Gore & Body Horror Skins & Accents

What's a gore skin or accent?
A gore skin or accent is a skin or accent that features graphic depictions of gore, blood, muscles, pustules, organs, open and/or exuding wounds, decapitation, tendrils, decomposition of flesh, or other body parts that have been retroactively been considered too graphic for the Flight Rising site. Their limited quantity and circulation make them exceedingly rare and highly desirable on-site.

What's a body horror skin or accent?
A body horror skin or accent is a skin or accent that features absurd, fantastical, or less graphic versions of horror elements. Body horror skins are compliant with modern skin and accent rules and are also now the modern successors of gore skins.

A Brief History of Skin & Accent Rule Discretion Changes:
This is a summary of changes made, and in no way challenges the rules of Flight Rising. We comply with the rules of Flight Rising and appreciate the work that the Flight Rising staff have done over the past decade.

October 7, 2014: Developer SuburbanSamurai clarifies and enforces Skin & Accent guidelines with user Wynand. Skins or accents that depict living dragons being tortured/are in immense pain aren't allowed. Skins or accents that depict excessive blood or gore are not allowed. Skins or accents that depict zombies, or, more broadly, reanimated dragons, are allowed. Skins or accents that depict bone structures and/or darkened or dried blood are allowed.

October 8, 2014: Developer SuburbanSamurai, in a follow-up post, explains to users Wynand and Mabeleweasley that skins depicting blood, bones, or other questionable elements are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Skin ID range from this period: #6061 - #6716

November 21, 2014:
Skins or accents that depict living dragons being tortured/are in immense pain aren't allowed. Skins or accents that depict excessive blood or gore are not allowed. Skins with gore in them are still reviewed on a case-by-case basis. An entry for Riot of Rot 2014, "State of Decay," made by user Decay was given a nomination, but was not admitted because of its extremely graphic depiction of decomposition.

Skin ID range from this period: #7308 - #8402

May 14, 2015: Community manager Aequorin re-affirms roleplay, and more broadly, site guidelines on sensitive topics. "Fade to black" inference of suggestive themes is permitted in storylines. Gore within the tone of the site is permitted, but no excessive descriptions or depictions of suffering, torture, or death are allowed.

Skin ID range from this period: #9999 - #10523

October 7, 2015: Developer Undel responds to Decay's request for clarification on the rejection of their skin "Symbiosis," in comparison to their skin "Microcosm (#8705.)" Undel requests that the blood dripping from the mouth of the Pearlcatcher be removed. The blood here is darkened, and, technically, by Developer SuburbanSamurai's standards, seemed to be permissible. This is a landmark moment in Flight Rising staff clarifying and making changes to gore skin guidelines that were once in force from the site's launch to the time of the post.

October 7, 2015: Developer Undel responds to Decay's request for clarification, and formally declares the stance of Flight Rising staff on gory skins and accents. The accent "Microcosm (#8705)" was grandfathered in, or permitted through previous rulings, but, going forward, it would be considered excessive in its depiction of gore on-site, and wouldn't be approved if it had been printed in 2015. Skins depicting scars or blood are still subject to review on a case-by-case basis. Undel announces that the rules on the official Skin & Accent guide will be updated. Intense debate ensued on-site in the aftermath of the announcement.

October 8, 2015:
Developer SuburbanSamurai clarifies to user Pseudoscience that skins and accents depicting scars are still allowed, so long as the wound is not actively bleeding.

October 8, 2015:
User Arazamatazza inquires about the new guidelines relating to gore, based on their previously accepted skin, "Busted Up (#12671)."

October 8, 2015: Developer SuburbanSamurai clarifies that Arazamatazza's skin can be reprinted, and that Flight Rising staff will not retroactively remove previously approved skins. Skins and accents with questionable themes are still approved on a case-by-case basis.

Skin ID range from this period: #14105 - #14678

September 19, 2017: Community manager Aequorin re-affirms site guidelines for art commissioned on the Flight Rising site. Skins are included and considered as a form of art commissioned on the site.

Skin ID range from this period: #23982 - #24257

December 16, 2020: Community manager Aequorin provides a Community update, and answers some Ask the Team questions asked through Flight Rising's Zendesk site. Aequorin responds to a question from a user wanting to create lore for their clan based on a cult performing ritual sacrifices. Aequorin answers, re-affirming site rules. She says that "any reference to violence or injury must be in line with existing Flight Rising lore. Content focused on slavery, child abuse, excessive violence/gore, or communicates intent to commit a real-life act of violence is not allowed. This also includes using dragon names, account names, dragon biographies, clan profiles, clan broadcasts to promote or display information like the above, up to and including real world tragedies, criminals, and genocide." This is the word-for-word policy on violent content on Flight Rising's official Zendesk site, posted on August 23, 2018.

Skin ID range from this period: #32415 - #33160

May 18, 2021:
User priest's accent, "cantus lupus (#39420)," was approved with a bleeding slash. Three days later, the accent was removed for a violation, and skin blueprints were refunded. The slash in question was less bloody than the official site artwork for the Bloody Bandages apparel set, or the Cleaver.

May 21, 2021:
User Pesticide, who later became an official site artist for Flight Rising, provides their thoughts on the increasing censorship of skins.

Skin ID range from this period: #39200 - #39555

June 8, 2021 to July 26, 2021:
User lostcrow talks about their troubleshooting with their skin "rukkehrunruhe (#40710)." Lostcrow shares feedback from developer SuburbanSamurai on the offending areas of their skins. A browner version of the same skin was also rejected. Lostcrow receives further feedback, indicating a remaining offending area. After a few last tweaks, the skin is finally accepted.

