(Another version of Hank)

Their entire body hurts.

That, in itself, isn't something new. Dying usually tended to hurt, as they'd come to find out, but it wasn't anything they couldn't get over. Pain is a motivator. A distraction at worst. Nothing they can't handle.

But this pain, it's... something else, alright.

The Retainer's face is hidden behind its mechanical mask, not showing even the slightest sliver of emotion. Not that Hank expects it to. They don't even think Retainers can show emotion other than anger. If they could, however, Hank would have to guess this one would show satisfaction. Or a malicious grin. Something like that.

Not that Hank particularly cares about that, because really. They're pretty goddamn peeved, alright, spurred on only by the pain in their body, and by the imaginary grin of the Retainer.

Floating in the air, trapped in a beam of something, unable to do anything. Blackened chains wrapped around their limbs, a supernatural force holding them in place.

They can't move. And it hurts.

"Hank[4] STATUS = RETAINED," the Retainer says, its voice mechanical and even despite the claw- and bitemarks on its body. It's covered in blood- Hank's blood, claws still dripping from where it had ripped through their goddamn wing. That's gonna be a pain to repair for Doc, and even more of a pain to work with, and damn it to hell if Hank's gonna let this particular Retainer get away with it. They growl in anger, and the Retainer merely tilts its head, slowly closing its claws.

The pressure and pain spikes in Hank's body, and they stifle the yelp of pain that threatens to leave their throat. Oh, but it hurts, and they can't even dig their claw into the ground to brace themselves, can't pull at the chains. The Retainer's magic digs into their body, lights their senses on fire, and it hurts it hurts it hurts it-

The Retainer's claw releases, and the pain lets up, Hank's body greedily heaving for air as it realizes that, in its distress, it had forgotten to. They don't even need to, they're already dead anyway, but they can't stop it, an instinctive and automatic reaction. They feel weak, and even more dead than they did before.

And yet, they keep their eye on the Retainer, anger smouldering under their skin. They refuse, refuse to give in, even if there's nothing they can do, and they do their absolute damndest to make sure that this Retainer knows. Even if not with words, with every other fiber of their being. They wish their magic worked right now so they could at least light this miserable creature on fire, but alas. A glare will have to do.

The Retainer does not react.

After a moment of their staredown, the Retainer hums, turning around.

"TARGET LOCATED," it drones, lifting off of the ground without even beating its wings, "PROCEEDING TO COORDINATES A.S.A.P."

And just like that, it leaves, dissapearing into the aethers of Purgatory.

Hank is all alone.

They still can't move, and their body still hurts. The chains are tight around their limbs, and the anger boils. They try to thrash, but it is futile. They're stuck.

Well, wherever that Retainer is (and whatever version of them it's facing, let's be real), they hope it bites the dust. They hope it gets beat up so badly it doesn't even remember what Purgatory is, and that it goddamn wishes it were never created.

Not dead, though. No. That, Hank wants to do themselves, whenever they get free.

And get free they will, no doubt about it.

They've still got a clown to beat up, after all.
