DAEDALUS
very annoyed automaton
HISTORICAL RECORD
Daedalus is a historic figure from ancient times, credited with inventing some of the most influential machinery of all time: the steam engine, various locomotives, and the electromagnetic generator. He is responsible for the fire and lightning flights becoming the powerhouses they are today.

Despite his huge contributions to dragonkind, little is known about the creator. Much of his life is speculation or folklore, rather than fact. The only solid information had on him is his flight - Fire - and his machine blueprints. Even the name "Daedalus" is suspected to be an alias.

The most well-known legend is that, before he died, he built an automaton to contain his soul and magic so he would be immortal. No historical evidence supports this story and it is likely fictional.

  • SUMMARY
- actually did preserve his mind in a dragon-like robot armour mech suit thing!!
- issue: it needs magic to run, and a lot at that, so it has been on “low power” mode for thousands of years, awaiting fuel
- got revived by Viper who found his body in the library’s archives. He was put with some blueprints/inventions of his, the person that put him there thinking he was just another device made by him. When Viper tried to investigate him for classification purposes, he accidentally breathed some of his magic into him and made him turn on
- Daedalus now works at the library
- hates being an archival assistant but he feels indebted to Viper and needs to research the modern world anyway, where better than a library? Once he has spent enough years here, he will leave
- is annoyed at everything constantly. Always making sarcastic remarks. Even if his glass eyes didn’t look perpetually angry by design, he’d always look angry anyway
- makes up for this by being literally the best inventor ever. Is fascinated by modern technology and once he gets the hang of it will cause a SECOND Industrial Revolution
- is ran by steam/magic so has fire coming out of him constantly. His eyes are the worst offender but even the bits between plates and his nostrils have sparks too

70101593p.png ”I must admit that this wasn’t quite what I was expecting when I woke up, but there could be far worse places. I’m in a library, which is fine, at least I can catch up on all the things I’ve missed over thousands of years. They’ve even kept some of my old work, which is nice.

The dragon responsible for reviving me is… well, I am grateful, even if he is... not my favourite. I’ll be working as an ‘archival assistant’ for the time being, which sounds awfully boring, but it gives me an excuse to look through records, or something. Apparently, my primary mission is to sort through some of the unorganised files, analysing and classifying them. Whatever, I’d better get to work.”

Eclipse prodded the mechanical figure. Waited a moment. Then prodded again.

"Are you sure this is the right place?" Oilslick said, breaking the uneasy silence. He glanced around the ancient cellar: centuries-old maps, blueprints and tools hung on the walls. The air was so thick with dust that he could taste it on his tongue – musty and dry. Mildew and fungus sheltered in the darkness, confused by the sudden intrusion.

"I'm sure; the Goddess sent me a vision." She replied confidently, waiting a moment before poking the machinery once more.

Oilslick watched Legendary stiffen at 'Goddess'. He had tried to figure out Eclipse's cryptic references to goddesses and sisters, but she refused to explain in detail. He guessed that Legendary knew something about it but she seemed reluctant to share. Suddenly, Sisyphus emerged out of the darkness, antiques and trinkets overflowing from his pockets.

“You should have visions more often!” The bogsneak grinned, showing off his collection of items, “I can sell this stuff for a fortune!”

Oilslick blinked, “You should really put those back.”

“Quiet.” Eclipse demanded, fiddling with the automation. Instantly, the silence returned. She placed her claws either side of a hole on the back of the spine, “I think it needs fuel. Legendary, can you infuse some of your magic into this?”

The amalgamation slithered over, carefully taking the machinery from Eclipse’s hands and breathing energy into the mechanism. All of a sudden, a shudder spread through the automation, causing Legendary and Eclipse to jump back. All four dragons stared with wide eyes as the robot got to its feet.

“Finally! Took you guys long enough!” The mirror stretched, cogs turning and steam pumping out of his mechanical limbs. His voice was rusty and croaky and his movements stiff, but he was alive, alright. He glanced at his rescuers, “I was expecting a more prestigious group to save me, but you lot will do. Tell me, how long has it been? 50 years? 60?”

Oilslick cringed, not wanting to tell Daedalus the bad news, “A lot more than that, I’m afraid to say.”

“What do you mean?” He narrowed his eyes.

Legendary fake-coughed, “Oh, just about... 500 years?”
