Lore
“'She didn’t know we survived!' they cried. The Aberrations, our Ancient kin, emerging from the Wyrmwound with blasphemy on their lips.
‘She didn’t know,’… could it be true? Certainly, none of us did. We, Her Chosen.
Can you imagine the Shade’s choice that faced us then? The impossibility of professing our Goddess was fallible, ignorant, or to instead admit She knew but kept Her Left Hand in darkness? It was a cataclysm within our ranks. Were we forsaken? Were we supplanted?
Necromancers fled to the Council’s tower, seeking guidance and filling its halls with their questions. The Councilors themselves were hardly any better, their ceremonial robes rank with such fear and doubt that you could taste it. They locked themselves away, deliberating. Hiding. Those without Standing massed, silent, beyond the Council doors.
The first Aberration was summoned – invited with all honors, they said – and they were… not what we expected. A force, yes, a survivor to make Mother proud. But simple. Uncomplicated. Their motivations were worn like a soldier’s badge, clear for all to see.
Of course, we know now that there are devious ones among them; politicians fit to carry out the most complicated of intrigues. But the first ones were not that, and the Council quickly realized the greatest of all calamities might yet be turned to opportunity. The Aberrations were strong, terrifyingly strong, able to withstand the waters of the Wrymwound itself. But they were also malleable. They were looking for guidance.
And we, Mother’s Left Hand, are only too willing to guide."

It was perhaps not surprising that the ways of Mother's Ancient so closely matched the ways of Her Necromancers. Both sought to test themselves at the Wyrmwound, but where one perched on the rim for 23 days and nights, the other threw themselves into the roiling waters of the Cauldron itself. No modern breed could survive such a test, and the first Aberrations were greeted with a mixture of awe and dread.
But for all their strength, it soon became clear that the Aberrations were limited in other ways. They couldn't speak to the Mother, and they couldn't control their plague. Learning that these skills were possessed by their Necromantic kin, many Aberrations were eager to test themselves in the modern way; a way that called for patience, dedication, and deep thought. The first group of Aberrations assembled on the rim, on land that had succorred them for a lifetime and their ancestors for an Age. They sat to take their Trials, and nearly all of them failed.
They became Wraiths and Ghouls. They couldn't hold their meditations or keep their seats. They became distracted and sought other, more immediate goals. They could survive but they could not endure.
But then something unprecedented happened. These failures, these rejected, they took the Trials again.
And more of them passed.
It was yet another blow to Truths that the Council had long held immutable. You tested yourself, you passed or you failed, and you walked the path that you had been given. Except, it seemed, it was not so.
Hearing of the Aberration Miracle, modern Ghouls and Wraiths returned to the Rotrock Rim. They perished to the last dragon. Their weakened bodies couldn’t withstand the deprivations and hardships of yet another Trial. They simply were not strong enough. The Aberrations were strong, stronger than it seemed to be possible.
Aberration Ghouls, rotted through with plague, didn’t weaken and didn’t lose themselves. They carried on, hardly hampered by their affliction, spreading plague and possessed of whatever faculties they’d been able to claim before their Trials. More and more became Necromancers, though some seemed satisfied with the life of a Ghoul, or a Wraith, or a Servus. Some Ghouls allowed themselves to be Neutralized. Some Neutralized themselves in the waters of the Wrymwound; yet another blasphemy that modern Necromancers had to accept as new Truth.
The Council hesitantly welcomed their new, Ancient colleagues. Perches were placed for them in the Tower. Not many of them chose to take them, preferring more active quests over the endless debating and philosophizing of the Council. They wished to know what came next. What was the next Trial? Learning that there was no more, that they had already passed the final hurdle, the Ancient Necromancers’ laughed and their laughter echoed from the battlements to the pit. They returned to the Rotrock Rim. And they took the Trials again.
They took the Trials again.
Impossibly, some failed. Equally impossibly, some passed, and rose up from their seats with new stripes, new abilities, new plague. The Era of the Aberration had begun, sweeping all that had come before it into the Wrymwound from which they’d emerged.
So it was that Mother reminded us that stagnation is death; that we must struggle, strive, adapt. Her ways are the changing ways. We change with them, or we perish.

