COLOUR OUT OF SPACE

On the borders of the Viridian Labyrinth, a meteor from outer space crash landed and unleashed a parasitic lifeform. While the impact itself did not harm the creature, it was clearly in a weakened state when it arrived on Sornieth (some speculate this reason caused the thing to crash in the first place).

The creature quickly assimilated into one of the water sources of the Nature territories and began to consume the energy from the abundant greenery. Impacted plants would grow in unnatural size and color before crumbling into ash. Larger living things, such as trees or dragons, often glowed faintly for months before perishing. After a year of gathering strength, the creature was able to propel itself back into space, leaving a blighted area in its wake.

In appearance, this creature was most referred to by its "strange colors" beyond the spectrum of normally visible light. It has no physical body on our dimension, so its shape was compared to smoke or "globules" by the few who saw it.

CTHULHU

While Cthulhu is the most common spelling, his name is unpronounceable by dragonkind, leaving many to simply call him "The Dreamer." He communicates through telepathy, and he can reach introspective dragons through their dreams.

While he looks more draconic than most Great Old Ones, he is almost as large as a mountain. He has leathery wings, a scaly body, and a slimy head with tentacles like an octopus or squid. His green skin is appears to be rubbery, and he has massive claws on his paws.

Cthulhu became stranded in Sornieth when it moved too far away for him to reach other galaxies. He and his spawn fought against the resident Other Gods and Elder Things, regenerating too quickly to be killed. However, the war was ended when R'lyeh sank beneath the ocean. Cthulhu bides his time in his sunken temple, waiting for the stars to realign so he can escape.

This place is known as "Dreamland," since some dragons are born with the innate ability to reach it in their sleep. These "dreamers" can enhance their skill through practice or sleeping potions. In contrast, they can also repress this talent if they do not exercise it often enough. Dreamland contains many places that used to exist in Sornieth but somehow slipped through to this other dimension. DREAMERS

For dragons that seek knowledge from beyond without suffering madness (or learning geometry), the safest starting point is the well-documented dimension parallel to Sornieth.

Dreamers seeking weirder mysteries can find the "gates" in Dreamland that open to further dimensions. To move to the next dimension, the dragon must discover the correct "key," which is usually mental but can sometimes have physical manifestations. Because of the ever-increasing complexity and danger of these dimensions, almost all dragons who attempt this process will go mad or die long before they can find the Yog-Sothoth and the final gate.

DOOM

When dragons first arrived at the Sea of a Thousand Currents, the area was occupied by a race of green amphibious beastclan. Although mute, these creatures attempted to communicate that they were peaceful and were willing to share the Sea with dragonkind. However, dragons were repulsed by their flabby bodies and their heretical worship of Bokrug (a "false" water-lizard diety). Dragons hunted these creatures to extinction and looted their possessions. Only one dragon in the entire settlement seemed to have protested this genocide, and he prophesied about the downfall of the murderers.

Dragons ignored this warning and quickly became rich off of the bountiful land. However, on the anniversary of the slaughter, a mist rose up from the Sea and changed the murderers into the very creatures that they had murdered. New dragons refused to settle the region for many years afterwards. While it is commonly believed that the Tidelord punished his people for refusing to hear his follower's prophecy, dragons are still careful to show respect to any statues of Bokrug when they find them.

Essential salts are best kept in neatly labeled, clear glass jars. Use with extreme caution; while not harmful in itself, summoning the wrong dragon or beastclan could prove lethal if not well prepared. For the same reasons, it is best to hide the necessary spells in a separate place, or else an unassuming clan mate might accidentally bring back something that ought to stay dead. ----- [i]Suggested Readings:The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, Through the Gates of the Silver Key, The Dunwich Horror[/columns] ----- [columns][nextcol][outfit=1020881][nextcol][/columns] -----
----- [i]“ As I told you longe ago, do not calle up That which you can not put downe; either from dead Saltes or out of ye Spheres beyond. ESSENTIAL SALTES

Rest assured that essential salts are much more nefarious than essential oils. This substance is made out of ashes and grave dust, distilled by alchemy into its most "essential" bits.

