Dragons have wings. Whether they're flight capable or not is another conversation to be had, but for the most part it is safe to say that the Windsweapt Plateau has a very healthy population of wings.
And yet somehow both the sky and the ground seems filled with even more winged creatures than usual.
Birds...bugs...Beastclan (the local harpies in particular seemed quite pleased with themselves at being honored guests two years in a row!)...and of course hainu of all sizes (though mostly the smaller, stubbier breeds Wind clans seemed to favor).
There were even some dragons who were taking delight in handing toy wings out to creatures who didn't have their own set (and another set who seemed to just be taping them onto inanimate objects as well?).
Over by the Mistral Meals clearing, there seemed to be a number of volunteer dragons who's sole purpose was to try and keep winged ingredients from flying out of the pantry tents, several even equipped with butterfly nets to help expedite the process (there were notably no Fae included in the lineup...)
The usual hosts however seemed to be MIA...
...that is until a loud yell and a crash was heard from behind the competition area.

"Syrah, be careful!"
"I'm sorry!! You know I don't like sitting still for so long!"
"Well that shot was ruined..."
"We're all in it this time though, aren't we? Can't we just call it done?"
"Hah! You call us all in it with you and Kakigori barely visible?"
"Hmph, you can see me just fine! Look, right there between Verismo's legs!"
"Speaking of...not visible...should Compote be...standing near him...to?"
"Ugh, see? I told you forcing me to stand on a box wouldn't help me stand out more! I can't change the color of my scales and Verismo is just...so....big."
"But I even labeled it for you!"
"I think that just makes it even more mortifying..."
"Shut it!" A harsh voice suddenly hisses. "We only have a few hours left until this year's Mistral Meals starts. I know none of you have been here for every single one, but I would very much like you to behave long enough to just take one. Single. Photo. to celebrate the tenth."
"......Yes chef," seven other voices chorus in unison, with varrying degrees of enthusiasum.
"I think that's Bloodstone's way of showing sentimet for her pet project," someone whispered, followed by what sounded like a metal object being thrown.

Welcome to Mistral Meals! This challenge is for all users out there who enjoy food and cooking, whether they have real life skills in the kitchen or not!
To celebrate the tenth(??!! Seriously?? My brain still doesn't beleive it despite counting it out MULTIPLE times over the past month including again as I type this!) Mistral Meals event, the chefs of Wayfarer's Rest have decided to go back to their roots, and will be returning to the original design of a new cooking challenge every day. For those of who who are long term participatns you still might want to skim the rules as there's been some minor tweaks since I last did it this way! The tournament style will likely return next year, though it all depends on how real life is treating me by then!
More specific details are in the following section, but in general there are two main components to this event:

The Daily Cooking Challenge will provide four Flight Rising food items each day for users to create a dish from. Unlike past years there will not be a RNG to determine how well your dragon did, so it's entirely on you if you want it to be a sucess for failure (just don't go claiming you won first place in anything, as it's not that sort of event!). Each entry will receive a "goodie bag" from me, possibly along with an NPC's remark.

The Raffle will be run after the end of the event. For each day a user participates in the cooking challenge, they will earn one ticket to the raffle, and winners will be chosen once all entries are logged.
Note regarding challenge updates: Challenge updates will occur soon after 4:00FRT, so you have until then to post entries. To accomodate anyone writing their entry last minute, entries will be accepted up to 1 hour after my update post (based on timestamps). However this is just a general rule of thumb, and should anything happen that results in a signficiant delay to my schedule, I'll address it in an announcment.

You do NOT have to sign up for this event, and can participate in it as often or as infrequently as you would like. The only thing impacted is how many raffle tickets you have in the pool at the end of the week.

Only one entry per user, per day. Feel free to interact with my dragons or other contestants if you want to keep the RP fun going, but you only get one shot at a daily prize and raffle ticket.

You must use at least one of your dragons in your turn, though you don’t have to use the same one all week.

You are only required to use three out of four of the challenge ingredients. Beyond that you are allowed and encouraged to use other ingredients (whether they exist as in-game items or not). Assume that every potential ingredient and/or cooking device is available for your dragons to use (some of the more advanced gadgetry has been nabbed from Lightning).

Entries are encouraged to be written as role-play, but I'll also accept recipe format, just so long as it is written in-character/associated with one of your dragons.

Technically there is no word length minimum or maximum. Write whatever is most comfortable for you, so long as the two requirements (required ingredients are used and entries are associated with one of your dragons) are met.

