Leafstep stretched and yawned. From her perch on Myrdin's back, she could see that the maze had once again drastically changed shape. She tapped his head. "I think we're ready," she said.
Myrdin blinked, yawned, and then carefully stood, shaking two repentant and rather cramped hatchlings out of his wings. "Are you going to behave today?" he asked sternly. "Or do I have to fly you out of here back to the nursery?"
They shook their heads solemnly. "We'll be good," the female said.
Leafstep smiled at them. "Come on, we're almost to the Behemoth, see?"
Today, with the hatchlings well-behaved, they had the time to stop and look around at the differences. The Shrieking Wilds were much darker and more tangled than the other regions they had explored previously. Although the maze creators had done their best to clear neat paths, the rampant Nature energy and rapid growth meant that Leafstep was constantly fluttering over and around vines, and the larger Ridgebacks were sometimes tangled comically.
Leafstep was just extricating one of the hatchlings from a knotted vine when they heard a savage hiss.
"Look out!" Myrdin called, shoving the other hatchling behind him. "It's an Amphithere!"
The Amphithere was not friendly. It swelled out and prepared to attack. Leafstep and Myrdin readied their Nature magic, trying to corral the unruly vines and use them to tie it up, but it wasn't working. Suddenly the male hatchling snapped at the Amphithere, and rather to his surprise caught it just behind the head. It struggled, and then went limp, eyes flashing in useless rage.
The hatchling gave his parents a pleading, what-do-I-do-now look. The female hatchling came over and shook a claw in the Amphithere's face. "See where that temper got you? Aren't you sorry for it now?"
The Amphithere wilted. She nodded to her brother, who dropped it with a sigh of relief and began rubbing his sore mouth.
"If you promise to behave, you can come along with us."
It brightened, fluttered its wings, and flew up to curl around her neck. She let out a startled yelp, and then smiled. "I guess I've got a new friend."
"I guess you have," Myrdin smiled. "I'm proud of both of you."
