At a very young age, Caliginous managed to escape EnergyHive and the control of his grandparent, Hydrae. Free to live his own life, they became a librarian in Waterdeep. Caliginous met Coelacanth when she visited his shop. The two felt a connection and eventually became mates. The pair later met Luciferin who also became their mates. All three of them took care of the eggs and adopted several other unhatched eggs into their family.

Caliginous later met Corki, another librarian, but one who specialized in repairing books. The two agreed to merge their businesses and work together as friends.
