confident. The glass vole is a favourite around Clan Ardanén, and Melmë has a good idea of what to do with it. Their small size allows them to prepare the vole with ease. They use an ominous metal hook (which would not look out of place in the lair of a mad scientist) to drill a small hole in the top of the vole.
[item=Glass Vole]
Crack!
Uh oh. The vole shatters under the Fae's paws. Luckily, there are more supplied by the competition's pantry. Melmë tries again. Their paws are now trembling, which is certainly not helping! But, with great care, they succeed in drilling a small hole in the top of the vole, and scoop the creature's translucent insides out, leaving a hollow shell.
[item=Blue Honeycomb]
Melmë carefully fills this hole with the vivid blue honey. The rodent takes on an interesting turquoise hue, which Melmë thinks is quite pretty. The Fae takes up a blowtorch with great apprehension. The flames come to life suddenly and burn hot, threatening to melt the glass vole, rather than just solidifying the honey. Melmë can barely watch!
They turn off the flamethrower, and not a moment too soon. The vole is whistling like a kettle, and looks a little more melty than it did originally. It almost looks a little sad now...
But Melmë must press on!
[item=Pebble Silkworm]
They look dubiously at the pebble silkworms. Melmë quite likes them, but apparently they are an acquired taste... Melmë reaches for one with paws that are still sticky from the honey. This gives them an idea! They toast the silkworms, and then drizzle them with blue honey, which instantly solidifies against the hot surface.
Melmë plates up their dish proudly, with the vole at the center, and silkworms encircling it. They expect it will be exceptionally sweet, and so decide to share with the Coatl at Cloudsong Confections. Melmë has no idea how to interpret the Coatl's expression, and hopes that Meringue is not put off by the Fae's blank stare. Melmë didn't consider the language barrier when choosing the Coatl, but can only hope she she likes the dish...

Glass Vole
Meat
The satisfying crunch of a Glass Vole makes them a great snack between meals.

Blue Honeycomb
Plant
Coral Carpenter honey solidifies extremely quickly when exposed to warm air. Many crafty dragons will pour the honey into molds as a way of quickly and easily making hard candies.