Try not to ping me unless you need to get my attention for a question or any other concern. I don't mind if you do, but I will be working my way through the thread a post at a time to record everyone's entries. You can also feel free to PM me if you need to reach out for anything.

PLEASE BE PATIENT! I do have a full time job that has a fair amount of goings on this time of year, so that's a pretty significant chunk out of the week I can't dedicate to this event. While I do keep an eye on the thread throughout the course of the day, I can only log entires and send out prizes in the evenings M-F. As always I will get to everyone in order, and if a new challenge is posted and you haven't received a participation prize for your previous entry, don't worry and go ahead and reply to the new one! Goodies will be handed out in order no matter what challenge is currently active.

On the last day of the Jamboree, Compote was in discussion with an icey looking skydancer when participants started to show up.
"I'm being absolutely genuine here, Kakigori. With your round getting scheduled last and how Tonraq acted earlier, I was worried you might not even show up."

Kakigori ruffles her feathers, a bit miffed. "Don't get me wrong; I will be leaving at the end of the day as I have contracts to follow up on before clans start leaving the festival grounds, but unlike Tonraq I do have an appreciation for the culinary arts and would like to see what comes out of this."
They wait patiently for more participants to show up, and then Kakigori steps forward to announce her round.
"Part of my job is to source quality ingredients for the chefs at Wayfarer's Rest," she starts, but then gets a rather smug look on her face, "And I happen to beleive I'm quite good at it."
"However, there are ingredients out there that are tricky to get a hold of, not because they're rare or hard to find, but because a great amount of effort is needed to aquire them, and that can drive up the price or contribute to the idea that they're a delicacy."
"So for this round, I've selected four ingredients that dragons don't typicaly use in everyday fare. They're either splurging to impress or want to celebrate sourcing the items themselves."
Use at least THREE of the following ingredients in your entry:

[item=Lion's Mane Emu][item=Winged Barb][item=Swordfish][item=Speckled Fire Lily]
Lion’s Mane Emu / Winged Barb / Swordfish / Speckled Fire Lily

Compote can't be happier. Even if Kakigori tends to be one of the pricklier dragons he works with, it's a nice, reasonable end to this year's Mistral Meals.
Or at least he thinks so until he realizes that Kakigori is staring at something on the ingredients table. She reaches out a claw and picks up what looks like a large egg. "Did someone leave this behind from the last round?"
The wildclaw walks over to take a look, tilting his head. "It looks like an emu egg..."
"Yes, and I have emu on the menu, but not their eggs."
Compote has a sinking feeling, but he reaches out the egg and taps it against the edge of the table.
It cracks in half along a pre-existing seperation that had been expertly hidden, and there's a burst of confetti that sprays in the hosts' unamused faces, along with a small note:
Sorry Compote, I wasn't being truthful yesterday.
Forgive me? :(
Even if Marva won't be visiting I still wanted to spread some fun.
I've hidden some eggs of all colors and sizes around the kitchen.
If the contestants find them, there may be a surprise inside!
".....At least this isn't the worst prank Urus has played?" Compote asks while Kakigori sighs.
If you reference finding one of Ursus' surprise eggs in your post and mention what your dragon(s) finds inside, you'll get an extra raffle ticket!

While not officialy a chef, Compote spent much of his time in the kitchen caverns as a hatchling watching the adult dragons work, and ended up with a fairly diverse pallette and eye for technique as a result (though the best he can make himself is a fancy club sandwich). After having the job of MC'ing Mistral Meals dropped on his lap without warning, he's taken to making some personal adjustments, though doesn't mind at all handing control back when asked.

Bloodstone is the head chef at Wayfarer's Rest and was the main organizer of Mistral Meals for the first six years of its existance before [s]dumping it on[/s] handing the torch to Compote. She's well versed in quite a few disciplines, but Plague cuisine is her specialty (despite being a Lightning dragon living in Wind Flight...no one's ever been able to figure that interest out). She has mellowed out a fair amount over the years, but it's still never a good idea to push her buttons.

Meringue is the sous-chef and resident baker. She's very quiet, but this has less to do with being standoffish or shy and more to do with she doesn't have a fluent grasp of non-coatl languages. Hatchlings know to go to her to sneak snacks before dinner as she finds it impossible to say no to them. Best friends with Ursus, thoughs he'll give a deadpan stare to anyone who implies she can keep him in check.

