I don't mind the more mature themes, hell, I would an adult scooby show that kept the spirt of the original, but this one is just a vessel for hatewatchign and d-tier Dougwalkersqe YouTube "essays" ugghhhh
A quick sidenote; it's certainly fine to dislike a thing, but let's try and keep thoughts on the show constructive and spelled out rather than just "I hate it"; otherwise the thread finds itself less a discussion and more a series of vents.

i watched the first episode and yeah. not my cup of tea. it just felt all over the place. i'll admit that i chuckled at a couple of points but that's about it. the next episodes get a bit better but it's definitely not my type of show. there's a lot of points where i just feel like the commentary is forced and the writers are trying way too hard.
there's nothing wrong with scooby doo going in a more mature route. mystery incorporated did something similar and look at how well that show was received! i just think that the way velma handles it...isn't great? especially when it's a show about a bunch of highschoolers. idk, it just rubs me the wrong way at some points.
the only thing i really like about the show is the style and background work. there's definitely a lot of inspiration taken from mystery incorporated and it shows in the scenery. it's really good! the style of the characters is nice too and definitely stick out in a ocean of adult shows trying their hardest to be the next family guy.
that being said, they did fred dirty. that is not the fred i know.

From what I've heard it is an absolute mauling of a beloved cartoon.

Now this point is a personal thing - I strongly dislike inappropriate humour, but they also did a huge disservice to basically all of the characters. Or at least that's what I've gathered from clips. I am going to avoid that like...uhhhh...social interactions irl.
It's edgy humour done "BAD". Like...how do you take something that hysterical and make it actually offensive. Edgy humour is not supposed to be that, anyone who does that and makes it properly offensive is doing the exact opposite of what it's supposed to do. Or maybe I'm misinformed and edgy humour is supposed to hurt? Idk, I like The Amazing World of Gumball and it's full of edgy humour but it's lighthearted and it's based on equally making fun of everyone but never being offensive. Edgy humour [i]is[/i] supposed to make fun of horrible takes but this show appears to make fun of good takes.
Also, TERFs are a huge no from me, no thanks.

There is nothing constructive that can be said about this. It's horrible and just spitting on millions of people's childhoods. This dumpster fire had better not kill Scooby-doo as a franchise

From the reviews I've heard of it, Mindy Kaling DID like the franchise and actually heavily related to Velma because she was a "nerdy girl with thick glasses" like Velma; and honestly? I think that's part of the problem, because the more you watch the show, the more obvious it is that the main character is a self-insert for Mindy Kaling (who is also her voice actor) and the longer the show goes on, the less likely it seems that Velma is going to have a character redemption arc.
The latest review I watched of it pointed out how, in these latest two episodes, multiple characters of the main cast are somehow into Velma despite the [i]atrocious[/i] things she has done to them. The three that were mentioned were:
- Fred is into her despite the fact that she humiliated him during the trial where he was falsely convicted (I don't know if she's the reason he was convicted or not, but I assume so)
- Daphne is into her despite the fact that Velma [i]attacked her with a crowbar[/i] and saying "guess I didn't try hard enough" when it's pointed out that Velma almost killed her. [i]and for some reason[/i] Velma seem to like Daphne as well despite the fact that Daphne blackmailed Velma into selling drugs for her.
- Norvil (The Shaggy character) likes her for...some reason that we're not told and tries to emulate whatever Velma likes about Daphne so that she'll like him.
So...of the scooby-doo gang...you have Velma as the MC and 3 out of the other 4 main cast is "in love" with her.
Thats not even touching on the fact that, apparently, these latest two episodes sexualizes 15 year old girls by having them attempt to seduce Velma so that they can be put on some list that will grant them a police escort because they're "hot" and need to be protected from the killer.
