Oh heck. I have been binging the rest of the backlog on my off hours at work. I finally catch up fully tonight in time for major tragedy. ;;_;;

The major question is now, who takes up the mantle of leader? My money is on Burns, as he has been a long-standing member, and also a leader in the past (and sort of Sage's significant other?). Or, possibly on Fenrir as her oldest child who is still around. He has a good head on his shoulders, and is used to looking after others. Either would make a solid leader in my book.

In any regard, I am excited to see where this goes!

@GrinningWolf24

Sorry it had to take such a sad turn :(

Strangely enough, both of those are people I have been considering. You'll see who it is in the next chapter, which I am about to start writing.

He wanted to hunt, devour. in fact, he was pretty sure he was hungry enough to devour the whole of Sornieth. It had been a hard day for the clan, especially for his family. He had spent the day comforting them and doing all he could to hold everything together. Tomorrow, he'd have to send Niclas out with a letter for the pirates, so they could hear the news as well. It was difficult too, to have no body to bury. He would have to sort out some sort of memorial. They couldn't not do anything. Now that everyone had fallen into an uneasy sleep, he could be alone with his emotions. Everything would hold together for the night. So, he closed his eyes and let the grief for his love and his daughter wash over him. He was not a stranger to grief, it was an old friend to him, but it's sting never lessened. It would cling to him, like a gem from his gembond, for the rest of his life. Eventually, he would get used to carrying its weight, but it would always be there. It was only right that he took these moments where he could to stop being strong and feel instead. Tears began to fall so freely from his eyes, it took a while to realize that he was not entirely alone. "You heard the news?" Burns asked the nature sprite wiping his nose on one of the pieces of fabric that draped off of him. "I felt it, when she passed, the link was severed." Refuge explained. She seemed less happy than the times when Burns had seen her in the past. He wings drooped, and she was not flying as high. "But, she died fulfilling her duty - protecting a member of this clan." "What should we do now?" Burns asked. "I have ideas, of course, but you are the heart of this place. You are the reason we are all protected. You should get a say. And I'll make sure your will is done throughout this clan." The sprite grinned sadly, a knowing look in her eyes. "I knew you would say that. You have always been a great leader, one who understands what it is like to be looked down upon, so you lift others up. It is thanks to you that Sage began to find the joy of life once more." "Thank you," Burns was uncomfortable with such direct praise, but he knew better than to argue with an aspect of the Gladekeeper. "The Refuge will need a new guardian," Refuge went on. "Another dragon to carry the load of the charges of all who find safety here. The next leader, if you would call it that. It is technically my selection, I have the powers to make a dragon's form shift to fulfill the purpose. But, I would not make such drastic changes and hand off such immense responsibility without consent." "Who were you thinking of? I could wake them," Burns offered. "If I had chosen anyone else, I would have appeared to them instead," Refuge giggled. "It's you I want to offer the role to, if you want it." "Me?" Burns was taken aback. He had experience, of course. He had been leader of a clan once before. But he had never expected such a mantle to be offered to him again. He was content to support from the sidelines, offering guidance, but never asking for the power to make decisions. "Yes you, if you want. Is this is not something you desire, I will offer it to someone else. But, you are my first choice." Refuge said. "Of course I will take it," Burns said, dipping his head. "My duty has been to this clan ever since I set foot in here. I would be honoured to guide us into our next era." "Very well." Refuge grinned. "Now, watch out, it may take some time to adjust to your new body." Before Burns could respond, a sparkling green dust began to fall on him, and he felt bulges begin to form underneath his skin. He was growing bigger at an alarming rate, and his crests were shifting and moving into fins and frills. His previously hairless head began to sprout a beard, and gills began to etch into the side of his neck. It wasn't painful, but he was suddenly unaware of how his limbs moved, or how to balance himself. He looked around for Refuge to ask for help, but she was already gone. Instead, he found himself losing his balance and plummeting towards the clearing floor, breaking through and bounding off of branches to slow his fall. He began to wish he had gone through his transformation on the ground instead of at the top of the tree. He tried to extend his wings to catch his fall, but forgot about how adept most breeds were at flying in comparison to bogsneaks, and found the air catching in his wings in ways he did not expect. Eventually, he crashed to the ground with a loud thud. He winced, partially from pain (though nothing seemed to be broken) and partially in the hopes he had not woken anyone. "Uh, dad, is that you? Are you okay?" A voice called out from the dark as another dragon emerged, clearly just waking up. It's just, uh, been a day full of changes." Burns explained, feeling like it was a bit of an understatement. Immediately, he was rushed with a strange emotion looking at his son that he had never felt before. He soon became aware of how similar threads of emotion stretched to other parts of the clearing, where he knew other dragons slept. Suddenly, he understood the caution Sage had fallen back on so frequently, the sense of duty that she carried on her shoulders. Burns now carried that. WOAH, GUARDIAN BURNS? He actually looks REALLY good as a guardian, and I love the imagery that you built around him suddenly feeling the connection to Sage’s charge.

I am quite worried about Cadavor.

NO NOT SAGE D:

I think we all thought she'd live to the very end, it's very sad to see her go. :( on that note though, all hail Burns the new leader! He looks surprisingly good as a Guardian. (and whoops, crashing from a tree is not really the best way to start his leadership. LOL)

@Disillusionist Victor deserves all the hugs!!! I'm glad you like Fabian so much!!! As much as I love hatching nests and buying mates for heirs, it's always fun to just get a standard familiar pull and get someone completely fresh! THANK YOU!!! I had a blast writing it! @Leopardmask Thank you!!! @octagaze Thank you!!! I was quite surprised at just how good he looks as well! That is such a valid feeling to have about Cavador. @Tirtouga678 I know, it certainly was a shock all around. But now we get Guardian!Burns!!! And yes, falling from a tree was certainly not the most dignified [emoji=guardian tongue size=2]

Cavadar asked, not taking his eyes off of his sons. "They are brimming with it," Cerys confirmed. "We should keep them here. Cavador eyed Cerys critically, feeling as though this was somehow a trick. "I'm not one for names, I would just give them a number. Victor only has a name because he remembered his old one." Cerys sighed. "If you don't want to name them, I'll just given them other numbers." "Very well," Cavador said. "They will be Doppio and Dominga." The spiral pointed at each of his sons as he assigned them their names. "Let me know when they wake up, I'll just be experimenting with some Shade stuff out back." "Will do," Cerys said, looking down at a notepad and scribbling down notes. Cavador grinned and slipped away.
