Name given by previous clan (Kipraw, #21147), joined Clan Diamond Dust October 2014
Chess on front page! Mar 25, 2021, 17:40
Chess had joined the clan with a wave of x iri/white shim/white under dragons in the early days, when the clan was trying to establish itself. Some of them, however, opted to leave to go to other clans, and most of those remaining still struggled to find a place in the clan's hierarchy. While the clan certainly wasn't disorganized, most of its early days were concentrated on survival and building. Roles overlapped and everyone needed to help gather/hunt/patrol. However, it had been five months since Chess had joined the clan and the group had expanded to the point where some specialization was necessary to avoid overlap and keep everyone busy. There was some discussion about his role would be in the future - the clan leaders suggested he would make an excellent excavator, but he had no interest in that. No... he had a secret desire: to be a chef.
Art by Livestraes
It wasn't that unusual, just no one had thought that an Imperial, of all dragons, would want to be a cook. Some of the ingredients were so small, after all. But really, it made sense to him. After all, he wasn't a picky eater and that would help him when he made dishes for the clan (including those seafood-only dragons and the vegetarians). He even had been practicing on meals designed to feed the seafood/plants only types while having add ons for the dragons that liked a little variety. Keeping track of the stores and fixing meals for a variety of food types wasn't easy for a growing clan, especially with the number of dragons that cycled in and out for the training services their clan offered. Food going bad wasn't an issue - preservation was a specialty of Ice clans and the cool (bitter cold) temperatures helped their stores last far longer than in other areas. Fire, on the other hand, was a bit of a problem and they'd had trouble keeping their lairs from melting around them. Fortunately they finally had found a Fire dragon willing to take a permanent place in their clan (which was, as you could imagine, a difficult task), and she'd started building suitable cooking stations (as well as small crafting/forging areas).
Chess had been experimenting with some new recipes, and word had slowly gotten out among the clan's residents. He often found dragons hanging around him at meal time, hoping for an invitation. They were tired of fish popsicles (sometimes the stores got a little too cold) and hastily assembled meals on their own. Finally, when word reached the clan of the 2015 Mistral Meals Cooking Contest, Chess decided it was time to show off his skills and gain his clan leaders' blessing to be the official chef of Clan Diamond Dust.
Art by TCA
After a grueling week of challenges at 2015 Mistral Jamboree Snack Bar, Chess returned to the clan with some very impressive winnings and reviews from the judges. Sure, not everything went perfectly, but given the challenges of the competition, he was really pleased with his performance overall. Happily, the clan leaders shared his opinion - they had stopped by a few days of the competition to see his dishes and saw how passionate he was about cooking. They gave him their blessing to act as the clan's chef and put him in charge of their food stores.
He shared some of his winnings with the clan (many dragons could be see sporting feathered wings and tail feathers that were dropped off at the clan from his grand prize package), although he did keep a few small trinkets, like his award, in the rare chest he won and placed in his lair. There was also the matter of his new familiar... He was a gift from one of the judges, who wanted to make sure Chess had a reminder of the event that sent him on his career path. The Salve Kamaitachi, sporting the Wind flight's emblem, proved to be a very good helper, often doing clean up while Chess worked on making the meals.
Despite all the excitement surrounding the Mistral Jamboree '15, Chess soon settled into the day to day work of being a chef in the clan. His primary duty was assessing the clan's stores and advising the leaders on what supplies were needed. Most of the clan's permanent dragons still took care of their own daily meals, but Chess often prepared food for the hunters and gatherers that would last during their journeys (dried meat/trail mix/etc) and he cooked meals for the visiting dragons who were there for training. Yara, one of the clan's fluffy tundras, often assisted him with the vegetarian meals and helped tend the small garden so the clan had fresh greens. Chess was also responsible for feasts and other special occasion meals, when the entire clan would gather together to eat. He was thrilled with his new role and took great pride in his meals - the other dragons in the clan were also quite pleased that someone was checking the stores and keeping the pantries filled properly.

2015 Mistral Jamboree: Snack Bar http://www1.flightrising.com/forums/forga/1383043
Sunday's Challenge http://flightrising.com/main.php?p=mb&board=forga&id=1383043&page=3&anchor=9906189#9906189
Bloodstone pulls back the cloth on the basket dramatically before dropping it to the ground. Inside flopped about a still wiggling assortment of things from the deep.
