Pale green claws and rich, gold paws contrasted sharply with the lifeless gray sands of the Exultant Order's domain. The hatchling's mane stood upright from the static which threatened to crackle into full-blown bursts. He took a deep breath, made sure he had a good grip on his pearl, and then he took off running. His hatchling-weak wings flapped wildly at his sides while he ran, stumbling through deep sand and threat of currents. He was lucky in one regard -- sand wasn't a very good conductor.

The hatchling lurched up onto the stone he'd seen from the nursery. His white whale, now conquered -- as he hauled himself up to its top, he set his pearl down between his front paws and raised his nose to the sky. For the first time in his life, the hatchling watched the sun rise -- and as he felt that light scatter across his shimmering scales and reflect off of his pearl until he was blinded, the young Apollo found his first love.

྿

He was born among the Exultant Order, and under Orchid's guidance, was declared auspicious while his sister and nestmate Canidae was deemed ill-omened -- to be raised with love, and killed in her adulthood, so that the Ones Apart might be appeased. The first dragon who explained what it meant to be ill-omened to the hatchlings was their father, Sundrop. Perhaps, then, it was their father's quiet skepticism and bitter sighs that sowed the seed of doubt within the young Pearlcatcher.

He had questions, and so he sought out his answers. Zeboiim, the Chronicler, was the first one he tried to learn from -- the hatchling devoured the books he was offered, and adored all of the stories, and found his own bitterness for the Exultant Order when he read the records of all those who had come before him. Names and faces were committed to ink and paper, present and ready for anyone to read, and it was at a very young age that the hatchling realized just how deep the river of blood truly ran.

He learned from Nyssa, who foresaw the omens of the Ones Apart and interpreted their whispers in the stars. The hatchling wanted to learn if he could learn to speak to them, to ask them why, to ask what happened to the ones who were Sent -- to ask what would happen, eventually, to Canidae. But the stars, as beautiful as they were, gave him few meaningful answers.

Then there was Ilmet, who taught him about magic and the principles which governed the world, and who did not believe in the Ones Apart or in their holy mission -- and he spoke to her about such things, excessively verbose for his age and still tripping over his own paws, and she told him that she had never found empirical evidence that the Ones Apart were real (but that it was still best to stay quiet about it, because it wasn't like the Exultant Order was hurting anyone).

The hatchling hated her for that.

He learned medicine from Terpsichore, and riddles from Query, and a hundred thousand other things from anybody he could convince to entertain him, even for a moment -- he was a jack of all trades and a master of none, a voracious student who was desperate to know a little bit of everything. And yet, Zephyra decided that he was to be a warrior.

It was Cyclamen, the kind old Guardian who helped raise the hatchlings and comfort those deemed ill-omened, who noticed that something was troubling the hatchling (who was, honestly, not so much of a hatchling anymore as a young adolescent). The hatchling confided in him -- he wanted to leave. He didn't hate the idea of fighting, but he couldn't possibly fight in the name of the Order -- even if he belonged to another clan, he'd still be theirs if they trained him and traded him away. He did not want to slaughter and kill and fight for control over other dragons -- he wanted to learn, and love, and watch the sun rise. He wanted to be free, to live and to love without having to pass over his descendants to be inspected by the all-critical eye of Orchid, and most of all, he wanted to be free.

Cyclamen, who recalled having wanted something better for his own hatchlings (many of whom were once deemed ill-omened in their own right and killed accordingly), began to make arrangements. He cooperated with Zephyra and Gawain, of course, but with his assistance, it was decided that the hatchling would be sent to serve with a clan in the Sunbeam Ruins -- they sat at the far edges of the territory, defending an ancient and abandoned library once utilized by the Lightweaver. Not only was the land far from the Exultant Order's own territory, the Hewn City and the great beast Luminax stood between the new clan and the old; in short, it would be pitifully easy to disappear and no longer be thought of.

It was a second chance for the hatchling. In this new place, he was called Apollo, and he was allowed to learn and do whatever he liked and forge his own destiny -- he was allowed to fall in love with the light and with the Lightweaver, and to fall in love with music, and to fall in love with a Guardian his own age called Yinei, who felt discordant in her body and wished to become a Pearlcatcher.

Thanks to Cyclamen, he was allowed to be whoever he wanted to be.
