I am a canvas...

diems-silver-vertical-border-darker.png

Perhaps all shapeshifters consider themselves as such? I wouldn't know, I've never knowingly met another.
I grew up having to hide my gift: The ability to change every detail easier than most dragons can change apparel - looks, personality, gender, species. I'm limited only to forms with the same number of limbs. When you include the two-legged forms* most dragons can shift into already, that's not much of a limitation at all.

Either way, that means there isn't even an original me - only another painting, and this one from the broad, forceful strokes of other claws. I neither like, nor frequently use that first painting, it is more my gran's work. She and I never got along.

I've created many paintings of my own over the years since I left home. Each with their own names, even their own personalities - a mask for every occasion. Paintings all the way down. Masks under masks.

I don’t know who I am.

Lately, I've spent most of my time as a pearlcatcher, an androgynous storyteller by the name of Diem. I still hide my true nature from others, but I've permitted this painting my inherent flexibilities regarding gender.

They are my sixth completed work, following directly after a skydancer named Rowan, whom I still shift into on regular occasions. Beyond those six I've worn many other, more temporary masks. Not yet completed works in their own right - however complete any one of us can be at various points in our lives.

Diem loves a good story more than anything - telling them and hearing them. They might’ve cooped themself up in a library if they weren’t so wretched at reading. Give them people to interact with any day over words on a page. We share that in common, our attention has a tendency to wander too often from the written word.

They make friends easily and love to encourage creative pursuits in others.

Their…our first taste of true acceptance came after washing up on an uncharted wildland, near death and weak. There we met an archfey - one who took on the form of a skydancer made of the starlit dark blues of the night sky. They saw through the masks, taught me how to let go and slide into my natural state - a colourless form and visage that my gran reviled and my mother feared. My father was never in the picture, though it seems I got this gift from him.

For the first time someone accepted and even delighted in me, the real me, whoever that is. Falling in love with that archfey was the easiest thing I’d ever done, though I know it is something of a one-sided thing. Oh I’ve somehow won their favor, attracted their attention, even affections, but they are far older than anything I know, far beyond me. It’s a little like having a whole galaxy take special note of your existence. At best you’re a beloved pet.

An entirely devoted, beloved pet.

They watch over me through our bond now, never truly apart no matter how far my newest adventure takes me. My life is an exciting wonder thanks to their blessings and gifts - magic I’ve used to embellish my storytelling and even save people alongside the friends I’ve made since my return. Friends Diem has made. None of them know the truth, only this newest mask.

* Gijinkas/humanoid forms are IC in my lore. It's the form most of my dragons adopt to use communal spaces such as libraries and shops. It is assumed that the humanoid figures in ancient Azerothian records and art were also dragons. Normally this is a limited magic that grants little control over that appearance (which is instead based on dragon colours, genes, flight, etc.)

diems-short-divider.png

A storyteller bound to an arch fey...
Diem loves stories in every form with all their heart but has difficulty focusing enough to get much benefit from the ones written down (much to their embarrassment and regret). The truth is relative. They are an impulsive, charismatic dragon with a tendency to befriend anyone and everyone. They do love attention, but they are also very fond of encouraging others toward creative pursuits as well. They are also known for taking the time to show an interest in those who seem lonely and generally overlooked.

Has pretty much willingly and unhesitatingly sold everything they ever were, are, or will be over to an archfey without regret or without fully realizing they've done so out of naive, entirely trusting and smitten devotion. They don't make the mistake of over-estimating their importance in turn, no matter how much attention Ulaigh lavishes on them. It is enough that they somehow managed to catch the attention and favor of the stars incarnate. That wreathed pearl in Ulaigh's bio? Yeah. It's Diem's soul lol.

Generally speaking, they tell no one about their true nature, fake the appearance of their pearl, and never mention Ulaigh by name. Even the story they tell of their patron to audiences is widely different from reality. That being said, they won't hesitate to secure new deals for their patron.