Skin ID range from this period: #40072 - #40650

October 11, 2021: Community manager Aequorin clarifies guidelines for Plague and Riot of Rot-themed skins. The Plague flight's main theme is clarified to be centered around survival & evolution, rather than the community interpretation of blood & gore. Zombie or zombie-inspired skins are permitted, provided that no blood or red-hues appear on the skin. Any skins made must conform to site rules & the tone of the site.

October 11, 2021:
Community manager Aequorin clarifies that the color red is permitted in skins, provided that it's not used to depict a dragon suffering via bleeding, wounds, gore, or body horror. Official site art, including the Bloody Bandages set, is offered as a handy reference for ensuring that user-created art is compliant with site rules.

Skin ID range from this period: #41608 - #42008

August 19, 2015 to October 21, 2021:
User Bowno opens a suggestions thread in 2015, to discuss Skin & Accent policies. It runs for a total of 6 years, 2 months, and 2 days before being locked. Moderator Moosesushi expressed support in 2015 for greater clarification regarding gore guidelines. Former official site artist Pesticide also offered their thoughts on the controversy. After further escalation on October 11, 2021 that resulted in posts with severe profanity being removed, community manager Aequorin re-stated and clarified rules regarding Skins & Accents before locking the thread. The color red is permitted. Older, lower ID skins were grandfathered in, under the rules prior to 2016. All skins and accents are approved on a case-by-case basis. Any skin & accent troubleshooting must be done through the Skin & Accent Problems thread, and any and all feedback must be through the Contact Us Zendesk forms.

Skin ID range from this period: #12536 - #42008

April 7, 2022: Community manager Aequorin expands more on new Skin & Accent rules following the announcement on October 21, 2021. Gore is prohibited, and is considered to be bleeding wounds, fresh wounds, discernable organs, and viscera. Healed scars and blood spatter are considered to be generally okay. Existing skins that were previously grandfathered are allowed, but can never be reprinted. LGBTQIA+ skins are permitted and are not political. All skins become in-game items, and can be rejected if they are seen as a liability to the site.

Skin ID range from this period: #44781 - #45193

May 6, 2022: Flight Rising staff further clarify that content related to self-harm, suicide, real-world tragedies, criminals, or genocides are not allowed.

May 6, 2022: Flight Rising staff further reinforce that art commissions that happen on site (of which skins are a part) cannot contain excessive gore, and that all depictions of violence and battle wounds must conform to site rules. The site is rated T for Teen, with players as young as age 13. Requesting or offering commissions of artwork that fall outside of the site's rules is not allowed. If someone over the age of 18 and an account under the age of 18 are found violating the rules, both accounts will be terminated, without appeal, for child safety.

Skin ID range from this period: #45193 - #45778

March 14, 2023:
User batfossil's accents, depicting Skydancers with revolvers for heads (#40623, #40624, #40625) were approved in July 2021. Nearly two years later, Flight Rising staff contacted him to ask him to change the design of his accents, since they were being used as forum icons. Firearms were not grandfathered as a part of gore skins, so, batfossil had the opportunity to edit them.

Skin ID range from this period: #49089 - #49648

April 2, 2023: User batfossil's revolver accents were removed while he was on hiatus, waiting for an opportunity to correct them. It is unknown whether these accents will be allowed again, or if they will be fixed.

Skin ID range from this period: #49648 - #50199

October 26, 2023: Developer Xhaztol provides an update on technical changes to the site, from pinglists, to the skin submissions process, and PVP within the coliseum. The updated skin submission process will check for a skin or accent's image size, correct formatting, if details extend beyond the borders of a pose, and an art coverage percentage estimate. It will also allow a user to decide which part of the skin or accent to focus on, to create the tooltip icon for it. Automated reprints would also be permitted for eligible skins. Some skins that no longer meet site rules, like grandfathered gore skins, are flagged and will not eligible for reprint. Other skins with dubious presentation are also flagged as needing review on a case-by-case basis.

Skin ID range from this period: #52347 - #52758

February 25, 2024: Developer Aequorin provides an update on the site's Terms of Service for Religious Iconography. Players can identify with their religious affiliation, but cannot use religious iconography on skins (existing rule), or anywhere on site (new).

Desecration, destruction, or political speech towards organized religions aren't permitted on-site. Broad themes that have been incorporated into fiction are permissible for discussion and for skin creation. Named angels and/or saints cannot be used on skins. "If the religious image or icon isn't allowed in a skin or accent, it shouldn't be posted on our site."

W O R K I N P R O G R E S S. LAST UPDATED: 31/1/2024.

How many gore skins are there?
Currently compiling, so TBD.

Colors searched:
- Blood
- Sanguine
- Garnet
- Crimson (current, 1/93; working on classifying current skins in the TBD pile.)
GORE LEVELS:

High Body Horror (solid so far)

Moderate Body Horror

Mild Body Horror - Scratches, Blood, Pustules, Realistic Skeletons

Light Body Horror - Definitely To Be Revised

YES, but NEEDS TAGS. CURRENTLY CREATING MILD CATEGORY to SEPARATE FROM LIGHT CATEGORY. All skins are organized by ID number.

Blood splatter type gore vs. body horror? Hmm. Blood splatter is more than the body horror stuff, hm.... but, some are more cartoony than others... hard to classify, honestly.
