Past found that, with the proper bribes, Shadow denizens were more than willing to share their expertise on the things that go bump in the night.
By combining Light's analytical nature and Shadow's understanding of the darkness, they began to make startling discoveries. Word spread across the occult community, slowly attracting more and more curious parties. COMMON TERMS
Antiquarian
Someone interested in the very distant past, before dragonkind inhabited Sornieth. Compare to Historian and Dreamer. Can also be used as an adjective. See entry Antiquarians.
Beyond
A catch-all term for things on higher planes and other dimensions that are incomprehensible to dragons ("beyond" their understanding). See entry From Beyond.
Cosmic Horror
A subgenre that deals with the fear of the unknown and unintelligible. Often focuses on the vastness of the universe, which renders life insignificant and meaningless in comparison. Threats of this kind cannot be considered "evil" since they have intent to harm; instead, they cause destruction passively as a byproduct of a goal completely unrelated to dragonkind. A good example would be Cthulhu.
[Author's note: Unfortunately, fear of the unknown is often tied to prejudice, which is unacceptable. I will not deny Lovecraft's racism, but I also will not forgive it. As such, I have heavily reimagined many of Lovecraft's stories when I place them in Sornieth. Please be mindful if you read any of the original texts.]
The Dream Cycle
Stories set in Dreamland. Many of these early works are not cosmic horror - many are moralistic, and some are even playful.
Dreamer
Creative types with the natural ability to access other worlds. To be a true dreamer, they must be able to access at least as far as Dreamland without any external aid (although they might use drugs or tools to delve into more distant dimensions). See entry Dreamers. Dreamers are particularly vulnerable to the influence of Cthulhu.
Note: While a dragon can be both a dreamer and an antiquarian, the terms are not interchangeable. It is possible to be one and not the other.
Dreamland
An alternate but parallel dimension to Sornieth. It is named such because it is the popular destination of dreamers, especially since both dimensions have a shared history up to a certain point. It is debated whether dreamers brought the influence of these events with them, or whether Dreamland is a pocket dimension created by Sornieth's gods to gain privacy from their creation.

They also may be called Old Ones - not to be confused with Great Old Ones.
The Great Old Ones
Extraterrestrial, extradimensional beings with powers far greater than Sornieth's gods. Dragons physically cannot "see" the Great Old Ones, much less understand them - they exist on higher planes across the vastness of the universe. In return, most Great Old Ones ignore Sornieth due to its insignificance.

Called "the Land of Hope," it is filled with sweet music, bejeweled architecture, and flourishing scenery. No dragon has ever seen it, but many have died trying. It is possible that the paradise was made up to lure Dreamers to their doom. Stubborn dragons search for it, anyway, by following the [url=https://www1.flightrising.com/dressing/outfit/1207742][color=#FFB577]bright blue bird[/color][/url] that seems to beckon them.
Carthuria is located in the uncharted waters beyond the Basalt Pillars. To get even that far, one must sail past several islands. The first is the Land of Zar, which traps forgotten dreams. Next is Thalarion, the City of a Thousand Wonders, with streets buried under the skeletons of dead visitors. After this comes Xura, the Land of Pleasures Unattained, which is covered in lush vegetation but smells of rot. Finally, the dreamer must pass the Land of Sona-Nyl, which is perhaps the hardest test. Sona-Nyl is a beautiful land that is completely without time, pain, or death. Weaker-minded (or perhaps wiser) dragons will chose safety and peace over the uncertainty of Carthuria.

CATS OF ULTHAR
Cats play an important part in Dreamland affairs. Curiosity sometimes kills these cats, but in most occasions, they show enough sense to avoid dangerous situations. They tend to be better than dragons are when it comes to sensing the mystical energies of the Other Gods. Even creatures associated with the other Gods, such as the squat creatures of Leng, are repulsive to cats, who would just as soon avoid them entirely.
However, cats are quick to aid their friends, whether it be other cats or even kind dragons. The cat clans will join forces to amass fierce army of fangs and claws, which spells doom even for much larger attackers.
Generally speaking, cats are quiet, solitary creatures. One or two might linger in a kind dragon's lair, and a dreamer might even learn to speak their language. Even then, cats prefer to mind their own business and expect their hosts to do the same. They even keep secret where they often travel at night: the dark side of the moon.