These days they can mostly be spotted traveling with a group of friends. As a group they call themselves "The Silver Scale Pack" in honor of a boon granted to aid in the first quest that truly unified them - a mysterious silvery dragon scale of unknown composition (Diem, Selphina, Rana, Hickory, and Ixayl'anu).

They are a master of disguise and mimicry - not the most intelligent, but means well and is full of the ADHD.

Also: Diem might be the meta story-teller of my collection. Which is to say all the stories in finished bios? They are stories Diem is telling the visitor. Imagine much magic special effects, many voices, much wow! A+ mimicry.

The umbra wolf is meant to represent their blink dog, Sciath (pronounced Shkee-uh), which means guard/shield. The reskinned medium fey they summon with the "Summon fey" spell in D&D.

diems-silver-vertical-border-darker.png
CymYVqQ.png

Ceo (Kee-yoh), the cat, is actually an adorable, dainty russian blue, more like the cat to the left and not a Scottish fold (referencing the apparel cat). I so wish the black cat came in silver lol. Ceo (Misty) is a nickname for Ceobhránach (Mist). This is their fey familiar in D&D.

"I ended up going for Diem! They're so pretty, I love them! The accent goes hand in hand with all of their apparel, and I love their sort of,, magical vibe. I love the mix of blues, purples and blacks!"

- Tinydancersss

"Oh my gosh, I cannot express enough about how much I love them! It makes me so happy when people talk about their DnD characters, they are always so interesting. A lot of my favorite characters are the talented mage types, I get the feeling they'd vibe super well with my own main DnD character. <3

...Personality aside! The apparel is lovely and well put together, funny enough whenever I want to make a mage I often choose pearls. They're so... Scholarly? I can't explain it haha, anyways the scene/familiar/apparel & accent combo is super metal! I can tell how much love & time you've put into this dragon.

In conclusion, I love them!!"

"Is rare for me to see a dragon I think can pull off Starwood Veil, but Diem, they can and they do it well it doesn't seem out of place on them and fits with the rest."
(From Like any dragon get a full lair crawl!)
- Hraesvelgr

"Diem has some of the cleverest apparel layering I've seen in awhile! I love the use of the starwood veil with the classy tailcoat, it strikes the perfect balance between the sharp suit and whimsical wizard vibes they have going on effortlessly!"
(From Best Outfit Above You!)
- RidgeButch

"Lovely shares this week! [Omit] And Diem is so pretty! I love their outfit - it made me notice all sorts of little details of the starwood veil especially that I hadn’t picked up on before, with the way the pale blue of their accent draws out the little flowers on the veil."

"Goodness, Diem is wonderful and gorgeous! I love their outfit so much! Also the art of them is incredible... so gorgeous!"
(From Saro's Weekly Theme & Star Exchange <3)
- Technophage

"All your dragons are wonderful Saronai, but Diem is definitely my favourite, I adore storytellers especially magical ones that use their powers to embellish their tales. And I also love characters that encourage others, and that make efforts to include those who may be shy/anxious. Diem's outfit is also wonderful, even without reading their lore I would instantly know that they were some kind of magical entertainer."
(From Saro's Weekly Theme & Star Exchange <3)
- TheRookGryphon

"First of all I would love to mention that your comfort dragons look exceptionally pleasant and becalming, each in their own, unique ways. You did a fabulous job on their themes and descriptions, and they all received their stars from me!
[Omit]
Diem is simply glorious and fantastic. I love their (meta) story-teller theme a lot, and it feels like they will take you into the land of magic, dreams, and fantasy to give you enough strenght and inspiration to solve the problems you have, or to brighten up your mood when you're feeling down. I really like how your comfort dragons are all connected to creativity in one way or another! I think it's very important that they not only heal the pain, but also give you the energy and courage to heal yourself in the end, and become creative again, giving a meaning to your own life. I think it's a beautiful message <3"
(From Saro's Weekly Theme & Star Exchange <3)
- Luunai

"I really love all your example dragons, [omit].
Reading about Diem was very lovely too, they seem like such a genuinely kind character, someone who'd be an amazing friend. I also love their little cat :D"
(From Saro's Weekly Theme & Star Exchange <3)
- Kaimon

"Oh, I Liked all of these [Omit].