The first dragon to "invade" Bloodstone's kitchens, Syrah has found her niche as a vintner (she's good at other drinks besides wine but she likes the sound of this title better). However she's unofficially banned from the kitchen caverns due to her clumsiness, so she has set up her own little workspace adjacent to the clan's greenhouses.

Ursus earned his place in the Wayfarer's Rest kitchens by being an expert chocolatier. This is probably his only saving grace with Bloodstone as he's also quite a bit of a prankster and joker while on duty (though being BFFs with the sous chef doesn't hurt). He's got more than a small obsession with honey and tries to find any excuse to use it in his creations (which has become easier than ever with his son taking up the mantle of beekeeping in the clan).

Verismo caused a stir at Wayfarer's Rest by catching Bloodstone's attention and later becoming her mate. His co-workers like to joke that this is only because he prepares her favorite food (mussels) better than she does. To their credit, he does excel with preparing seafood, especially on the grill. An extreamly laid back individual, he often finds himself in the role of mediator between coworkers during their squabbles.

While according to clan logs Tonraq a member of the kitchen crew, he'd deny it vehmently if you asked. Mistral Meals 2024 is officialy up and running! Giving everyone a bit of a head start so I can sleep in tomorrow, so come and celebrate and be careful when picking up your kitchen equipment! Some overzealous dragons have been slapping on where they don't typicaly belong...

Mistral Meals - Day 1
Felnyr stumbled into the cooking area, somewhat disoriented, curious about the collection of tents bursting with food of all sorts, impressed by the crowd and the sights, but nevertheless quite confused: Why was he here again? There had to be a reason... probably. He just didn't quite remember what it was yet.
A peek at some of the table settings triggered an inkling within his memory. Ah, yes - wings! He'd heard that the general public could come here to assemble some contraptions with wings. Most intriguing. He'd had a phase earlier in life where he'd attempted to adorn all attire and garb that had any relation to wings. ...He'd outgrown that phase. Mostly. But still! Perhaps a concept worth revisiting. Well, not quite revisiting, he supposed; he needed to dress something edible, not himself... right? Though... perhaps there was merit in the latter thought.
The Fae gathered some ingredients at random and wandered off to one of the empty tables to examine his loot.
[item=Sublime Peacock][item=Blue Fly][item=Deep Sea Lobster][item=Horn of Plenty]
A vibrant peacock, still with its feathers; a fly - he just barely resisted snacking upon it -; a rather armored lobster; and a wicker horn overflowing with any sort of fruit and vegetable imaginable. How quaint.
Felnyr plucked every feather from the bird, which looked far less elegant without its decorative cover and down. It couldn't be helped; to assemble wings, he needed, well, wing components. Now, where did he place that glue...? Glue, glue... To Felnyr's horror, he realized that he'd forgotten to bring his handy dandy pack of tools! The Fae hurled his crests in a gesture of almost-panic before an idea struck him.
Felnyr began to skin the bird, separating the bones, insides, and oily skin into a haphazard pile. The meat... what could that be used for? He decided to ignore the bird flesh. Waving his crests merrily, he tossed all of the other peacock parts into a pot to boil, pleased as he watched the materials hydrolize and break down gradually. Whoever claimed that a watched pot doesn't boil was probably misguided. His watched pot was boiling very well indeed.
When the bird bits had taken his desired form, he scooped the gelatinous mass out into a container and allowed it to cool. Now, how could he best utilize the other things for his creation?
Felnyr spotted some broad leaves in his Horn of Plenty, as well as some attractive stalks hosting leaves that spread radially in a fan shape. Ah, yes, those would do! He placed the large, broad leaves flat on the table, then laid two fan-like stalks diagonally side by side, facing each one in opposite directions. These made quite an appealing wing-shaped base.
The bird glue had cooled sufficiently, so Felnyr spread it across each thin, sharp leaf. Then he carefully arranged the feathers upon the base and attached the brilliant blue fly. He examined the result. Hm, not bad, but it was missing something.
Felnyr took a look at his final ingredient, a lobster with an extremely tough but beautiful blue shell. Well, he shouldn't allow that to go to waste, should he? He took a look around the area and spotted a crushing machine that would do quite nicely.
With absolutely no hesitation, the Fae tossed the deep-dwelling delicacy into the machine and collected the crushed bits of shell that came out... along with some mushy sea-scented flesh. He considered the flesh for a moment, but as he was unsure about what to do with it, he placed it gingerly upon the bird flesh that he'd set aside earlier. That was probably for the best. Now neither chunk of mangled flesh would be lonely.
Felnyr sprinkled the colorful crushed shell onto his leaf-feather mass, nodding, satisfied, as the pieces took to the glue and shone in the sun. The bird-lobster flesh lump had begun to smell a bit, but Felnyr paid it no mind. He continued to admire his wingful work. Marvelous! Fashionable!
Felnyr had a vague suspicion that he'd forgotten something important, but it was a lovely day and he was quite pleased right now, so he decided not to worry about it.

