STERLING

A white rose in a bottle.

A slice of the scene 'Garden Arches', specifically showing topiary arches with roses, with a dirt path in the background.
Sterling's grandfather set him up perfectly. He has high status, advisory power, and a desk job answering merchant letters that gives him outsized influence. His family is thriving, they practically run this fledgling government. Sterling has power. And it's the dullest thing in the universe. Not having to do any real work is absolutely wonderful, but there's nothing to fill his free hours with out here.

It's a small swamp, and a scary number of the dragons here are related. Being Marquess's grandson means half the Highlands are his relatives or in-laws. There can't be fish in the sea when the sea is a puddle.

Sometimes Sterling even looks down with envy at the rabble roughing it in the swamp- at least they get to do things. Gross mud-wading things, but things. It's extremely enviable when it doesn't just seem hard and unsanitary. The same goes for the merchant ships- sailors always seem so ragged and dirty, but so free.

Ugh. His stupid sister might have been right to leave.

Sterling isn't necessarily stupid, at least not entirely. But his ego is far, far outsized considering his only real skill is making himself look pretty.

Periodic traveling helps soften the ache of boredom, but he can only stay away for so long before he risks his position. He's had some incredible thrills just by hitching rides on ships and seeing where they end up, but he always has to come back to comfort and wealth and stability in the end.

After all, Grandfather would kill Sterling if he fully ditched- because Aurous would kill Grandfather. Marquess is out on a limb for all of his descendants, getting them these cushy administrative jobs.

But regardless, Sterling is languishing. He's bothered the local populace to the point that only Starling and Glass will entertain him anymore, and Starling seems to be... attempting to friendzone him, but too nice to actually do it. Glass might be more promising, but for a Wind-child he is awfully stubborn. Sterling might be at this so long that he develops an actual, authentic crush. Ew.

At least the meat-thing that refuses to die can still give him a thrill. That one is heart-pounding- and absolutely revolting, too, but Sterling considers the discomfort and fear for his life a small indulgence in favor of practically courting Death itself.
