Envy had another nest to watch over.
Her own. Mordecai had gladly watched it while Envy guarded Aquaris’s. But he didn’t just hastily agree because he wished to please his captor.
No, he had a plan. And so the next day when Envy was reprimanded by Aquaris, while she sought to pour out her rage at Mordecai, he was gone. She waited for him, and when he came back, she expressed her displeasure, keeping him away from the nest for just the right amount of time.
When Envy accompanied him back, the eggs
were gone. She let out an angered scream, but she couldn’t fault him.
At night, Mordecai retrieved the trembling eggs from their hiding spot — they were about to hatch. He darted through the thick trees and set up a signal with scraps of red cloth, nestling the eggs beneath.
It wasn’t Psyche who found the eggs, but her Obelisk friend, who was roaming in the region. He picked up the eggs and slunk off, wondering who placed them there and why.
Only when they hatched the next day did Psyche remark how much the last looked like Envy.
So that was why! And Psyche would be willing to bet it was Mordecai who’d set the eggs there.
Perfect. In time, Psyche would see about freeing the Pearlcatcher … hopefully.
