actually my 5yo and 3yo name all the ones I have difficulty with, they also pick out their familiars if given half a chance
Here are my 3 common methods:
- Look at mythology! Ever wonder why so many fictional characters hare names with characters from Greek/Roman/Egyptian mythos? It’s cause they’re memorable and have meaning behind them. If I have an orange dragon, I might look up a list of solar deities and see if any fit my dragon well. However, whilst doing this it is also important to be aware and respectful of other cultures. I wouldn’t recommend naming a dragon after a mythological figure who is still widely believed in today, for obvious reasons
- Take a major theme/word that dragon reminds you of (sun, hubris, shadow), then mess around with that word a bit. Perhaps find the translation in Latin? Or, if the dragon reminds you of an animal, maybe find that animal’s scientific name and take part of that? A good example is a dragon that reminds you of phosphorus, being called Phorius. It’s taken from the original word but messed around a little
- Finally, look up something like “Vampire name generator” or “Dragon name generator” or whatever aesthetic of name you want, and just refresh until you get some good ideas. Often, the FR name generator is pretty good too.

I'm back again yay
Any names for this one? His current name is Orca but if anyone has any better ideas then I'd love to hear them.
Something to do with the stars/space/astrology/Arcane would be preferred since his subspecies is star-related and his lore ties into that.

pro tips:
- if you add a message to a CR then decline it, the person who you're trading with CAN'T see the message | - editing a post DOES NOT re-ping any pings in the post. you have to remove the pings, submit, then add them back in. |
@DriftingDreams If you want to make it less obvious, Tolkien in his obsessive linguist hobbyism said that all the names he used in his books were translations anyway. As an example Bilbo was 'originally' Bilba but that would sound too female to us. And 'Smeagol' and 'Smaug' are made to evoke 'snake' or 'slither,' but in the relevant one of his languages 'slither' started with T. Or something like that, the details are typically over-complex. So Smaug was 'really' Tragu and Smeagol was Trahald.
So you could always call him Trahald and 99.9 percent of people would never know.

@ChangelingChilde That’s a good idea! I’ll put it down in the name list.

Oh hey, the baby's asexual! I'm immediately thinking of asexual characters in media, such as Rorschach from DC, Lilith from Owl House, Entrapta from She-Ra, Katniss from the Hunger Games, Hiro from Big Hero 6. Or, if you want something detached from media, they look like an M name.

I like to use mythological names or real life names from various cultures. Sometimes I look to plants and nature as well. I think the reason why a lot of the naming posts don't get much traction is because its hard to suggest a name that fits someone's style.
