There was a faint outline where the circle of flames had been, and the entrance to the cave was still there. "There was a campfire here when I landed," Tenebriel explained. "Then, the killer threw an explosive thing at the ground, igniting a flame around me. I think they wanted to lure me into that cave." He pointed with his claw. "But my instinct told me to leave the place." He lied about the guard. He didn't want to give away their identity or put them in any sort of danger. Since Aren had forgotten his cat mask today, his emotions were plain on his face, the shock, terror, and appalled expressions all passing over his features like the tide over a sandy shore, over and over as his mind whirled. He'd never been that good at hiding his emotions - the reason why he always wore the cat's mask - and the threat of their situation certainly wasn't helping. Aren wasn't in as bad a state as Laurent, but he certainly never imagined cruelty like this happening so close to those he cared about.

The burnt clearing is beyond words.
All Laurent can do is stare blankly as Tenebriel walks them through the ring of ashes, the remains of the campfire, the dark mouth of the cave…
Some part of him quietly notes the Wildclaw’s thin excuse of “instinct” and how unlikely that was, since the killer must’ve planned out every aspect of this murder. But he says nothing, just takes a few steps forward and runs his hand along the charred grass. He can’t tell if the trembling in his legs is from terror or fury. Probably both.
When Tenebriel told him the killer had struck again, he’d assumed it would be another simple setup. But this… this was sport. Whoever did this had wanted to watch Tenebriel run like a frightened animal. They’d wanted to savor his fear. It was… horrible.
Who could do something like this? Surely it… surely it couldn’t be…
The scent of burnt gasoline fills his nose. He can barely breathe. There’s too much, it’s all too much and he doesn’t- surely no one, surely no one could-
He doesn’t believe it. He knows everyone here. They were all good people. Or… well… maybe not good, but this! This was beyond everything!
He feels sick. He doesn’t want to see it. He wants to run away and never look another one of these twisted deaths in the face or just curl up in a ball and pretend it had never happened, that he’d never been here-
But he has to. For Belph. For the dead. For everyone. He can’t leave them.
So he closes his watering eyes, takes a deep breath, nearly chokes on it and quickly draws in another, then another… until his heartbeat has slowed enough that he can look his companions in the eye and slowly scan their faces:
Tenebriel was trying his best to remain calm, but every so often, a flicker of shock or grief would pass across his face. Aren looked almost exactly how he himself felt: disgusted and horrified and scared, and it’s enough to make his breath hitch again before he regains control of himself. Glenda’s expression was unreadable. He couldn’t tell if she was sad, or angry, or disappointed that Tenebriel wasn’t lying dead on the ground right now.
But no, surely not. Not her. She was so nice. He’d seen what she’d done with Holly, and no one who gave such kind gifts could ever, ever do something like this. Right?
Please, Lightweaver, please. It can’t be any of us! Surely we must’ve gotten something wrong! Surely none of us could’ve done this!
But he still had to.
Just keep going, Laurent. Keep steady. It’ll be over soon enough, and we’ll get the right dragon this time. You’ve just gotta keep going.
Surely, this time, things would be different.
Right?

