Day 26 - Lich

Who knows what prompts a Necromancer to turn to the Shade for help. Some of them might crave more power, others find themselves in a tough situation and open their souls to the entity in a deserate call for help. Some might simply be curious. The reasons don't really matter to Red. The only thing that matters is that they betrayed the Plaguebringer and their kind, and they need to go. They are dangerous. Ghouls are pathetic failures, they are weak, but they fail the trials because they are unworthy. The Lichs choose to be unworthy. Even though some become Necromancers first. It's one thing to not receive a blessing from the Mother, and another to willingly reject it.

Day 27 - Rot

Ranera always smirks with indulgence whenever she hears how scared dragons were of rot. Stories about Necromancers always have that element in them - a dragon touched by some fungi or other pathogen and their skin turning into rotten flesh.

Boring.

All these fancy tricks migh look terrifying, they're very Plague-like, very unpleasant. But it's certainly not the best a skilled Necromancer can do. Ranera likes to think that other Necromancers use these visual things just because they looked impressive. She hoped they didn't actually believe that they really were impressive. Either way, she couldn't be bothered. She knew what was truly terrifying. And it wasn't any fungus, rot, or decay. It was what Necromancers can do to one's mind. At least some of them, like herself.

Even though she was more of a forager herself, she grew herbs and liked learning about any new plants. And Escherichia always had something interesting to say about hers. She had a garden full of poisonous flowers, most of them looked inconspicuous - small flowers in dull colors that were hard to notice hidden behind large leaves. But some had beautiful, bright colors, that almost screamed 'toxic.' There were some that had tiny berries. They looked delicious, but hid a deadly secret inside them. Escherichia used her plants in various potions, she could modify the poison inside them to treat some diseases. But Jalava believed that the Necromancer simply enjoyed spending her time with her plants. She also kept some poisonous and venomous animals, but it was the plants that always made her change her usually harsh or slighly sarcastic tone. Whenever she talked about her garden, her voice would sound slightly softer. That's why Jalava enjoyed spending time with Escherichia whenever she was collecting what she'd grown. There was something magical about all these plants that made her into a different dragon and Jalava always anticipated the week before the Riot of Rot, as that's when most of Escherichia's plants were ready for the Necromancer to harvest them in preparation foe the festival. ----- Day 31 - Hallowed The Necromancers in the clan are all different. Her mate, Celiac, is a devout researcher, who probably doesn't care as much about the spiritual part of being a Necromancer, as he cares about learning the secrets of his kind. And Ranera, even though she joined recently, has already shown herself to be quite eccentric, but also talented in a rare art of healing magic and minds. He recently became friends with Merga, a shy and quiet Neutralized Ghoul healed by Celiac. Even though most of these dragons could be described as friends, or at least acquaintances, they rarely spend time altogether. But each year for the Riot of Rot, this group always travels to the Scarred Wasteland. They even let the Ghoul Netsu join them. It's the time when they celebrate the Plague together and worship the Plaguebringer (maybe except for Merga, she goes with them only on Celiac's request). They take part in various celebrations, but always pick one day to go to the Rotrock Rim, the place where they all attempted the trials, the place that shaped them and their future lives. For better or worse. They spend a few hours there, meditating and looking back at the time when they were touched by the Plaguebringer, each one with a different Plague. And even though they all chose to live in the Sunbeam Ruins, they all know how special this place is, how scared and hallowed the ground. It's the place where they can almost feel the presence of their Mother. Or at least the Plague she gifts this land with every day.

