I have always pronounced it as "gow-lers" because... well, that's how "gao" is pronounced in Chinese and Japanese. How in the flying squirrel does it turn into "jail-ers". Like I get it, it's a pun, haha funny. But it doesn't make any dang sense, lol.

Same here. I understand on an academic level how it's a quirk of old English vs modern English, but it also being spelled like the onomatopoeic word for monster roars, and it being a more monstrous sort of dragon... I just can't get my brain to read it 'correctly.'