Unfortunately, early on in the investigation, things came to a stalemate. The majority of the clan became divided between Glenda and Aren, and it soon became clear that the former would be departing that night. This time, Tenebriel dared to believe that they might have been right... but he wouldn't hold his breath. Laurent and Aren stayed by the leader's side as he informed the auctioneer-turned-assistant-detective about the decision to exile her. Glenda wasn't shocked by the news, since she had stood beside the leader as all of the clan members turned in their votes, but she was still saddened. "It's for the best," Tenebriel assured her as he escorted her to her den, intending to help her pack up her things. "I appreciate your help, but I think it's safer for you to leave now." "Safer for me, or safer for you?" Glenda asked with a tilt of her head. Seeing the wildlcaw's surprise at what could have been an admission of guilt, she laughed. "I'm just kidding, of course; might as well take this in stride. It'll be safer for me, not you. I really tried to help you while I was here... pointed you to every clue I saw." With a sigh, Glenda disappeared inside of her den. Tenebriel waited patiently outside, until the auctioneer reappeared with her truly impressive amount of goods. "I can buy some of that off your hands, if it's too much to carry," Tenebriel offered, wondering how the gaoler intended to carry all of her wares. "No, don't worry about it. Wouldn't want the killer stealing anything I left behind, haha!" Her smile faltering, the auctioneer turned away from the leader. "Goodbye, Tenebriel. I hope you find who did this." She then walked away in silence, and as Tenebriel watched her go, he knew deep down that they were wrong once again. Potentially triggering passages have been censored.) Since his search the previous night had been so rudely interrupted by the squabbling of his subordinates, Twizzler found himself once again patrolling the perimeter of the clan grounds for something to fill his food storage with. The prospect of encountering a killer along the way did not disturb him in the slightest; whoever this murderer was, they were surely no match for the progenitor of the Dead Zone's beasts. Besides, they weren't even very good at their job. Tenebriel escaped their clutches just fine, and he was nothing compared to the great millipede-like goliath. Nothing in Twizzler's eyes, that is. As he continued along his path, the great parasite noticed something peculiar on the ground before him. There was the smallest smattering of crimson adorning the dull leaves of grass he almost walked on. Intrigued, he leaned down and sniffed it, and was delighted to find that it was in fact blood. Lifting his head back up, he saw that the blood continued in a thin trail away from the clan, deeper into the ruins of the surrounding territory. Based on the feeble amount of blood, whoever was injured must not have been hurt too badly, but an injury was an injury. Perhaps it was indicative of the Killer making their next move, and following this trail would reveal their latest victim... or the Killer themselves. Either way, Twizzler would be happy to find what weakened dragon was waiting for him at the end of the path. Maybe he could finally get a meal in this gods-forsaken land. Excited by the prospect of a free meal, Twizzler followed the trail into the ruins, and was disappointed to find that it was a very short trail indeed. The injury must have been minor enough that it ceased its bleeding rather quickly. However, the scent of the dragon who left the trail remained, and so Twizzler continued following that scent as far as he could. Eventually, Twizzler reached an area where the ruins parted enough for it to stand up on his hind legs (all two dozen of them), and he had to stop and marvel at the sight before him. [spoiler]In this clearing of sorts, someone had taken the time to adorn the ruins with the remains of a butchered animal. As he stepped forward, he realized a moment too late that the tarp on the floor he had assumed was covering more cobblestone floor was really covering nothing at all, and it gave way the second he put any weight onto it. Due to his position unevenly distributing his own mass, he tumbled forward, and fell down into the hole that the Killer had so carefully obscured from view. As he crashed onto the bottom of the pit, a few seconds passed with him struggling to regain his bearing, and then suddenly he felt something sharp pierce his wing, then a place on his abdomen, then his tail. He lifted his head, and found himself face to face with a tiny opal cobra. The snake hissed at him. He hissed back. Unfortunately, by the time he realized where he had landed, it was already too late. The venomous snakes he had landed upon were already biting him relentlessly, and he could feel his body shutting down. Or, um. There's nothing for the mind like the sheer poetic visual of being a beautiful, ghostly figure in the early morning- Sterling can just imagine how anyone looking out their den window might see him and think, "Who is that? Where did he learn to be so ethereal?"

He makes sure to look periodically and wistfully up at the dim sky. Just to round out the image. It's healing for the soul to know how lovely he must appear as he wanders further and further from that nasty little clan.

And it's during one of these wistful upwards glances- how introspective, how graceful, what could someone so gorgeous be thinking at this hour?- that Sterling steps in something wet.

He's cringing back immediately, head whipping down to see his talons coated in red.

Horror and disgust reel Sterling's head back, and the source of the splotch of blood only makes it worse. A macabre criss-cross of wet, shining... things Sterling does not want to think about, gleaming even in the low light.

And it stops him in his tracks- a lucky thing indeed, because when he looks down the ground yawns open in front of him.

He can barely see the floor of the pit, but the mashed, twisted remains of the thing Sterling was preparing to antagonize stare distantly up at him.

A feeling something like regret almost overpowers the revulsion squirming through Sterling's chest. And the resounding shriek he lets out is far from ethereal, graceful, or gorgeous.

But those situations took place far from the traveller's shelter; antagonistic spirits had stopped showing up around the shelter shortly after Tenebriel had moved in, most likely thanks to Twizzler. He turned to his fellow Wildclaw. Even though Sterling was already grey, his face seemed much more ashen. He had to get Sterling out of this place and make sure no one else came by as well. It wasn't something anyone could stand looking at. "Sterling?" He called. He had to get the Wildclaw out of whatever shock he was in. "Sterling!"
