Despite the mixed success of last night’s entry, Bones and Garnet hoped to make a more successful tasting dish tonight. They quickly approached the cook house, eager to begin. They entered the building and quickly returned to their workstation. The first thing Bone’s did was open the challenge ingredient bag, reaching in and removing the ingredients: ghost-painted ferns, wetland ghosts and incorporeal dinners. There was also a note explaining a little about each of these ingredients. “What can we make with these?” Garnet asked Bones as she inspected the ingredients and the note. Bones unslung her backpack, unbuckled the top and dug around in it until she found the battered and stained (but mostly intact and readable), “The Joy of Cooking.” It was useful even though some of the cooking concepts were confusing and some of the ingredients were not available in Sornieth. “Let’s take a look and see,” said Bones. Garnet began flipping through the book, while Bones unpacked her knives and Garnet’s spices and herbs as well as her cauldron. “These seem like the types of things that would make a good broth for the bento boxes in Breezy Bento,” said Garnet as she handed a recipe she found to Bones for her thoughts. Bones looked over the recipe and exclaimed, “Oh this looks like it will work. We’re going to make Wetland Ghost Soup based on this Shrimp Shell Broth recipe.” Bones flipped through the index and recipes looking to incorporate the other ingredients. She pointed to a picture in the book called ‘Lady Ferns’. “I think we can boil and sauté the ghost painted ferns and add them to the soup since they kind of look like these Lady Ferns and those are in this recipe.” She continued to flip through the recipes and pictures until she found something that looked like the incorporeal dinner. “I think we can slice up the meat of the incorporeal dinner and put it in the soup as well. It looks like this thing called roasted turkey. While incorporeal dinners do not have much flavor on their own, we can add some vegetables and mushrooms along with the herbs and spices you brought to make it taste better.” They both pored over the recipes and instructions though parts of the pages were missing and part were smudged, discussing how best to proceed and possible substitutions. The ancient text said the ingredients for the main soup were: shrimp shells and tails (wetland ghosts and tiger shrimp shells and tails), onion (wild onion), celery (spinach), garlic (?), lemon (miniature potash peaches and sour green apple vinegar), bouquet garni (bouquet of carnival tulips), peppercorns (ashfall pricklers), water. They would also need oil to sauté the ghost-painted fern fronds. They noticed that no unusual equipment was needed for this project. Garnet quickly went to the equipment shelves and gathered the necessary equipment. She brought all the items to their workstation. From her backpack she also took out her cauldron, stirrer and her wand in its case. Meanwhile, Bones went to the ingredient shelves to gather the additional ingredients. She picked up some wild onion for the required onion (it had the same name so it must be the same thing). They were not sure what celery was but it was green and mild flavored so they chose some spinach because it was green. Neither she nor Garnet knew what garlic was or its flavor profile so they just skipped it. They decided from the context that lemons were a little sour and acidic so they chose some miniature potash peaches and some vinegar made from sour green apples. They were totally stumped as to what a ‘bouquet garni’ was but they knew what a bouquet was, so they decided they would use a bouquet of carnival tulips since they were tasty. They decided that since peppercorns were spicy they would substitute ashfall pricklers. For garnishing the soup they chose some tiger shrimp they would use the shells and tails along with the wetland ghosts in the broth. At the last minute Bones grabbed some mycena mushrooms. She though they would be great to add flavor to the broth and an experience to those who ate them in the soup. Bones said she would take care of the knife work of carving the incorporeal dinner and the fronds of the ghost-painted ferns as well as the other ingredients that need to be sliced or chopped. She suggested that Garnet work on cleaning the wetland ghosts and setting her cauldron to boil and an extra pot to boil the fern fronds once Bones was done chopping them up. Bones warned Garnet that the text said to thoroughly clean the shrimp shells so Garnet should do this with the wetland ghosts and tiger shrimp shells and tails, using plenty of soap and lots of water. Garnet began to boil the water. She washed the wetland ghosts and tiger shrimp shells and tails with soap and water. She was careful to rinse them multiple times, then Garnet threw them into the pot with all the other ingredients that Bones had chopped except the ferns and incorporeal dinner. Both noticed a few bubbles rose in the broth which each hoped the bubbles were just due to