Zolin looked around the venue, a bit of a sneer on her face. She didn't know why she had been sent, of all dragons. That other one, that made sense - she was so obsessed with her tea, she must've been interested in other cooking. But herself? She had a sneaking suspicion that, due to her age, she was being viewed as some sort of... motherly or grandmotherly figure. She scoffed to herself. All of her finery had not been won by kindness and goodwill.
But, alas, here she was. May as well try for a decent showing, support the clan, all that. Not that the heads of the clan much cared about prestige, but she had a reputation to uphold.
She looked at the list of necessary ingredients and smiled to herself. Fortunately, nearly all of them were good, live ingredients. That was something, at least. While others of her kind enjoyed plants, she had always preferred meat - a trait that she and the clan matriarch had been able to bond over. She could work with these - though what to make still eluded her. Particularly since it seemed that presentation would matter in this competition.
Oh, what was that joke that others always made, about what the Plaguebringer was making in her great vat? Ah, that was right - soup. So that was simple, then - a triple protein soup, with the peacock as a base and meat, lobster meat, and flies to garnish and add a bit of extra crunch.
She waved to the Wildclaw, a loudmouth in her opinion. Once he was nearby, she briskly told him what she'd need. "I'll be needing cream, milk, butter, and flour. Nothing else."
While he busied himself fetching that, she worked on preparing what she did have - killing, plucking, and gutting the peacock. She was only halfway done when her other requested ingredients arrived, but that was fine - they'd be ready later. All that done, she started the peacock on to boil for a base broth.
After an hour or so, she grew tired of waiting on the broth, despite the book she'd brought to read. It was fine if the broth was a bit weak, she argued to herself - there would be other meats to flavor it. She stood again, moving to another necessary step while the broth got a bit more time in - killing and cracking open the lobster for its meat. She took the peacock broth off of the heat, then, and after it cooled she quickly removed the peacock meat, skinned it, deboned it, and chopped it into more manageable pieces for the stew. Then a new pot was started, first melting butter, then adding the flour, milk and broth. After a few minutes, allowing everything to warm and thicken, she added the peacock and lobster meats, allowing again for it to cook and thicken further. Finally, she added a bit of cream to enrich the flavor, allowing it to warm for a moment before pulling it all off the heat. She turned tot eh jar full of flies she'd been given and shook it, stunning the insects before pouring in broth to drown them. After they all stopped moving, she poured the jar into the soup pot, stirring them so that they were evenly dispersed.
She poured her stew into the bowls provided, then looked at her creation. Well, it certainly smelled good. But the presentation perhaps needed something. She looked to the jar of flies, and found a few hadn't made it into the stew. She dabbed a bit of butter on the wide rims of each of the bowls, then stuck 5 flies in it in a spiral. There, now it's even festive, she thought to herself, quite pleased, before bringing them over to the judge's table.

Leonidas wandered around the venue where many dragons were already cooking with enthusiasm. It seemed interesting maybe he should give it a try too? The blacksmith had a sweet tooth and liked to bake. Even though he wasn't used to prepare dishes, a challenge sounded fun. He carried a few of the proposed ingredients and settled at a vacant table.

Leonidas pondered for a moment before starting to slice and dice the vegetables. The horn was filled to the brim with various vegetables, including his favourite. Of course he had picked a few extra bell peppers, Leonidas was very fond of their sweet taste.
After crushing part of the vegetables to a oreangeish puree, he took a pan and fried the sliced ones, seasoning them and adding it to the puree after he finished.
Leonidas grinned, looking good so far! His smile disappeared straight away when he glanced at the others ingredients. The peacock was trying, not so discreetly, to run away from him.
"As if I'd let you escape!"
He inhaled deeply and breathed a powerful stream of flames on the poor bird, burning it to a crisp. Maybe breathing fire wasn't the best idea. Anyway, nobody saw that. Probably.
Leonidas abandoned the idea to use it in his dish, it wasn't salvageable. At least, there were still the lobsters. He took a ustensil to shell them with more ease and added the cut, delicate meat in the pot to let it boil with the vegetables.
While his dish was slowly cooking on low heat, He examined what remained of the peacock. The once majestic golden bird was now charred, almost unrecognizable. Leonidas gathered a few feathers the peacock dropped on the table before its escape attempt and displayed it on the border of a plate along with some sliced vegetables.
After a long wait, he poured the preparation in a bowl and deposed it on the plate. Leonidas added a few finely sliced peppers to decorate the dish, forming a spiraling pattern with the vegetables.
He looked at his dish, content, and took a piece of the peacock to nibble on it.
Bitter, but so crunchy.