I think my favorite is Diem, though... even though male PC is not one of my favored poses. But this dragon is no stuffed shirt! The way they go about their "threrapy" without being so overt is marvelous. I really admire people who can do that, lifting others up without being obvious, just leaving you feeling better about yourself! It's a gift. Plus the colors on them are soothing, and that accent blends so beautifully with their apparel - or maybe vice versa!"
(From Saro's Weekly Theme & Star Exchange <3)
- Deladria

"Diem just looks cool. That apparel combination is glorious, I love it. They definitely look like an entertainer and I would love to hear one of their stories! I love characters who encourage and support others because that's just who they are as a person, and Diem sounds like they would be a wonderful dragon to befriend. :D"
(From Saro's Weekly Theme & Star Exchange <3)

Part Two:
"Ohhh I just went back and read the story in Diem's bio, wowww! Delightful to read. :D What an interesting backstory. I particularly liked ||the way that they slip between referring to Diem as 'they' and 'me', that's such a nice touch, and also while I'm spoiler-texting I love the idea of forms being 'completed works' - I'm really intrigued by that, do you have an idea of what those six 'masks' were beyond Rowan...? Or was Rowan what Diem looked like before they arrived in your Lair??|| I really enjoyed learning more about them, discovering their gift (!) and the hints about their family..."
- Lundlaeva

"Good. Ness. I went to Diem looking for the one little marble art you mentioned, and got so much more. Even a playlist?? That's incredible, all the work and art and molding and shaping you've done of them over the years! <3"
(From Delari Sylvae's Guestbook)
- Teahl

"I love Diem's outfit and the way the skin shows a creature in their pearl. I really like how in their bio the 'Charming', 'Creative', and 'Impulsive' aren't on one line, but instead in a little line. Thirdly, I love how much effort you put into this dragon overall, you can really tell this is a work of love!"
(From Star Lighting Birthday Raffle 2024)
- lunawolf23

"oh my goodness, starting off good. i LOVE purple dragons and diem is just perfect! their art is amazing as well! i also really like how to display their alternate outfits! i never think to save my dragons' previous outfits whenever i change them, but this might inspire me to so i can showcase them!"

Alternative outfits:

Diem loves dressing up, for fashion shows or just a specific role they're playing while telling a story, and sometimes just for fun. Sometimes the outfit is crafted purely from illusion magic that your hand will pass right through!

Sweet Memories
Ice Magic

Theme: "Summer Heat"

This is definitely something Diem would combat with frost fey magic. Every piece of gear is icy, frosty, or snowy and imbued with those magics. It's like walking around wearing your personal, incredibly stylish AC unit. Even D&D Diem makes heavy use of cantrips like prestidigitation warm, cool, clean, or dry for comfort, as needed. They love magic.

Theme: "Moonlit Wonders" from Arcane's 2022 Dressed to impress event.

Diem loves night-time sky aesthetics. Or pretty much anything that reminds them of their Archfey patron, Ulaigh. In fact, this might be what they plan to wear to the next fey masquerade they attend by Ulaigh's side.

Daytime Delights

Theme: "Daytime Delights" from Arcane's 2022 Dressed to impress event.

Blue skies and fluffy white clouds are beautiful, as is a nice sunlit rain, but the liminal existence of sunrise and sunset are by far the most artistic, spectacular, and regularly occurring points of each day, bracketing the full event of the sun's kiss.

Besides, entirely devoted to an archfey, Diem themself feels the resonant hum of the liminal. Especially that point, if it were not for our awareness of time and space, we would be uncertain which is which. In this outfit, Diem takes inspiration from both: The beauty in a day, from start to finish.