Hmm... eel, shrimp, and fish... Chess knew just the recipe for those ingredients: Catch of the Day - Cioppino. While mussels, fish, and crab were essential ingredients, the recipe was flexible enough to use a variety of species, and he regularly included other types of seafood, depending what had been fished that day.
Entry: Catch of the Day - Cioppino
For those who did not strictly dine on seafood, he chopped up the onion and sea grass, sautéed the onion until it was translucent, and put them in a separate dish with a spoon so dragons could add it to their bowl of stew.
Monday's Challenge http://flightrising.com/main.php?p=mb&board=forga&id=1383043&page=4&anchor=9917773#9917773
"Today's challenge is working with sweet items, since that seems to be a preference of many of my lairmates. Personally I don't see much of an appeal to eat them constantly."
Entry: Sweet & Sour Summer Sorbet
Once the sorbet was set, he began to plate: a scoop of the sorbet with the glazed fruit next to it. As he wiped the edges of the plates to make sure it was a pristine presentation, he saw the judges approaching… and realized that the toasted Honeybees & Crunchy Moth Legs were still sitting on the tray!! He quickly grabbed a handful and topped the glazed fruit with them. Phew! Completed in the nick of time!
Tuesday's Challenge http://flightrising.com/main.php?p=mb&board=forga&id=1383043&page=6
Bloodstone gestures to the group of dragons next to her, out of which a rather smug looking mirror announces with a grin, "It's barbeque time!"
"Though...ah....don't feel compelled to grill if you don't want," Gourmet quickly adds.
Entry: Grilled Meat Platter with Spicy Dipping Sauce
Chess artfully arranged the grilled meat (and the fish) on a platter with bowls of the dipping sauce in the center, layering the Blackwing Croaker and the Heartred Croaker legs around the edge of the plate. Nothing like cooking on an open flame, especially when you weren’t afraid that your lair would melt around you.
Thursday's Challenge http://flightrising.com/main.php?p=mb&board=forga&id=1383043&page=8&anchor=9965940#9965940
"I heard whisperings from someone that cooking was just throwing things in a pot and that anyone could do it," Bloodstone said. "If they came back today, they'll see just how difficult this ART can be, as I've chosen some rather tough to get at ingredients for today. Please do be careful to not choke any of the judges on any lingering poisonous or pointy bits."
Entry: Noodles with Pesto Sauce
Chess was pleased with Yara's dish the previous day, but he was back for this difficult challenge. Once the “noodles” were cooked, he tossed them with the sauce and the chopped dodo leg and tentatively took a bite. With relief, he noted that his tongue wasn’t tingling and his face didn’t feel like it was on fire.
Friday's Challenge http://flightrising.com/main.php?p=mb&board=forga&id=1383043&page=10&anchor=9985308#9985308
"Today's selection comes specifically from our clan's home gardens." Bloodstone grinned slightly. "Kill some pests and have stock for the Jamboree....two birds, one stone."
Entry: Insect Trail Mix
Once all the components were done, he gently tossed them together and placed them in a bowl for the judges. Disaster averted!
Saturday's Challenge
"You didn't think we'd finish out the Jamboree without doing a Wind themed challenge, did you?" Bloodstone asked. She rested back on her hindlegs and clapped her front together. "Alright then....chop chop! This is your last day to impress me if you haven't already so get cooking!"
Entry: Surf and Turf and Air Festival Platter with a Windy Garden Salad and a Berry Shortcake
Wow - Chess stared at all his dishes: the Surf and Turf and Air main course with the side Windy Garden Salad with Seaberry Vinaigrette and (optional) crunchy bug croutons plus the Berry Shortcake dessert. Perhaps he went a little extreme this time - it was enough food for a feast! Ah, well, it had been an exciting week of competition and this was his last chance to impress the judges. No matter the results, however, he had a fantastic time and a truly memorable Mistral Jamboree.

The more I look at it, the more I like it. - When I first saw it, all I could think of was... what. But as I started judging it just looked perfect! How can a dragon actually resemble ham?? It does. The tapir looks like the ham's fibres, the hex looks like the skin outside and even the spines looks like the decorations hams usually have when served. There is nothing out of place here and it just... stands out. IT'S HAM??! I love it.
