Hop, hop, flutter, flutter. Liege's head tilted as Alkonosts paced and circled, chattering and squeaking as much to himself as the birds perched upon his bright plumage. The four budgies swayed with the movement, little claws attached firmly (but harmlessly) to the very ends. A spot of green marked the wayward percher who had inadvertently set these events in motion, crouched cozy in the crook of the dragon's wing-and-forearm shoulders.
Because Alkonosts [i]was[/i] a dragon, wasn't he? And therein lay the roots of the crowned roc's student's dilemma.

"Dragons. What do dragons like? Other than poems, we all like poems. I know [i]that[/i]. But how do I get them to show up? Invitations? Do we need invitations? It's a party! And a contest? Contests don't usually have invitations, do they? Oh, I don't remember, but I think they kind of do. Isn't that kind of boring though? And what if that isn't how dragons do things? Maybe if we have party favors?" He twisted his head to peer at the five birds expectantly. What are some good party favors, you think?"

Dizzy teetered back and forth,. "...Rocks?"
"That's a terrible idea," Flaps chittered.

"Isn't this supposed to be a poetry contest?" Liege rumbled. Immediately the other three piped back up to rag upon their fourth, who chirp-snapped back, filling the air with chaos. The plump little percher ruffled her feathers and coughed, lightly.
"I think," Verdy said, "most dragons like to eat..."
"[i]SNACKS![/i]" Alknosts snapped his fingers and hopped excitedly, sending the five squawking and clinging. "That's PERFECT! Contest! With snacks! Now we just need paper and that's easy, and ink, we have lots! Between you and me to make sure nobody fights-- right, Liege?-- and everyone else back home to help plan, it'll go great!"
"W-wait!" Verdy beeped, alarmed, wings flapping as she tried not to fall off. "Wait, shouldn't you find someone? More someones to help?"
The skydancer skidded to a stop and twisted to look at the bird. "What for? The Harpy flock said they would."
"But dragons! Shouldn't you get dragons' help? This is for them! They'd know what to do!"
All seven of the feathered creatures paused.
"...yeah, that's a good idea," Liege said.
Alknosts head tilted the other way. "A good idea? Yeah, I guess so! But dragons, where do we find dragons? It was a surprise we saw them while we were looking around with you, Verdy. Dragons! Where do they hang out? I was going to ask everyone to shout until someone showed up!"
[columns][color=#13420c]"That's a terrible idea," the four budgies chorused.
"Besides, we still need a snack pick," Buzzy reminded them.
Dizzy and Flaps let out a string of chirps, notes scaling up and down in sharp staccato as they spread their wings and began to flutter-flap above and around them all. Up, down, around and chirp. Alknosts fell still for a moment, watching, even as his other bird friends chirped and flapped too. Then quietly, he pulled out his cornet and trilled along, bright and ringing.
For a moment, naught but birdsong and their little horn filled the air, and with the sound the argument and tension slowly began to seep away.[nextcol][img]https://i.imgur.com/LGtjFer.png[/img][/columns][color=#13420c]
Finally, the budgies alighted once more with a pleased sigh. "Good song," Ziggy squawked.

"Then we find a friend and go from there," Alknosts said, resolute. "Lets go, lets go, lets go!! We won't find anything if we stand here! Where should we start. East? West? On the ridge? Near the cliffs, the water??"
"What about over there?" Buzzy waved one wing past a patch of wiry shrubbery. "I think I saw something over there."
"Wait, really?" Verdy blinked. "Really really?"
"Really really!"

That was all Alknosts needed. Like a shot, the dragon-bird zoomed off, the birds perched upon him only barely managing to keep their spots as he bounded. The crowned roc quickly hopped after him, footsteps loud and crunching against the ground. Sure enough, further still past the shrubs and down a cliff, actually, but nonetheless nearby, a harpy flapped along, accompanied by a tiny leather-winged creature.
"Hey!" Alknosts called. "Hey, hello, you down there, are you a dragon? Do you like poetry?"
[columns][color=#13420c]Both travellers jerked, surprised, looking around for the source of the voice. The frilled one tilted her head and blinked at them with large eyes, glancing to the harpy every so often. He looked at her, then back up at them.
"Uh... yes?" he called back. "To both."[nextcol] [img]https://i.imgur.com/pgfCq3g.png[/img][/columns][color=#13420c]
Ohhh, Alknosts could just explode with excitement. Without delay he glided down, hopping eagerly towards them with chirps in the back of his throat. "Perfect, perfect, perfect! Won't you listen, won't you hear me out? I've not met another dragon before and I want to change that!! Please?"
The duo exchanged another look, but this time the little dragon nodded. And so Alknosts launched into his pitch, laying out his plans-- his upbringing, little lost Verdy, the Harpy flock and the dragons and finding out what he was. They seemed skeptical at first, but it faded into confusion, followed by realization, and then a quiet little excitement as the skydancer circled about to the core of the topic, the poetry contest. By the time he finished, both had begun to nod again, slow and thoughtful.

The dragon leaned over, her green draped pink fins flaring. "We know some people who'd like it," she whispered.
"And you could probably use golden milkweed if you need snack favors still," the harpy suggested. "Dragons eat those, too."
"That's my favorite snack!!! [i]AWESOME![/i]" The skydancer danced. "Then what in the world are we waiting for? Come on, come on, lets go get my flock and find our things, I know just where this can be. We've got a contest to put on!"

Peregrina is a shy little pearl of a dragon who loves the magic of the written word. Stories told in verse make her happy. She depends on Herman to protect her and speak for her when her social anxiety gets the best of her. But still she's here and looking forward to this so much!
