The guardian wakes to the scent of brine and the bitter tang of salt on her tongue. She lifts her head, feeling the world tilt as she does, and lowers it once more. Slowly, she becomes aware of the rest of her body, the aching bruises and salt-stung scrapes littering her legs and sides. Her wings unfurl, mercifully unscathed, and they shake water and sand from themselves as she flaps them cautiously back and forth.
More alert, she raises her head once more, the vertigo fading, allowing her to climb to her feet. Her claws sink into sugar soft sand, clipping against the odd pebble or shell as she begins to make her way along the shore, picking carefully around debris, piles of seaweed and broken branches mostly, remnants of a rough night on the shoreline.
The ocean is deceptively quiet, a brilliant blanket of blue stretching as far as her eyes can see, scarcely a cloud in the sky. A far cry from the black turmoil of the night before, the ferocious storm that sent her crashing into the beach, a desperate effort to escape the howling winds and thunderous surf below her.
In the silence of the storm's passing she looks down the length of the beach, eyes squinting as she catches movement.
There is another dragon up ahead.

It's been roughly an hour since the dragon woke among the rocks at the water's edge, wings badly bruised but thankfully not torn. In the time since, she's been sitting on a cleaner stretch of the beach, gingerly spreading her wings over the warm sand. Tilting her cheek in a pile of seaweed, she watches the inhabitants of a tidepool (three crabs, a snail, and one forlorn starfish) shift and move through the water of their small home.
She's taking her current situation in stride, considering. She doesn't know where she is. She's likely a long way away from her initial course, though, just judging from the ferocity of the storm that threw her here to begin with. Though she's unsure of where to go beyond the island, her next step, she decides, is actually further inland.
Beyond the beach is a copse of trees, promising a source of fresh water somewhere within them. Finally paying attention to the parched throbbing of her throat, she gently folds her wings and gets to her feet, intending to head into the treeline.
It's then that she sees another dragon coming toward her.

When the dragon woke this morning, rain was still falling on the beach, obscuring the early light of dawn with heavy grey clouds. Though he was hesitant to move forward without being entirely sure of his surroundings, the weather drove him into the trees, leaving the beach behind him. Beneath the dense foliage, he found respite from the rain, soothed by the heady scent of vegetation.
Now he sits in the safety of a massive tree's gnarled roots, listening to the sounds of the jungle around him. The chirp of birds and occasional shriek of a larger animal doesn't suggest there's danger in the immediate area, not for a dragon of his size, but that doesn't mean he can be complacent. He's seen tracks in the muddy forest floor, ones that belong to beasts large enough and smart enough to be a threat if provoked. Or perhaps without provocation at all.
On edge as he is, he spins sharply at the sound of large feet padding toward him, wings spreading in a threatening display, only to droop in surprise as two dragons make their way closer, one hissing in amusement, the other flashing her own wings in a bright greeting.
Some dragons ingest sand to soothe upset stomach, others build castles with it.
