Day One: The Buried
buried-badge-6.png

A creeping fear has been stalking the construction workers in the basements. Walls close in on them; the Light is far out of reach no matter how far they run towards it; rubble crumbles around them, trapping them beneath the earth. Workers burst from the cellars out of breath and exhausted, terrified until they see the sky above them.

The pearlcatcher archivist looks pleased to see you, even as a tundra in construction gear rushes out of the stairwell behind them. “You’re here! I’m glad to see you’re eager to get started. Something is frightening the workers inside the building, particularly underground. They claim sudden claustrophobia, shortness of breath, and unbearable pressure.

“I’m sure there are many things you could do to find the root of this mess. Explore the basements of the library, interview the workers -- perhaps convince some to go back to work -- and search for some books that have, ahem, gone missing from the Lightner collection. Something which has many of the scholars on edge. Can’t imagine why.”

They turn back to their reports, muttering to themselves.

Slap me down on the general pinglist please!

I won’t be able to participate the first couple days die to birthday celebrations but I can at least add to the wall! All of my TMA fandragons can be found here, though it’s up to you guys if you want to add Watcher or LastWords (CW for eyes on both). I also have at least five more planned but I doubt I’ll have any of them before this is over.

I should probably put specific CWs for everything in there (and my miscellaneous tab) but there’s so much and I’m not sure what’s worth the CWs or not. So, sorry it’s a bit vague. Speaking of my miscellaneous tab, there’s some fun TMA references (though not direct fandragons) located in there for fans to find.

I look forward to writing for this! I love TMA and I love writing horror so this is an amazing event/raffle for me. Makes me wonder if I should have a member of my Pinkerlocke crew or Janice as my main dragon for this.

Quick Edit: Please do not add Veil Michael as he’s been replaced with an Obelisk. If someone would like him I’d be happy to give him and his UMA to another fan. Same with the one remaining male from breeding my Oliver fandragon in my HD if you can locate him.

The books in Lightner’s archives all have one thing in common: They are strange in ways that can be described as cursed, even haunted. A few deal quite obviously with specific phobias in some way. Our three bonus round books are definitely of this last variety.

(If you would like to check out the original, Magnus Archives equivalent, the first mention of Jurgen Leitner and his books appears in episode 4: Page Turner.)

Details on each round are after the Rules and Guidelines.

This Lightner is mired in a fragment of Shade-generated fear that preys specifically on the terror surrounding utter destruction and devastation without hope. It has a particular thirst for lost potential and is a cruel shadow of fire that consumes and destroys without any of the benefits of real fire. No fertile ashes, no light of hope, no gentle warmth.

You have until the end of Day 4, June 23rd, (FR 11:59pm) to write a post detailing what that means for this particular book. If you’d like insight into more about this particular entity of fear within the Magnus Archives, you can check out the wiki page on The Desolation. CW: Spoilers and a more serious treatment of horror can be found within the podcast and its wiki pages. Please take care if you are sensitive to particular phobias and content.

Perhaps they were afraid of the dark? But Melpomene could swear she's seen a fellow shadow dragon among the shaking workers, someone that should be well adjusted to this environment. Even earth dragons were covered in blankets and mumbling about the walls closing in on them. When Mel tried to ask them a few questions though, they became agitated and hastily scurried away from her. She huffed in disappointment. Now she would have to crawl in there herself and get covered in mud and dust and rubble, ugh. With her powers and her Lost Story by her side, the thought that something unspeakable might be lurking in there didn't even cross her mind. The ground under her was soft, almost as if it was dug out recently, and with each step her claws sunk into it. Perhaps it was just her imagination, but she felt that, ever so slightly, they were sinking deeper and deeper the further down she walked. Most likely it was her weight, she tried to reason. A big wildclaw like her couldn't expect to not leave her footprint everywhere. What worried her though, was the water she heard splashing under her feet after a few meters down. As a shadow dragon, Melpomene could see in the dark, but the monotone rock around her was throwing her perception of space off. Were these walls getting closer or was she just tired? Was the cieling occasionally touching her horns or was it just a stalactite? And most importantly, was the water getting ever so slightly higher or was it just the waves formed by her steps? Ever since she lost her lover, she's had a fear of drowning, even though she always insisted she didn't. It was fine! It's just a few inches of water, if it gets worse, she'll just turn back, no need to panic. If nothing else, it would be a fun little experience to write about. When the water made it to her knees, she finally gave up and decided to turn back. It seemed that the basements have flooded or they must have been connected to a cave with an underwater portion and she just happened to take the wrong path. Either way, she didn't have gills so this was as far as her vision could take her. Any further and she wouldn't be able to make out the bottom of the murky water and who knows if this thing had a steep drop. As she tried to turn around though, she realised the walls have indeed gotten extremely close. If she was a bit larger, she wouldn't be able to fully turn and she would have gotten stuck. A shiver run down her spine as she started making her way back. Weirdly enough, the path wasn't getting any wider as she expected. It was bigger when she walking wasn't it? Why was it getting smaller? The walls were pushing her wings closer and closer to her body and the cieling was definetly getting shorter, forcing her to duck and eventually, desperatly, crawl. Melpomene was never one to suffer from claustophobia, but she felt like she might as well start developing it. At least, the water seemed to have recided. In a desperate attempt to force her way through, a few kilometers down, she got stuck. How could she have been so stupid to have let herself get stuck. She's not athletic, of course she wouldn't be able to squeeze past that tiny tube that was trying to pass itself as the same path she took to get in, why did she even try. The Lost Story phasing through the wall informed her that the rock was so thick, she couldn't even make it to the surface all this time she was gone. Thanks Ice, that was very helpful. While waiting for the Lost Story to return from her second try, Melpomene took to writing, as her tiny little hands were free to move and she needed something to ease her despair. She could feel the cieling pressing her spine. Each minute she took to write a few words, the walls seemed to somehow squeeze her even more, the oxygen seemed to deplete unnaturally fast and somewhere behind her, in horror, she could hear water running. Was it raining outside? Did the rain corrode the earth, forcing it to bury her alive and allowing water to seep in? No, she should calm down, otherwise she'd lose her oxygen together with her mind. Her ink turned into bones and her page turned into wings and with a familiar glow, her writing came to life as a dragon. Before it could even form its skeleton, the creature bumped its head on the low cieling, which seemed to enrage it beyond belief, because it started thrusting and clawing at the ground around it in a blind fit of rage. Unfortunately, Melpomene was apparently "ground" too. By the time it had fully formed and forced a way out by an insanely powerful breath, Melpomene was severly injured. When the paramedics found her at the entrance of the basement, she was covered in blood, both her wings and some of her ribs have been broken by the squeeze of the walls, and she was showing signs of asphyxiation. As she was waiting for her turn to get healed, Melpomene couldn't help but seek out fellow explorers and workers to share her experiences with, despite her limited mobility. Sure, it was terrifying, but somehow she couldn't help but feel fascinated by it. She was a horror writer, after all.
