Gaolers have had few problems assimilating into the ranks of the Necromancers despite being cloistered from the rest of dragonkind for years. While the finer subtleties of cutthroat court politics may escape them, Gaoers are no stranger to working in an assembly. Fellow Necromancers are quickly finding Gaolers to be straightforward and stubborn; an advocating Gaoler is a force to be reckoned with. A Gaolers’ sheer strength and durability make them invaluable allies and truly intimidating rivals. Their keen sense of smell enables them to sniff out even the smallest traces of the Shade-touched. This makes them extremely adept at ferreting out Lichs and their ilk from the Council’s ranks. In many Gaolers' opinion, the Shade exists as a being that threatens the natural order of life on Sornieth, therefore it must be overcome, contained, and if possible, eradicated. As a species, Gaolers have little patience for the weak or inept, making them rather apt students of the Plaguemother’s teachings. Despite this, the introduction of Gaolers into the Necromanctic Council has not been universally well-received by their modern counterparts. Some Necromancers question whether a Gaoler can truly be a devoted servant to the Mother's cause. Their split loyalty to the Icewarden and Plaguebringer has stirred up more than a few tense debates in the Council's halls. Those Gaolers who elect to undergo the rites of the Necromantic Trial often do so to test their resolve and strengthen themselves; after all, a weak warden can protect naught. Gaining the blessing of the Plaugebringer proves that the Gaoler has both the strength to endure and the ability to adapt to their rapidly changing world. Undertaking the Trials has proven to be controversial among the more traditional members of the ancient Gaoler Assembly, but in the battle against the Shade, no advantage can be overlooked. Members of the Seeker and Sentry orders are the most likely to attempt the Trials as their duties take them outside and away from the frigid gaols. Keepers, Overseers, and Sentinels looking to gain more tools to aid them in their endless watch over their Shade-touched prisoners may also attempt to gain the Mother’s favor. Traitors of the highest order to both Necromancer and Gaoler-kind alike, a Gaoler who chooses to bargain with the Shade paints a bold target on their back. Gaoler Lichs struggle to escape the sensitive noses of their fellow Gaolers and, as a result, often cannot blend in with the Council even if their marks have not yet darkened. Some may choose to cooperate with other Lichs to achieve their goals, others bargain with the Shade for increasing amounts of power so they may strike out on their own. Whether attempting to use the Shade’s power for noble or selfish purposes, life for a Gaoler Lich is often one of isolation. A Gaoler Lich is a much sought after prize for the Shade, as ensnaring a dragon specifically created to contain it presents a certain ironic victory. Some suspect that the ultimate aim of the Shade may well be to drain and use these puppet Lichs to free its imprisoned brethren from the Fortress of Ends. Lichs

Rumors and unconfirmed sightings of these most foul abominations have begun circulating in the Council’s halls. While no one has yet been able to produce a specimen, rumors alone have been enough to generate a great deal of concern amongst the Necromantic Council.

These creatures are thought to be Lichs who have had their magic completely consumed by the Shade. Only the smallest traces of their elemental magic remains, if any remains at all, rendering these individuals little more than a vessel to the Shade. They are marked by their dark coats and the bizarre, otherworldly spiked fans that sprout from their spines and throats - further emphasizing their alien nature.

Rumor has it they no longer speak. At least, they no longer speak a language any dragon could hope to understand. Loners and groups of two or three have supposedly been sighted in the Abiding Boneyard, whistling and shrieking in pitches nearly too sharp for a dragon’s ears to perceive. The moment one senses another dragon, they all disperse into the wastes as if operating on one hivemind. Their numbers and goals are anyone’s guess, but one thing’s for certain - if they do exist, they pose an extreme danger to all dragon-kind.
