Role in Waterdeep: Crestflame Academy

For as long as they could remember, Hydrae had always stood in the spotlight. The only hatchling of aer parents’ first nest to remain at home, they were always rewarded with praise for even the smallest of actions. Eventually, their parents lessened their praise, and Hydrae quickly craved attention once more.

Having inherited natural magical potential from both their parents, developing aer skills seemed like the obvious choice. Even from a young age, Hydrae could influence others around them. It started as simple things, convincing aer parents to let them read for a few more minutes before bedtime, or playing harmless pranks on others, but eventually would grow into almost total control of those ae chose to use their abilities on.

Hydrae’s other major talent lay in their potion-making. After reading their way through almost every available guide on alchemy, aer talents blossomed. Much to Aureole’s dismay, they chose her workshop to test their concoctions, often to mixed results. Some of their stronger potions could even allow glimpses into the future, though any attempts to view their own ended in strange green light.

Everything seemed to be working in Hydrae’s favor, until one fateful afternoon, when their parents delivered two crucial pieces of news: Hydrae’s application into the Crestflame Academy had been accepted and they could start next year, and they would soon be an older sibling, as Auri and Sae were having a second nest.

Once the nest hatched, Hydrae gifted the sibling who’d stayed, a small quiet one named Icterus, a Guinea Pig, aer successful attempt to create life from alchemy. Things remained positive between them, until Icterus spilled a potion on himself, which changed the patterns on his wings. Hydrae was sent away to Crestflame shortly after that. Feeling as if they’d been replaced, ae left their parents' store with feelings of resentment and vowed to excel through the academy to earn back their parent’s love.

During their time at the Academy, Hydrae slowly became obsessed with discovering the true extent of their power. They poured over ancient tomes of arcane knowledge almost all the time, never seeming to take a break to get to know the other students. The only other dragon they had a connection with was a Coatl named Turquoise, who curated flowers for aer potions. Along with studying, Hydrae gained new apparel to match their skills, including a deck of cards turned magical after a poison spill, and a set of Warped Bangles earned from a mind-control experiment.

Their studies took a turn for the worse after Hydrae was nearly killed in an accident of their own making. One of their unstable elixirs had exploded, and they were badly injured. They were rushed to the hospital, where Aureole used her magic to save her child, through a set of Powered Implants, augmented by the health rune Hydrae received from a diviner at a young age.

After a full recovery, they continued their studies and graduated shortly after. At this point, Hydrae realized that they had nothing left to earn from their parents, but could instead be noticed and revered by all of Sornieth. They had enough magical power to bend others' minds to aer will, and could create life itself out of inanimate objects. Why shouldn’t they be adored?

Now truly ready to take flight, Hydrae stole the keys to an expensive apartment and moved in. They used their mind control to take whatever they wanted or felt they deserved and were able to acquire a considerable amount of forbidden knowledge and rumors this way. With these new powers in aer claws, Hydrae began to look down upon other inhabitants of Waterdeep, feeling as if they were nothing but puppets for them to control.

Realizing their true desires were too big to undertake on aer own, Hydrae, with Turquoise’s consent, synthesized hatchlings out of both their feathers, which led to some unforeseen consequences. Of the first nest, Eltanin seemed relatively normal, while Thuban transformed into an Undertide, and later escaped, never to be seen again.

They raised Eltanin in aer image, ambitious and powerful, and allowed xem to join the Shadow Guild developing in Waterdeep, as Eltanin’s divination magic would serve the Guild well. Content with their first nest, Hydrae had three more offspring, who were allowed to wander the world, and ae wrote many award-winning books on alchemy during this time.

Still desiring to be noticed, Hydrae began teaching at the Academy, as it allowed them to continue experimenting and developing their powers. The Academy had an expansive magical library, and connections to leading figures within the city. Despite being one of the most noted alumni of Crestflame, most students live in fear of failing Hydrae’s potions classes, or ending up on aer bad side, which seemed to happen inevitably.

The most interesting thing to happen in a long time though, was one fateful day when a stranger named Amiri dropped a note on aer desk. The note’s author had heard of Hydrae’s talents and wanted their help on a top-secret project. Hydrae gladly accepted this offer, as this was the perfect way for them to advance their own plots as well. For even though they’d always stood in the spotlight, their heart contained only shadows.