boiling water and not soap. Leaving Garnet to watch over the soup and skim any scum, Bones first boiled the chopped fern fronds for a few minutes then scooped them out of the water, drained them and quickly sautéed them for a few minutes with a little oil. She removed them from the pan and then sautéed some of the mushrooms as a garnish. She also set aside chunks of the miniature potash peaches as a garnish. After Garnet skimmed the initial impurities that rose to the top of the soup, Bones added most of the sautéed ferns to the soup. Garnet then lowered the heat and allowed the soup to simmer for an hour. While they waited for the soup to cook, they cleaned their station, with Garnet occasionally checking on the soup and skimming any scum that rose to the top. Once Bones determined that the broth was finished, she used a plunge blender to blend everything together. After tasting it she added in a little sour vinegar and various of Garnet’s herbs and spices to give it more flavor. “That does not look like the picture in the book,” said Garnet noticing that what was supposed to be clear broth was actually murky. Bones shrugged. “They don’t know that,” said Bones as she carefully spooned the broth into individual servings and added slices of incorporeal dinner, miniature potash peach chunks, the mushrooms, 3 tiger shrimps (raw but not alive) and a sprinkling of the sautéed ferns. They then covered the bowls with clear wrap and a quick spell to keep them hot and from spilling. “Perhaps we should taste this first?” suggests Garnet. Bones nodded and unwrapped one of the bowls. Each took a spoonful to taste. “It tastes pretty good!” said Bones and Garnet at the same time in surprise. Then Garnet hiccupped and soap bubbles slowly came out of her nose and mouth. Bones jaw dropped open in astonishment. Then Bones hiccupped and soap bubbles floated out of her mouth and nose too. Bones quickly slapped her foreleg over her mouth in astonishment. More and more hiccups occur for both of them and soon they were festooned in a cloud of soap bubbles. “Can you do something magical to stop this?” Bones pleaded. Garnet pondered for a moment, reached into her store of magical herbs, examining each one then gathered a few together in a bowl and stirred them with her claw tip mumbling something under her breath. She then drew out her wand. She opened each soup bowl and sprinkled a little of the mixed herbs into them. She mumbled a few additional words and drew various shapes with her wand that glowed in the air for a moment before they sunk into the soup. “That should do it,” said Garnet. “Should or actually does fix it,” asked Bones anxiously. “Ye-s-s-s?” said Garnet uncertainly. ”We better check” said Bones worriedly. They each took another sip of soup. Nothing happened. “Great!” said Bones excitedly. “I’ll drop these off with Bloodstone at Breezy Bentos, while you finish cleaning up okay?” she suggested. “You can meet me there when you are done.” Garnet said, “Wait two minutes and we can go together. With a quick incantation and a twirl of her wand she sent the remaining dishes to the sink to wash and dry themselves. They then gathered up the clean and dry dishes and replaced them in the equipment shelving unit. They packed up their personal belongings, and prepared to leave. Just as they were about to leave, each started hiccupping and once again soap bubbles poured from them. However this time the soap bubbles were glowing green. “What should we do?” Bones asked in a near panic. “We don’t have any more ingredients and you can only get one bag of supplies per day!” “Calm down,” said Garnet calmly, “let me think for a moment.” After a few seconds of deep thought she said, “Let’s just go with it and call it ‘Windy Ghost Soup’. They will think we planned it this way. We can disclose the bubbles as a feature. Windies love all that air floaty stuff anyway.” “O-o-okay,” said Bones, “we can try it that way.” They left the Cook House to take their completed items to the Breezy Bento booth. “Here,” they said as they hand the tray of soups to Bloodstone. This is ‘Windy Ghost Soup’. It is made from wetland ghosts, ghost-painted ferns and incorporeal dinners. We added some mycena mushrooms to help with that floaty feeling and added a special ingredient so that when you eat it you can create ghost bubbles.” Bloodstone looked at the soup with interest, unwrapped one of the bowls, took a few sips and waited. Soon a little lady-like burp erupted from her mouth along with a stream of ghostly green bubbles. She laughed delightedly. Bloodstone said excitedly, “For this I can charge double!” Bones and Garnet left the booth to the sound of Bloodstone’s chortlings as she ate the soup and played with the resultant soap bubbles. Soon a crowd gathered clamoring for the soup. “Well,” Bones sighed, “Glad that’s over.” “Yeah,” Garnet agreed, “but there’s always tomorrow.” They laughed and spurted bubbles as they walked off to explore other areas of the Night Market. Ghost-Painted Fern Wetland Ghost Incorporeal Dinner