Breed Standards
These primary breed standards apply to those Aberrations who have only attempted the Trial a single time. Their markings and coloration are most similar to their modern breed counterparts. Necromancers and Necroservi possess only one set of plague stripes and one trademark plague strain to call their own. Wraiths, Ghouls, and Neutralized Ghouls also only have stripes from a single strain of infecting plague. Lichs possess more gene options due to the corrupting influence of the Shade, but before making their bargain they also only attempted the Trials a single time.

These Necromancers passed their Trials after a single attempt. Many remain proud of this accomplishment and choose not to take the Trials again, preferring to stand apart from their brethren and show off a more classical Necromancer appearance. Rumors persist that some of these Aberrations are the result of modern Necromancers who snuck away to test themselves a second time, only to emerge an entirely different breed. Necromancers who stand sentry over the Trial Grounds warn that some untested dragons have also attempted the Trials and changed before their eyes, as if pushed by Mother into a higher level of evolution.

Aberration Servi are incredibly rare. After coming so close to success the vast majority of Aberrations will choose to test themselves again rather than settle for what some consider to be second place. The ones who do choose to remain Servi most often do so because they don't care to sit for another 23 days and nights, perhaps thinking they'll come back to it eventually, or else deciding to abandon a Necromantic career all together to pursue other ambitions. Aberration Servi who fulfill the traditional roles of a Servus to a Necromancer are almost unheard of.

Aberration Ghouls have the least in common with their modern Necromantic counterparts. Despite being riddled with infectious plague and flesh-eating disease, these dragons barely seem bothered and show no sign of the slow decline that marks a modern Ghoul's progress toward their inevitable madness and demise. Many will swim in the Wrymwound if their plague grows too troublesome, emerging with surprising colors and patterns as their plague mutates, or sometimes even managing to fully Neutralize themselves. To reflect this, the color range of Aberration Ghouls has been extended compared to Modern Ghouls, and more gene options added.

The never-ending pursuit of becoming stronger can lead Aberrations down dark paths. They are no less susceptible to the coaxing promises of the Shade than their Modern brethren. An Aberration so swayed will become a Lich, and a valuable prize for the Shade that conquered them. Here their strength becomes their weakness, and the parasitic Shade will devour their vibrant life force with greedy disregard of other aims. Aberration Lichs rarely survive for long. They darken quickly, and can become empty shells within months of making their bargain. Aberrations who choose this path tend to do so out of desperation, or ignorance.

Necromancers
These Necromancers passed their Trials after a single attempt. Many remain proud of this accomplishment and choose not to take the Trials again, preferring to stand apart from their brethren and show off a more classical Necromancer appearance. Rumors persist that some of these Aberrations are the result of modern Necromancers who snuck away to test themselves a second time, only to emerge an entirely different breed. Necromancers who stand sentry over the Trial Grounds warn that some untested dragons have also attempted the Trials and changed before their eyes, as if pushed by Mother into a higher level of evolution.

Necroservi
Aberration Servi are incredibly rare. After coming so close to success the vast majority of Aberrations will choose to test themselves again rather than settle for what some consider to be second place. The ones who do choose to remain Servi most often do so because they don't care to sit for another 23 days and nights, perhaps thinking they'll come back to it eventually, or else deciding to abandon a Necromantic career all together to pursue other ambitions. Aberration Servi who fulfill the traditional roles of a Servus to a Necromancer are almost unheard of.

Ghouls

Aberrant Aberrations have attempted the Trials at least twice but likely more. They are a patchwork of plague, with Necromantic stripes criss-crossing their body, a different set for each Trial they've attempted. Transforming from Ghoul to Necromancer to Wraith and any variation in between, their genes capture a riot of color that results from these strains of plague mixing with each other and with the waters of the Wrymwound. The below genes are in addition to those found in Variants that have only attempted the Trials once. This means that, within a Variation, an Aberration can have any mix of primary and secondary genes and a single Aberrant gene will qualify them as an Aberrant Aberration. Color ranges are the same, with no changes made. Visually, Aberrant Lichs are a mixture of Necromancer and Ghoul genes, a reflection of their complicated background. The experience and resiliency they've gained through enduring multiple Trials often translates to increased resiliency in withstanding the Shade, and they will retain their colors longer than the Lichs who have only taken the Trials a single time. Of all the Variants, the Aberrant Lichs often possess a particularly complex history. They have walked a difficult path, and are approaching an even more difficult fate.