ETIENNE ROULET

While the Hewn City fascinates Light dragons, there is one lair that is always avoided. It is not feared for its darkness; instead, it houses a monster alternately described as "vampire," a "werewolf," or a "ghost."

Etienne Roulet and his family fled after his father was arrested for murders committed while seemingly wearing a Wolf Cape. Seeking anonymity, the Roulets tried to live a normal life in the Hewn City, but they seemed odd enough that they had trouble being accepted into anyone's lair. One day, their terrified neighbors revolted, and the family was never seen again.

However, their legacy lived on, even after their lair was destroyed and built over. Etienne had secretly continued his father's dark studies, allowing his son Paul to merge a monster from beyond. After their deaths, its spirit was free to siphon away the life of any foolish enough to enter. This bodiless creature is tethered to the family's grave, marked by a patch of yellow mold in the shape of a dragon, found deep in their lair.

THE FATE OF KALOS

Hidden among the other ancient structures of the Sunbeam Ruins, there is a lone tomb surrounded by an olive grove. Local residents avoid the area because of a dragon-shaped tree, although very few know the sad story of jealousy and revenge.

Once, there were unlikely best friends: Musides the friendly Plague dragon, and Kalos the quiet Nature dragon. Together, they were the most famous sculptors in Sornieth, and they often helped each other with their work. However, things slowly soured between them during a competition against each other.

When Kalos realized his friend was poisoning him to sabotage his sculpture, Kalos asked an Other God to help him fake his own death and transfer his soul into a tree. Filled with regret, Musides took care of the tree that would be his own doom. Kalos refused to forgive Musides. Instead, he waited for a storm to disguise his revenge: he smashed their old lair to bits, killing his friend and destroying all of their sculptures. As punishment, the Gladeskeeper refused to change Kalos back.

----- [i]Suggested Readings: The Tree, The Doom that Came to Sarnath, The Outsider, Hypnos, Polaris[/columns]

FROM BEYOND

There are other dimensions than what Sornieth's inhabitants can normally see. Dragons who are inclined to be deep thinkers have a chance at viewing these other realities. Dreamers, mathematicians, and antiquarians have all successfully peered beyond the normal limits of dragon experience.

These glimpses into the other, however, permanently change them. They are faced with the fact that dragons are only a small, insignificant portion of a vast universe. This fact might not have been so overwhelming if the discoverers were not thrown into the paths of the horrible, powerful creatures that live in the other dimensions.

If the dragons are brave enough, there are several ways of seeing things from beyond. One dragon built a machine that could unlock a part of the viewer's brain, although this machine was destroyed. Sight might be granted by one of the Other Gods, or it might be revealed by physically travelling to another plane.

What the Moon Brings

Oytm1KC.gif
GIBBOUS

Cosmic alignments play an important part in the rituals and travels of the worlds Beyond. Those new to esoterica should study the localized importance of lunar phases.

The full moon can reveal secrets and lost histories, but faint moonlight allows beings and things to pass as "normal" when they would normally be shunned as other. Unease felt during a waning gibbous moon is often a sign that something evil was preparing itself for the new moon, when most documented rituals are set.

The moon is heavily associated with Dreamland (both because the same moon seems to be present in both Sornieth and Dreamland, and also because the moon is synonymous to nighttime and sleep). The Cats of Ulthar have reluctantly admitted that they play on the moon at night; they have often met Nyarlatotep's minions who use the shadowed side of the moon as a trade outpost.

GHOULS

Ghouls are nocturnal creatures with rubbery skin and hunched gaits. Their vaguely draconic anatomy is not coincidental; a well-documented case in recent years suggests that a local artist in the Hewn City has "transformed" into a ghoul. At this time, it is unclear whether a ritual was involved, or whether all ghouls began their lives in forms identical to dragonkind.

This association is disturbing, as ghouls are best known for desecrating graveyards to consume the corpses of fallen dragons. They will only eat decomposing meat. If trapped in a confrontation, they will wield any nearby item as a weapon (usually tombstones). However, they prefer to avoid detection or to escape Sornieth through their tunnels into Dreamland.

Their language has been described as "meeping" or "glibbering." They seem incapable of making the same sounds as dragons, although they may try to communicate through grunts or gestures.