"Ghost food has GOT to go to Marva," Truffle nodded, a tinge of plea in her voice.

"I have to agree this time," Moss nodded, taking the lead towards the kooky dragon's stall. "Let's see what fun tricks we can come up with."

"Holographic meatloaf," Tippie suggested with a grin.

"Grinding a whole turkey will take too much time. Besides, it's incorporeal, not holographic," Moss chuckled. "I don't know where you got that idea."

"How about a disappearing shrimp cake? Using the ectoplasm from the turkey?"

"And the fern as a garnish, I like it," Tippie agreed, beating her wings to jump ahead of the others. "I'll extract the ectoplasm. I bet you don't know how, but I'm not telling. Old technique in my family."

"That's... an oddly specific family skill...?" Truffle stopped in her tracks, unsettled by the odd Fae.

"She's full of surprises like that," Moss sighed lovingly. "But half the time she's just messing with you. Anyway, let's get started prepping those shrimp!"

Marva's stall was full of strange tools, including a toy oven and novelty shaped waffle irons, thankfully her deep fryer was of the normal variety ("to make obscure fried items with," in her words). Of course, when the group informed her about their idea she just had to add an outlandish suggestion in the form of a shrimp funnel cake to "bring out the silly flavors," which Truffle hesitantly took on as an extra challenge. Tippie mysteriously returned with one less turkey and a bowl of extracted incorporeal essence, which emitted a subtle glow and took on the semi-transparent appearance of whatever was below it. They tucked the anomaly safely away to the side, then began shelling, deveining, and mashing the shrimp.

Mossfeld tossed the ground shellfish with some potato starch, the incorporeal extract, and a special herb and spice blend, then had Tippie preheat the deep fryer and set the glowy shrimp mixture into a piping bag while Truffle picked the freshest-looking sprigs from the fern and rinsed them clean for the garnish.
Vegetable Oil
"Hm. Are we sure about this?" Moss made a face as Truffle's piping bag hovered over the hot oil.

"Not really," she laughed, and squeezed the trail of see-through batter into the fryer.

Before long the cake had turned an almost glassy consistency, the ghostly cyan glow crisping into a sapphire blue. Truffle turned it over between her tongs in wonder. "I guess it's done?"

Tippie came up beside her to give it a look as the Pearlcatcher set it gently onto a plate, the bowl of fern bits clutched in her claws. "Yup, looks good. Now move move, garnish will stick better when the oil is still greasy." Truffle stepped aside and she flitted about the spiral of shrimp, tossing fern leaves here and there until she was satisfied with its presentability.

"The grease is always greasy, that's the joy of fair food," Truffle laughed watching the Fae zip around the plate full of oddity in front of her. "I guess it looks as good as it can for what it is! Nice job, team."

"Great work, Tippie," Moss cheered. "Now, let's go see what Marva has to say about this! I'm just glad she's the one eating it and not us..."

Loctë is a singer, not a cook. And yet, he eagerly volunteered to participate in the Mistral Meals challenge. But now that he is here, he is feeling rather apprehensive.

Incorporeal Dinner

The incorporeal dinner was particularly daunting. Loctë thought that the ghostly blue hue might add an intriguing element to the dish, but it couldn't be the star of the dish (or the taste-tester might just be left feeling hollow inside).