He’d been wary at first of having another Necromancer as a regular customer but the other Mirror seemed to be perfectly kind. He’d even taken the time once or twice to sit down with Affo for a cup of coffee. Somn grinned back as he stepped up to the counter for Affo to hand him the usual cold brew. “Hi, thanks! Do you have some free time?” Somn looked around. “Doesn’t seem too busy today. Come and sit with me?” Affo’s fins dipped a little, but he decided Somn hadn’t meant anything by pointing out how poorly his business was going today. He just nodded. “Yeah, let me clean up and I’ll sit with you. We were talking about the Trials last time?” Somn’s smile flickered as he looked into the darkness of his own coffee. “We were. It’s the reason I came by. I just needed to talk about it with someone and thought you would be the right dragon.” Affo looked over the counter, his four eyes widening. “I’ll be right out.” Affo poured himself a cup of coffee and doctored it up before joining Somn at his usual table. Somn sighed and sipped his drink before lifting mournful eyes to Affo. “I’ve never told anyone about this. You know I took my trails with my brother. He… didn’t make it. We agreed to be each other’s Trial of Contagion. Everything happened so fast for me and he wasn’t even sick when I was ready. Or we thought he wasn’t. I knew I had to let the disease fester. So I went hunting and - The Mother’s blessings overcame him.” Somn said the last delicately, one paw up on the table, staring down at his drink again. Affo laid his own claws over the other mirror’s, gently squeezing. “I understand more than you realize - my friends.” He shook his head, tired suddenly. Affo went on. “My friends. Many of them-” He frowned, swaying slightly with exhaustion. “Didn’t-” There was something in his body, the powers he rarely used tingled awake to warn him too late. Still, he pushed back, trying to dismiss the illness surging through him. “Why?” He asked, eyes heavy. “Because you’re pathetic. Like my brother. Unlike him, you can be reeducated.” The last thing he saw was Somn's gleaming smile Day 22: Plague Haemon Doctor Petrichor says he can cure me. It tells me that this is fruitless, the hunger will not leave me. It will not leave me. I can feel it feeding, devouring each new plague the Doctor gives me, pulling them through my blood and flesh. It's a strange feeling, not painful, but as though long fingers are moving through me gathering the contagion. Some days when I ache as it does this, sick and hot with a fever, I welcome its cold touch. Others I want to scream at the insidious unnaturalness of it all. I am sickened more by what I have become than any illness I am infected with. What will happen to me? I am afraid to find out, but not even the Shade can grant me the power to stop time. I had seen the final moments of many dragons and I knew mine was coming. Then in the darkness of the cave I had chosen for my Trials something moved. I tried to scramble away but it hurt so much all I could do was weep. Cold, like icy fear in my veins, flooded me. I was afraid but the cold wasn't from me. I couldn't feel the floor and the nothingness was all around me. I floated inside it, sobbing. "Why are you crying?" "Because I am dying and afraid." "What is dying?" "The end of life. Of existence." "What is... life?"

“Hey, Sonm!” Affogato grinned as the Necromancer stepped into his cafe. He’d been wary at first of having another Necromancer as a regular customer but the other Mirror seemed to be perfectly kind. “I understand more than you realize - my friends.” He shook his head, tired suddenly. Affo went on. “My friends. Many of them-”

He frowned, swaying slightly with exhaustion. “Didn’t-” There was something in his body, the powers he rarely used tingled awake to warn him too late. Still, he pushed back, trying to dismiss the illness surging through him.

“Why?” He asked, eyes heavy.

“Because you’re pathetic. Like my brother. Unlike him, you can be reeducated.” The last thing he saw was Somn's gleaming smile

Day 22:

Plague

Haemon

Doctor Petrichor says he can cure me. Bring me back from being a lich. I have to believe him and not the cold voice in my head. It sounds like me you know. If my voice was icy and infinitely bored.

Day 27:

Rot

Petrichor

I am her most devout servant, and PlagueBringer has blessed me. She has given me this world as my laboratory and seen fit to grant me a powerful patron who funds my studies. It is clear to me the Mother loves me. She who is the hollowness at the heart of rot wants me to find a cure for the weakness of dragonkind.

And my work is for her, a child her own. To make Sorneith strong. Powerful by our continued survival and our ability to overcome. One day there will be no more Ghouls, no more Wraiths, no more Lichs. We will overcome.

Day 28:

Horror

I was so hot, burning from the inside out. I knew I was dying. I had been a healer for years, working to help my clan survive.

"Why are you crying?"

"Because I am dying and afraid."

"What is dying?"

"The end of life. Of existence."

"What is... life?"

"Good Morning, Necromancer." The two worked in silence together, Kiko the Necromancer daughter of Outfit Vector, of Kishna and Kobari high Necromancers with loud voices on the council couldn't find the words to bridge this gap. Across from her was Extolla, mate of Ragrak, her father's vicious tongued Neutralized Ghoul servant. She had learned quickly how to dodge his anger as a child - at least until she had been sent away for training. Now they were both here at Kitesong Colleguim. A world away from the cruelties of Outfit Vector and still Kiko didn't know what to say to the Skydancer. In the end it was Extolla who spoke first. She broke off a calendula marigold, it's petals a brilliant orange. "Here, Kiko. This has many medicinal properties. You might find it useful." Kiko took it and tucked it into her cloak. Extolla put one into her feathered crest with a small smile. "I can't speak for him but I want to try. After all, you reap what you sow. I want to sow kindness. Lets have some tea after this?" Kiko smiled back."Yes, I'd love to. Will you tell me more about the marigolds?" Such corruption leaked into my sea!
In my confusion, she broke through the fence.
O; she was patient and sat on my line!
A turning of tide... Was she the prey or the hunter?
