TOPIC | dragon lore :))
Hi, I’m kind of new to FR as well as the forums, and I honestly don’t plan to use them any more than this unless i have any questions haha.
Anyway, does anyone have any tips on making lore for your dragons? I want to, but I have no clue where to start. Thanks!

My first advice would be to not feel any pressure or obligation to give your dragons lore if nothing's really coming to you. You can start like I did with pretty small headcannon-blurbs like what I've got on my favorite dragon, Beans & if a certain dragon really lights a creative spark, then you can go ham on the lore. That happened to me for Ele as I was collecting all her gene scrolls & such. It took a while so I had a long time to think about what I wanted to say & how I wanted to say it & maybe writing one dragon's lore can inspire another's, which is what happened with Seshii as I was working through Ele's So basically, don't feel obligated to write something for a dragon if no clear inspiration for it is coming to you, & don't feel bad about writing vastly different amounts of lore for different dragons! That said, it can help to start with short lore-bits like bullet points before writing out anything lengthy or detailed, like writing an essay but actually enjoyable

if you're super struggling, i would recommend the encylopedia's breed entries. obv you don't need to follow them, but they give you a list of standard breed traits that you can work in to tie your dragons into the world. [columns][nextcol] ex. coatls, by lore, have cultural superstitions around pale / faded feathers. i have a coatl who is XXX pearl. pearl is a very pale color, so i wrote him having to leave his original clan because of that superstition. then i built his personality around that--what i wanted to see from a character and how that character would react to being exiled from everything he'd ever known because of something out of his control.[/columns] if that feels too cookie-cutter (and it can for some folks! no shame in it, some people want to go off and do their own thing rather than feel 'constrained' by the site canon!) it would be good to pin down cornerstones and go from there. what does your clan do? what goal keeps them all together? are they strangers banded together trying to survive? are they a militia? do they run a shop? a library? a restaurant? figuring out what you'd like your clan to be can help you slot your dragons into roles. ex. say you've decided your dragons were going to be a bunch of pirates. cool. who is the captain? who is the first mate? are they all on board willingly, or was someone born into it or fell in with them because they had nowhere else to go? do the crewmates get along, or do they fight? are they all of one mind when it comes to the pecking order, or is there mutiny brewing among some of them? and you don't even need to pick just one thing, either. your lair can be one thing and your hibden could be another. or every tab could be its own thing or every page of every tab. (i have a tab just for gardeners and familiar trainers, for instance.)

When I first created my lore, I started with a concept of where I wanted it to be. At the time, that meant a war-like clan. My ideas at first weren't super creative, and I left a lot of things vague, but over time I was able to finesse my lore into something specific that met all the things I love. ^u^

For each individual dragon, to me it's always been more spontaneous. I'll just be looking through my lair and get the itch to write for a specific dragon, or I'll hear a song and thing it would be great to write something that felt similar. Then I think of where the dragon has been, their home flight versus where my clan is now, and what going from A to B might look like for that dragon. Having something to pull inspiration from (like a song) is a great help, and it was because of FR that I made a character themes playlist. I add any song that gives me the urge to write to it! Started it 4 years ago and have 171 songs and counting to use. \o/

@BriidledChaos

If you're struggling with inspiration, I recommend looking for subspecies. They usually narrow down color/flight/breed/gene requirements and give some lore backdrop to a particular kind of dragon. They're great for kickstarting those bios, and you can make connections with other writers too! Let me know if you want subspecies recommendations to get you started. :)

Don't feel pressured into writing long paragraphs of lore if thats not for you. If it is, then awesome! Go crazy! But don't be afraid to just use bullet points to get down any ideas you have for your dragon, especially as just a starting point. I've certainly found it a lot easier to do that, and then if I get inspired, to write something with a bit more substance after the fact (Loki currently just has bullet points, while Chroma has both bullet points and a fully fledged story) For specific roles and such, look around the forums for inspiration, use the search function to find what others have posted or create a thread asking others to share their dragons based around what you're looking for (also helpful if you're wanting help with outfit ideas), a lot of people would be glad to show of their precious babies! You can also ask for help with ideas on what a dragons specific job or role could be, or if theres a recent one, use a headcanon thread for an easy starting point you can work off of Fizz here got a paragraph from the Headcanon a Dragon above you thread, which developed into and influenced his lore