Loctë decided to season it liberally with pepper and salt, and put it in the oven to bake.

Wetland Ghost

The wetland ghosts had recently molted and had an interesting translucence to them. He hoped that grilling them would add a nice smokiness, although he had never attempted grilling before.

He made sure the grill was nice and hot before adding the shrimp. He wasn't quite sure how long to leave them, but when he flipped them carefully with his claws, the undersides were barred darkly with marks from the grill. Perhaps he gave them too long? But he wouldn't want to make anyone sick...

Deciding it would be better to be a little overdone than a little underdone, Loctë made sure they were well and truly done before removing them from the heat. They looked a little dry, perhaps.

Ghost-Painted Fern

The ferns were a beautiful shape and an interesting hue. Loctë added them to the oven with the incorporeal dinner, and pulled both out a minute later. The ferns curled up in the heat and were crisp and crunchy.

The incorporeal dinner had emerged from the oven looking rather dry, so Loctë was glad it wasn't the most important element of the dish. He carved off some of the breast and transferred it to the plate, and added some fern leaves as decoration.

Mahta was quite shocked to be selected to participate in this year's Mistral Meals. The meals shared by the clan's Guards are hardly worthy to share with a guest, let alone at a competition! He is frazzled.

Mahta sees all the booths lining the festivities, and approaches cautiously. Such characters! One Nocturne reads quietly, and he seems to have many books on cooking!

"M-May I?" Mahta tentatively takes one, with the promise to return it shortly!

When Mahta sees the ingredients, he's a little disappointed. No meat?? Many of the Guards subsist on meat alone, and its the only thing he has some prior knowledge in cooking. Oh well, he will have to rely on his cookbook quite heavily then.

He flips through the pages. Roasted vegetables could be one way to utilise the brussels sprouts. He has heard sprouts are quite awful, but perhaps they can blend in amongst other greenery. The recipe calls for salt and various herbs. Mahta does not know how to identify herbs, so can only hope the organisers didn't slip any poisonous plants in amongst the dried herbs. The recipe also suggests some chilli or 'other spices'. He looks dubiously at the flameleg millipede. He decides to take a risk, and roughly chops the millipede (leaving the venomous head aside) and adds it to the tray with his vegetables. He tosses them in oil, salt and herbs, and puts the tray in a stone oven.

Next, is the deep sea lobster. It is apparently quite a delicacy. Compote had mentioned it is good grilled, but Mahta cannot find a recipe that utilises a grill, and worries it may be a little ambitious for a first-timer.

Deep Sea Lobster

There is a seemingly generic lobster recipe, that calls for it to be steamed. Mahta spends some time trying to put together his bamboo steamer before preparing the lobsters. As a warrior and avid meat eater, Mahta claims to have a strong stomach. But somehow, gutting the lobsters makes him rather squeamish.

Soon, the disgusting task is behind him, and he sets them into the steamer, with the water bubbling beneath them. In a saucepan, he heats some butter and garlic as a simple garnish. The roast vegetables are done, he swipes a claw through them and gives it a lick; salty with a bit of kick from the millipede legs. He is not a fan of vegetables, and has no idea if those flavours will pair well, but he must trust the recipe (and his random insect inclusion).

The lobster's blue shells have turned bright red! And the meat is now white, which means they are done, according to the cookbook. Mahta takes them off the heat, and adds them to the plate, still in their shells. He drizzles the butter garnish over the lobsters. He heaps some vegetables next to them. Mahta is practical, the idea of pretty plating seems foreign. But he decides to put one sprig of greenery atop the lobster. Rosemary, he believes, although- again- he does not know his herbs.

He brings his plate to the Nocturne at Windsinger's Wokbook, who allowed him to borrow the cookbook.

"I'm afraid I do not know much about cooking, but your book was very helpful! I hope you enjoy it."

I just want to say that I LOVE Tonraq and wish him all the happiness in the world. His lore is heart-wrenching and intriguing, best of luck to him </3