The pale skydancer listened closely to the hosts' speech, and when her turn came up she eagerly approached and inspected the variety of fodder before her. A colorful peacock, a massive blue lobster, a cone of vegetables, and a blue fly? These particular ingredients reminded her of a dish she made for her husband many times before - minus the fly.
"Duh, this is obviously meant to make my signature recipe, surf-and-turf!" she smugly proclaimed.
The peacock's head fit snugly in her sharp Skydancer claws and she proceeded to pop it off the rest of its body like one of her dolls. After pulling out its insides and setting those aside, she repeated the popping movement with its legs. Then, she carefully plucked each and every one of its tail feathers to save for later. She blew on the remaining poultry slabs with wind magic to "shave" all of its feathers off. The breast still had plenty of rib bones, so she went about plucking each rib one by one. This process took a while.

But something about this was off... The dish was still missing more meat. Fortunately, Sky had another trick up her sleeve: Rummaging around in her bag, she pulled out a dismembered leg of some creature her mate brought back from the hunt, and proceeded to skin it and shred its meat with her bare claws, neatly placing it on a pile next to the shredded peacock breast.

A gourmet chef like herself always comes prepared, so she got out few handfuls of her special seasoning and poured it all over the pile of meat and poultry. Once all the meat was shredded and seasoned, she dumped it into a pot over some charcoal and set the charcoal on fire by striking it with flint. The peacock's heart, liver, and innards were mashed by a thousand scratches into a puree to use as a sauce to keep the shredded meat moist as it cooked.

All that was left was the lobster, who was staring at her with those cold, beady eyes. Well, there was no more time left to waste, so she immediately chucked it into a pot of boiling water and closed it.

Once everything was done cooking, she drained the pots and attentively assembled her dish. Shreds of peacock and haunch meat in its hearty red sauce arranged tastefully into the shape of a wind sigil. [emoji=wind rune size=1] The lobster was neatly nestled against it, and Sky stabbed it in its hard shell to crack it open.
Finally, she adorned her delectable plate of shredded meat and lobster with peacock tail feathers and the sparkly blue fly that was offered to her, as a cute decorative touch. It took all the impulse control in Sornieth for her to not gobble the sweet little fly up.

There it is: a surf-and-turf that most dragons can enjoy. As for the horn of plenty? She hid it in the same bag she brought a stomper haunch in. This harvest could feed her many children back home, who cannot tolerate meat or mollusks.

Another year, another MistJAM! Everyone was excited for the tenth Mistral Meals.
It would be this clan’s third year competing; dubbed Team Strinjale, the group collectively had made it to the finals and been out first. Upon hearing that this year will be low stakes and will have no eliminations, everyone breathed a sigh of relief happy for this year’s main representative.

Little Mochi is making her big debut!
Almost an year old, the clan leaders decided this would be a great birthday experience for Mochi. There is nothing the little Aether loves more than playing with food and having fun.
Well, Mochi is obsessed with space travel, but no one in the clan knows anything about that, so Mistral Meals it is! Some former members of Team Strinjale are standing by, to help Mochi with anything complicated. Other than that this will all be up to Mochi.

This meant she could not show mercy to the other ingredients. Meanwhile she stood on Stroh’s head and supervised as the Tundra prepared all the vegetables from the Horn of Plenty.
Pleased with their performance, she then directed them to mix up a pie dough, while she added copious amounts of [gamedb item=51956]. It’s one of Mochi’s favourite things to eat!
Doing her best, Mochi then adorably transferred the pie dough to the pie pan and then poured all the ingredients in: first the entire lobster, still whole (the shell will add a nice surprising crunch!), then she covered the lobster with a mix of chopped vegetables, pieces of the Sublime Peacock without the bones and feathers and a bit more Butter Sticks.
Finally into the oven and baked until ready:
